with an 80 millisecond latency that's not so difficult, hey i could almost make a cup of tea in that time

Did you ever try ATC SCM45 Pro? Put a demo pair next to your Kii's. If you're still happy with them, keep them :-) But something tells me you're about to become really unhappy after the test...

Compared them to ATC - no comparison. The Kii were much better.... Everyone has their taste in sound. I wouldn't say they are the best system in the world, but they aren't far off. For the money I think they definitely are. You might be able to beat them if: a) you have a room that is acoustically near perfect and allows you freedom to set your traditional speakers away from walls; b)you spend at least 3 times (probably more like4-5 times) what they cost. And even then you wouldn't have a better cleaner low end.
What they wouldn't be good for is a large room. They just aren't big enough. Kii will need to build a floorstander for that.

Danny Hoffman well everything is relative. I found the Kii narrow sounding, as if all elements were packed in a small box whereas the ATC sounded a lot more open, wide and warm. Also, the bass of Kii was nothing near 20Hz. Sounded more like a small Radio compared to scm45 pro. Taste differ. whatever makes us happy...

Nonsense. I directly A/B compared the SCM45 Pro's - side by side. I agree with everything Danny Hoffman says.
Keep telling yourself that though if it makes you feel better about your ATC's. Good day.

I A/Bd both as well next to each other. I stick to my comment: the Kii sounded like a very good small radio whereas the ATC opened up everything. Wider stereo image, better mids; To me the Kii was no match. Tracks we tested were 'Never an absolution' from the Titanic sound track. The ATC's blew the Kii's literally out of this planet. Next we moved to 'Remember This' by Markus Schulz. Here, the reverb and delays were a LOT more audible on the ATC's. Next I played The Hum by Vegas and Mike. The ATC's revealed certain mix errors instantly. Stereo image was always wider and mids just sounded a lot more natural. For me the Kii's are not even in the same league as the ATC's.
If you loved your Kii's more, I am happy for you man. Whatever goes. Just don't come here making your opinion that of everyone else. I respect your opinion, please respect mine. In the end, there is nothing like the best speaker. The best speaker is subjective and very relative. I did not like the Kii's. I never said they were bad. My brains and ears are most likely working different than yours. None of us is 'right'. We're just dudes who like different flavors of sound. Perhaps you like blondes and I brunettes. Same thing. Is one of us more right than the other then?
One last thing I just read here below by sonicstate: Kii use standard drivers i.e. components made by others. ATC build everything themselves. They design their own bass, mid and high's and have been doing so for decades. As a result, they match everything perfectly: bass with mid with highs with crossover and amps. You will understand that standard components make this a lot more difficult as you have to work with what te manufacturer had in mind, and then you can of course start using all kinds of DSP tricks to make the driver increase/decrease certain frequencies etc. But the more processing you apply the less natural sound becomes. And I am very sensitive for such. ATC try to build every component from the ground up in such a way that as little filtering and processing as possible is needed afterwards. The result is a very smooth wide and natural sounding speaker. You unpack it and you play. No need for tweaking or whatever. It just sounds perfect. The Kii does not. Sorry.

Bruno is NOT the inventor of the class-D amplifier, which was suggested long before Bruno was even considered... Bruno took class-d to the next level with the Hypex ncore and later with Purifi.

listened to these monitors next to a pair of barefoot mm27, amphions, ATC, Newman kh310, genelecs 8040. kii three sounds INSANELY flat, like more flat and uninteresting then anything i've heard. no fatigue, and i imagine making music on these to be extremely comfortable and easy. distinguishing tiny details in specific frequencies in a packed mix is easier than on any pair of speakers i've heard. BUT, they sound so uninteresting and dull, that I think all of my headphones sound more impressive. I can't t imagine myself listening to these in my spare time so i can enjoy music. they just don't sound pleasing/exciting. ultra dull but ultra helpful and unfatiguing. in that way they are quite different from any classic monitor so i ended up not choosing them, as it would be hard for me to get used to them or to switch to a different pair once i used them for a month. barefoots were too boomy, genelecs were just not on par with anything in that price range, atc's were the best, but the kh310's were sooo close to atc's that i picked them up right away at a price they came. oh yeah, and amphions sounded like a damn $50k stereo, also very different from everything, and most impressive, and they make everything super stereo wide, as if there was a 0.10 sec delay between channels. weird. so, here you go guys.

I was wondering too, found €10000 for a pair mentioned. Of course the local dealer I checked was something like geocities from 1997, loaded a sound on page load and didn't have any prices so was useless :D

I would imagine not, given the cost, but they did mention that the drivers are all standard (off the shelf - though presumably expensive) meaning parts would be available.

Transparency, finesse and subtlety... qualities that are hard to measure but easier to hear. These are qualities of speakers that possess lifelike realism and which distinguish the very best from the very good. In one British review I read these qualities are somewhat lacking in the Kiis compared to the best. A good electrostatic has these qualities even if they're not as extended or don't go as loud. Be careful when pronouncing anything as best in the world because more often than not they're not even close.

    • @hidjedewitje
      @hidjedewitje 7 років тому +1

Transparency is actually very easy to measure. It's just expensive. A loudspeaker is a product that reproduces a recording. All you need to measure is how it differs from the original recording.
Everything that is different is considered distortion. Obviously an ideal loudspeaker does not distort, but in reality that is impossible.
How would you define finesse and subtlety?

socksumi Electrostatic speakers perform very poor in neutrality as the physical damping of the foil is impossible: Stereophile reviewed the latest quads ::: The ESL-2912 has an obvious inherent advantage over box speakers in having no box at all. However, with some music, mostly orchestral, I was at times aware of a kind of drumming sound that wasn't part of the music. I assumed that this was a characteristic of the stretched polyolefin dustcovers. You'll recall that removing their dustcovers is one of the ways Quad ESLs have been modified to improve their sound-but this is an extreme step, and unless your listening room is 100% dust free, it will lead to the speaker being damaged in fairly short order. Not recommended!
I think that the resonant colorations that are the source of "speaker sound" are just something that audiophiles and music lovers have to live with, as we concentrate on the music, not the sound. The surprising thing is not that a loudspeaker contributes to the music sounds of its own that are not characteristics of the recording, but that an electromechanical device can manage to sound as much like musical instruments and human voices as it does while adding so little sound of its own.

What about Stax sr-009 and other Stax headphones? I did notice that in a square wave test for the sr-009 there was a large overshoot. As if the foil goes too far from the momentum of trying to create a square wave and then quickly backs up to where it was supposed to be for the square wave amplitude.

"Best in the world" - is just a strong overstatement ... They sound ok, but a bit artificial, "digital", with slightly glassy highs and not really very natural (i.e. not bringing a faithful sound of recorded instruments). A kind of slightly better Genelecs ... There are much better sounding monitors around ....

My thoughts exactly. 20Hz? No way. I found them not revealing. When compared to the ATC SCM45 Pro for example, the ATC felt like the sound was opening up. The mid detail and stereo width of the ATC is the absolute best I have ever heard and a LOT better than Kii. On top of this, the more DSP processing, the more delay needed to compensate for front/side speakers, the more unnatural your stuff starts to sound. If people love their Kii I'm happy for them but for me there was another choice: ATC.

  • @asthecrowflies1201

I wish these people would stop telling people that don't know any better that there isn't anything below 20Hz in most music. That is wrong.
