  • The Boat That Rocked (2009) SYNOPSIS: In 1966, BBC radio broadcasts less than an hour of pop music a day, forcing pirate DJs to take up the slack from boats anchored outside British waters. Quentin (Bill Nighy) is the commander of such a pirate station, overseeing a host of seedy, lusty and dope-smoking DJs, including the Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Dave (Nick Frost), who makes it his personal mission to see to it that Quentin's newly arrived godson (Tom Sturridge) loses his virginity.

According to IMDB, "the scene in which Young Carl sulks about Marianne was originally supposed to be about eight seconds long and contain nothing but Tom Sturridge sitting on a bench and looking sad. Will Adamsdale and Ike Hamilton happened to be there, so Writer and Director Richard Curtis told them to have a go at what they would have done if their friend was in the same situation. He put on 'So Long, Marianne' and they came up with everything that remains in the scene."

I have tears in my eyes every time I see this scene.
It's so nice of them not to ask stupid question and not to patronise him. They respect his feelings. They just stay by his side.

The perfect formula for a cult movie. Hardly anybody went to see this in the theater. Now most theaters are shut down and everyone, at home, is watching this because it speaks to multiple generations in the same breath. This is a fantastic movie and will be remembered when others are forgotten.

One of the loveliest and most poignant moments in film history. Tea and Biscuits make everything better!
Harold brought so much to that film and he only had one or two lines throughout the whole thing, but he brought so much emotional depth to all his scenes, none more so than this one!

This scene reminds me of my Grandma bringing me a snack or some tea/Cocoa she did it even into my twenties. Didn't even have to ask for it I could just be coming in from cleaning up the yard and sitting down to do something on my computer and all the sudden she'd appear with a cup of tea and some crackers or some thing that she picked up at the store for me to try

It's not the case. The character here is a young, romantic guy, about 18 years old, with no previous relationship experience, who has just had his heart broken for the first time. It's understandable that he's in a bad mood ar the moment. 😉
