- Hey everybody! Lori here with a fun little project to next level your #butterflygarden ! This is an easy project to make and great for your kids to help you with.
How to make a butterfly puddler. All you need is:
1. A shallow dish like a planter base or bird bath (or even just a depression in the ground.
2. Sand or mud.
3. Amendments like composted manure or plain compost with some sea salt or epsom salt
4. Small rocks. You can also add some fruit if you like. Butterflies love rotting fruit!

No but will be making one thank you 😁
Thank you for the clear and concise instructions; I will be making one today.
Great! Have fun and the bees and butterflies thank you! 🦋
I have never seen a watering station for bees and butterflies done like this. I’ve had a mud puddle in my yard for butterflies and am planning a wildlife pond now. I especially like having the puddle elevated so that I can watch it at a distance.
I have found that it will be necessary to provide different water features throughout my yard because some of the insects I want to attract, like dragonflies, butterflies and bees will be come prey to other animals. By having separate places for feeding and breeding, I hope to protect some of them while providing habitat for frogs, toads, turtles, fish and snakes. Now I need to find videos that show me how to do it. 😊
Thank you so much for sharing this with us!
Providing habitat for all of them is a challenge! Of course, it's all part of the circle of life. As much as we want all the pollinators to live, the caterpillars and larvae are so important for their predators to survive as well. It's a tough choice.
The "Sand" looks like kitty litter :) Ty for the great video, looking forward to making this!
@@JJE2010MO it’s coarse sand. If that was kitty litter, it would be a huge clump 😆
I thought it looked like kitty litter also. Thank you for the video.
Beautifully done! Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Excited to try this, very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! It's a very easy project and versatile :)
I learned something today! 😊
I have the same bird bath, and what an excellent idea for my butterfly garden. This I will try, thank you!
You’re welcome 😊
Lovely little project thank you I will make today! ❤🎉
Have fun!
I am inspired!
It's a fun and easy project!
Im going to make a few of these with my kids. ❤

What I did to fix my bird bath I made that wasn’t stable: got some wide PVC, cut the height I wanted it, painted it, and then put bar down inside it for even more stability. I have another that has taller wooden “stakes” inside but my sister was worried the wood would rot. I thought about possibly pouring concrete inside it, but honestly - no time right now since it’s a temp fix lol
Isn't it funny how temporary fixes ending being long-term ones? LOL
It said to refresh every month … do you have to change out the sand? I have a birdbath that I’m going to convert. I have smaller rocks. Can I use pieces of tree limbs for the bees to land on?
I don't change out all the sand as often, but I do rinse it out well and refresh with the compost and salts. You can really be creative and use whatever you like for the landing perches!
Interesante ❤
What kind of organic compost should one use? Ive been looking online but so much many different ones out there, not sure which is safe. Some have fertilizers etc , i don’t think that would be ok?!?!?
I think a manure based compost is best as that gives the butterflies the minerals and nutrients they are looking for. You don't want anything with an added fertilizer.

What the He** kind of sand is that?
It’s coarse sand.
