Pan America S One year/25,000 mile review

- I've been riding this beast for a bit over one year and 25,000 miles, so I decided to sit down and give you my thoughts on my bike.
And all the miles were put on my bike, not loaners.

Great video, I just bought a 2022 Pan America Special 2 days ago and I am beyond excited!!!!
Congratulations! I have a 2021 with 17,000 miles on it. Even with the few minor electrical issues, I still love the bike. It is so much fun to ride.
Many thanks for yout honest words about the Pannie. I have my PAS now for about 1 month with 1700km on it. I love this bike, even with the flaws.
Thank you for this video Sir, ride safe and greetings from Germany!🍻
Thanks, hope to get over there one of these days. I've always wanted to see the the Black Forest and the Hofbräuhaus München.
I love you're enthusiasm, bloody good review by the way..
Great video. I'm at 5k on my PAS. I completely agree. One of the best bikes I have ever owned myself. I too had a F800GSA and it handled like a pig compared to the PAS. The supply chain issues and parts availability from HD is mind numbingly stupid and short sighted. Surely they realized producing an on road off road machine would require a spares inventory. I waited 7 months for bags after mine were damaged by a driver on his cell phone. I'm still waiting (8 months) for the bag mounts. No excuse. HD, get your crap together.
Great honest review. Thanks
Paul Wojnar. Picked up my 2022 PA Special in August. Did 3 consecutive 700 plus mile rides. Went to Fla. And back to Pa. Gave done 12 hours plus stints and two 14 hour stints. All types of terrain and weather. Rural. City and interstate. All with absolutely no issues. I must say after over 50 years of all types of riding on numerous brands and types of motorcycles that this machine is fast becoming my most favorite of then all. Whenever I am on it I have to pinch myself to remind ne that this is a motorcycle built by Harley Davidson. I salute the Motor Company for having the fortitude to venture where they havent gone before. I commend them for producing a machine that is a match for the competition. After 8000 plus miles I really love this bike and I fully intend to put at keast 100,000 miles on it as soon as possible. If it is possible to wear it out I surely will purchase another.
Very accurate review. I have the same color and have only 6800 mile’s living in North Idaho. Back ordered parts, broken heat shield bracket, software updates. Very frustrating ownership, it’s great when it plays nice.
Good information, thanks
Great review! Keep up the good work and riding! Just bought a 22. You helped my decision of acquiring one. I am excited to enter into the Adventure bike category and can't wait to get into the community.
Took one out for a test ride last weekend & I'm picking it up next weekend. This will be my first adventure bike but I'm liking what I hear from you sir & everyone else. Ride safe.
Hell yeah brother!
Great video. Love your complete understanding of owning a first year bike. I’m only 2k in on mine, but love it. I typically ride 29k a year on bike, I’m using PAS more this year than Ultra limited. Hope to make my own 25k review in near future. By the way love the background noise.
Thanks, the background noise was a happy accident - from where I was sitting all I could hear was the buzz of mosquitoes
So far (2,100 miles), my ‘22 is mainly being used as a sport tourer. I live about 50 miles from a major city and make the trip into the heart of the city about 3 times per week. It is nimble, fast and fun. I need to take it off road a little sometime.
That's some serious miles in a year. I bought my PA a year ago tomorrow but because of lock downs and travel restrictions last year (and winter) I only have 3000 miles on it. I have some trips planned this year so should get about 10,000 miles this summer. I love the bike and haven't had any issues so far, the only thing I don't care for all that much is the seat - I find it too soft for any rides longer than an hour. I may try to get a Corbin seat for it. Ride safe out there.
Thank you for posting this video. I am just starting to put miles on my '22 PAS and appreciate your honest review. And . . . 100K in one year? Do it.
I've been thinking about it for a while (literally since I got it), and even have an Excel spreadsheet set up. The average is 274 miles a day, but the maintenance logistics are the hang up - that's a lot of time and money while it's not moving, and a 300 a day average might not be enough. Still...
Have a '21 same color. Love mine , wonky clock and all. That's the only issue, haven't had any updates yet, so maybe it'll fix that. You have to get them to hook their computer back up to it and turn your heated grips on for some reason, that's what has been said on the forums. Safe riding bro.
I ALSO LOVE MY PAN AMERICA.
Your heated grips and usb port can be toggled back ON ; just take it in and have the tech plug it into their computer and turn them back on. I had this problem too, until the techs in the shop knew what to do after a firmware update... its an easy fix dude !
marcus
Harley and BMW need to pull their heads out of their asses and allow Apple Carplay like Honda does.
Amen!!
Right?
Thanks for your review. i have the 2022 PA, i have had a few isues with her with battery drainingm so i updated. Then the rear tail light plug had a bad pin connector. No big deal. I just dropped her off at HD Folsom, because she is making an engine noise clacking when she warms up.. . I thought maybe that it was a misfire at first, so i changed the 4 spark plugs and air filter. But the noise still happened when she warmed up. They should tell me this week what they found. I am looking at my side stand and will probably fabricate a modified stand, it is still the most irritating issue on the bike. But like you, I love the bike, it is like a Jeep on two wheels.
What did they find on the engine noise? My 22 has 2100 miles and sounds like a box of rocks, the dealer I go to says it's normal lol
Did you find out what was wrong.
@@dmac5497 when it's cold or warm?
@@grayghost1423 cold it's noisy, hot it sounds like the timing chain is going to come through the case
@@grayghost1423 They are still doing diagnostics but they think it might be the front cylinder cam chain tensioners. They will know more net week. They also said my Voltage Regulator is bad and ordered a new one.
Thanks for the video!
I wish that you would calm down though.
How many miles are you getting on stock tires?
I've been on the fence about these for 3 years, just so many problems I'm just not sure it outweighs the benefits. I've been on BMW GS ADV bikes for over 20 years and they're tough to beat.
43mpg!? Damn that's as good as my Z900RS!
How did you fix the no start issue I am still having that issue with my 21 pan American special. It also throws a engine code for loss of communication to the ECU whenever it won’t start.
Anthony. I have found that when you flip the ignition lever on wait 20 to 30 seconds to allow the ECM to go thru pre start self diagnostic check. Then start it. Also allow it to warm up to 160 degree coolant temp before riding off this should eliminate the situation you are having. You can go into diagnostic mode to clear codes or go to dealer to have it done and maybe your bike does not have the most recent flash update.
Jim I have less than 1000 miles on my '22 PanAm and if you have time and you've keep up with your temps could share how hit your PanAm runs in stop and go situations on hot days, I'm getting upwards of 235 in south GA so I know in Florida your feeling it. And have you experienced a y issues with radiator hose being so close to header pipe. I almost want to order an extra hose just in case lol thank's
Fortunately my radiator hose was far enough away as built. My bike was among the first built and I think my lack of problems might stem from everybody was going extra slow at first and following the checklist to a T while they were learning.
In normal stop and go it will creep into the 210s and 220s, and one time outside Huntsville, AL during the Iron Butt Rally it got into the 230s in horrendous traffic while making my way to checkpoint 2. On the other hand it (not me) was happy running in the high 190s while cruising through the Death Valley area at an indicated 120'f.
I think (but don't know) one of the software updates removed the air temperature limit of 120'f. It was 120 @ 11am and the gauge didn't go up for the next couple of hours. I've seen an indicated 121 since then.
If you have any less than three eighths inch clearence between hose and exhaust the radiator hose is not fully seated on the radiator spout. Have you dealer check this. Dealers are just now receiving a service bulletin regarding the issue. Its a very simple fix. Can be done in 30 mins by a tech. DO NOT follow the forums that say that you have to cut one quarter inch from the hose end. That is not the issue. When the hose is installed firmly up to the tab on the radiator spout you get that extra quarter inch clearance between hose and exhaust. Go to your dealer.
Are you going to get the unfinished business done in 23? I've got 6600 miles on my 21 PAS and love it!
Guess I should have waited to ask this question!
Yes I got the draw. I'm concentrating on the Hoka Hey next month, then that will be my next focus.
Some of the forums you’d think this is the worst bike ever…you may be the first dude worldwide that gets that 100000 miles
Maybe, but there are riders in the IBA/Hoka Hey community that may beat me (interesting coincidence - they also run PanAm & Road Glide). I'm actually researching the idea of using the miles I put on it during the Hoka Hey (probably 14-15,000 miles including transit back & forth to South Dakota) as the start and trying to make it into IBA's 100k club on a PanAm. Riding isn't the problem, maintenance & money are the issues I need to crack.
I’m thinking about trading my CVO SG in on one. Have you found any off road keep trails to ride? I’m in Orlando too. Have you tried Crooms or Ocala National Forest?
I've been thinking about it, but I'm going to wait until after I finish the Hoka Hey Challenge (don't want to go down off road & damage it again, right before I go out for pretty close to 14,000 miles the next two months).
The trouble with Florida is so much of it is sand, and sand sucks for heavy bikes off road.
Crap, forgot to ask, what has been your favorite tire for the bike so far?
Tough call. Best for the road by far were the Michelin Anakee 3. I got over 10,000 miles out of them (mostly rain mode to save them and the chain). Handled great, and just a touch noisy in the turns after they started to square off. I'll probably run them in next year's IBR. Their only weak point is off pavement, they have zero grip off road and were very sketchy on dirt roads and gravel.
The Scorchers it came with were actually pretty good all around tires, pretty sticky in the curves and decent traction for dirt roads & gravel. They are perfectly suitable as an all-around tire, and if I was using it properly, it would be a pretty good choice. They just don't last long enough for use as a rally tire. Between overheating them running sun up to sun down in 120f with a heavy load across the desert, then throwing them straight across the Rockies I destroyed them in 3-days/3,500 miles. Then again, they were never meant for that kind of abuse.
Right now I've just put on a set of Mitas E-07+ Dakar tires. They are heavy, stiff as all getout, and buzzy on the road. They also have great traction on dirt and gravel roads, and if they actually are made of the same compound as the old E-07 they out to last 10,000 miles. It is a true 50/50 tire, so you lose some of the sport touring performance of the other two tires.
As far as maintenance goes, how much have you spent so far. My main concern is how many miles this thing can take before serious service/maintenance needs to be done. Please and Thankyou!
chain inspection 600 miles, and oil changes, no valve adjustments. pretty minimal.
Why you don't have the TPMS on your display?
It is on a different screen, it will throw a low pressure warning on all screens, but if you want to actually watch the tire pressures go up as they warm up you need to be on the motorcycle diagnostics screen, that's also the screen where you can go in and check and clear codes.
One thing I noticed with the latest update is that you can not go in to check & clear codes while the bike is in motion and more - irritating.
@@floridajim I have a 22 model and I set it as one of the home screen "widgets".
How many miles you got on her now?
Just short of 50k miles I had a rather catastrophic failure of the electrical system, and when they couldn't fix it after almost a month & the start if the Iron Butt Rally quickly approaching I bought a brand new 2023 Special to keep my spot in the IBR and ran 1k in 24 hours to break it in, had the break in service done and it ran great for a week. But buying a new bike turned out to be a huge mistake, and after it left me on the side of the road over half a dozen times I made the painful decision to withdraw from the IBR.

BTW: It's still in the shop.
Sounds like you need to buy two of them so you can cannibalize one for spare parts!
After owning a 21 and now a 22 Pan America I cab tell you the two most important accessories, 1. The warranty 2. A trailer you will be using both frequently! Such a turd these things are! I feel like such a fool falling for owning one of these, I would never ever venture further from home than I'm willing to return home on foot owning one of these piles of steaming hot garbage
What about fucking trouble error cord..?
100k in a year. Phil Mann did it, and then some. You won't be home much. I hope you do it, but....
Yep, the IBA has a list of 20 that have done it, and I was at IBA JAX when Chris Hopper received his award for 100,000 miles in 100 days. Still, not something to be taken lightly. I have pre-paid unlimited regular maintenance (after the rides a few of us have pulled off Harley may re-think that program), but the consumables alone are pretty staggering - 2,500-2,900 gallons of gas, 10 front tires, 15-20 rear tires, 5 chains & sprockets, and that's if all goes well. If I break something that can't get fixed in a few days that could be the end of it, and that would also mean I'd be showing up at the start of the 2023 Iron Butt Rally with 125,000 miles on my PanAm. Add the extra stress on my long-suffering wife and it's something I need to think through.
Still awful tempting.
@@floridajim Phil Mann did it in 6 months as a participant in the BMW MOA mileage contest. The cost in term of fuel and tires is staggering. Like they say, you gotta want to do it.
This is a cross between watching paint dry and a sloth run a race.
Wow
Just purchased a 2023 new from Peterson's Miami. I'm with the pathological liars society and must say that I've had nothing but problems with this dang bike since I rode off the lot. Yeah, that's the ticket. Everything that could possibly go wrong with this dang bike, has. Yeah. What a hunk of junk.
I traded my 2021 for a 2023, and it cost me my spot in the 2023 IBR: ua-cam.com/video/7YBlqHK77lo/v-deo.html
I've gone from the best bike I've ever owned since I started riding in the late 70s to the worst.
