No matter how many books or videos you watch, your little one is going to be different than others. Welcome back to YT!! I just wanted to come back to this video and tell you how much it helped me with my first baby. We were struggling with baby throwing up soon after every feed. Our doctors said to keep him upright, help him burp. But still he was constantly throwing up all that breastmilk! It was so heartbreaking. Finally a friend sent me your video. GAME CHANGER. it seemed so obvious after that it wasn’t a good thing that our baby was gulping down milk every feed. Thank you so much! I think knowing what your individual flow is like is important in this. I have an extremely fast flow, and my first wouldn’t take a bottle at all until I figured out he needed a medium to fast flow nipple. I literally choke my babies because my flow is soooo fast, even when not engorged. Thankfully I figured it out with my second and he took a bottle just fine.
Elisha McIntyre that’s a good point! I haven’t given my baby a bottle yet but I’ll keep this idea in mind if she has problems, I have a super fast flow also

More people need to know how to pace! NICU RN here and we have to do so much education on feeding preemies with pacing and therapeutic techniques. And even the full term, strong feeders do so much better with pacing. Most parents I work with have no clue before teaching.

I have a DESPERATE video request: Can you please do one about keeping a balance between natural birthing and necessary medical interventions? I am interested in trying to have an unmedicated, natural labor, but the resources that I found for that have been in general very against all interventions it seems like. Whereas other things I have read seem to be on the opposite side of the spectrum saying that there are no circumstances where an intervention recommended by your doctor might actually be unnecessary. I for sure want to keep me and baby safe during the whole experience, but if I can avoid pitocin, forceps, vacuum extraction, episiotomy, c-section, etc, I definitely want that too. I just am worried about being pressured into something for the doctor's convenience that I don't actually need for me and my baby's safety. TIA!
Not sure if you were pregnant when you posted this comment but just in case, I recommend just standing your ground and having your partner be your advocate. They tried to push Pitocin on me during my labor because the doctor himself didn’t feel like waiting but my body was naturally progressing and dilating so I just kept refusing. After 21 hours of labor, including 3 hours of pushing, I safely delivered my healthy baby. It’s YOUR birth experience and as long as the baby is safe in the womb while you labor, then the doctors and medical staff can wait. They’re getting paid to be there as well so don’t let them make you feel bad. If there’s no real medical/safety reason for medical intervention, then just stand your ground and/or have your partner who is with you communicate your wishes too. Best of luck Momma! I hope you and all the Moms have the birth experience of their dreams, and deliver a safe & healthy baby. 💕
We met with a feeding specialist yesterday who showed us how to pace bottle feed since our 2 week old is having latch/reflux issues. I'm going to try the positioning you showed and see if that helps!

Because of a nerve autoimmune disorder I have that very easily spreads and causes severe chronic pain I may not be able to breast feed. There aren't many videos about bottle feeding and it's great to have the info incase I'm unable to breast feed our little one for any reason. I used to work in the infant room at a daycare and WOW is this different than the way we fed the babies! Paced bottle feeding makes so much sense, but I can't imagine taking this much time with each baby at each feeding. Unfortunately, there would just be no way.
I have 2 children that had some feeding difficulties and had to see a speech therapist and she instructed me to feed them just like you showed, sitting up not reclining and the bottle horizontal and not just dumping it into their mouths bc they would choke on the milk bc it came out to quickly and it took them a while to coordinate suck, swallow, breathe. She didn't call it paced bottle feeding so I didn't know that's what it was. But as I watched your video I was like oh I've done that before. Lol
I had no idea about this! I'm due in February and plan on breastfeeding for the first couple of months, but then he will be going to daycare so I'm going to pump and use a bottle at home as well to help him transition some (and to also give mama a break!)

I had issues with my previous too and tried to pump exclusively when I went back to work because they wouldn’t go back and forth but only pumping my supply dried up within a month. I am super nervous going back to work after I have this baby 😖
I love your videos! Your comment “not all babies have read the text book and know the averages”, I just fell off my bed laughing. My first baby went through a faze for a week when he was about two months old where he wanted about 220ml of BM for a few days almost every feed (pace feed on on a slow flow newborn teat). The LC I spoke to over the phone went absolutely crazy at me, telling me I was abusing my son, over feeding him and that my son was over weight without ever seeing him or his growth chart at all. If she had, she would have seen it was very unusual of him to want so much milk, he grew very evenly across all of his growth charts that week/ two week period and it settled right back down to normal after about four days. instead of supporting my need to EE for my personal medical reasons (or finding these out) she just told me off and accused me of being selfish and abusive for refusing to direct feed and over feeding my son. Needless to say, we never attended a physical appointment with her and went to see a nurse who specialised in breastfeeding who helped our journey last for a full year!
Yes! As a mama to a 5 week old recovering from tongue, lip, and double buckle tie surgery. We’ve had a rough journey. I felt like I failed because the breast wasn’t working for us. I was in so much pain and he was feeding for long periods constantly. Then I started pumping, which has been rough. We started trying to breastfeed again two weeks after his surgery and it still wasn’t working for us. His suck is still dysfunctional and his tongue and upper lip still aren’t doing what they need to do for successful breastfeeding. I would still love to get back to the breast, but have come to terms with the fact that it may never happen for us. Now I am mentally feeling better. When you mentioned the baby not knowing when he was full. It struck a chord. I had been feeling like the post feeding fussiness and hunger cues were because my baby was so used to breastfeeding for two hours at a time before the tie surgery.

In my experience a hungry baby/kid will eat whatever is offered. I know it is painful but don't give in at the first sign of resistance. Maybe let the kid skip a meal if it wouldn't take the bottle and then try offering the bottle again for the next meal. If you always give in the kid learns that it will eventually get what it wants by resisting you long enough. BUT: please check first if there are some other (maybe physical) issues. You can always consult a doctor if you are not certain. Or maybe there is an issue with positioning, with the bottle itself or your feeding technique that is making it hard for the infant to get the milk out - or it comes out to fast (but this video should be a good indicator if there is something you could change or try). And sometimes a very young child is just not ready to give up the breast and the comfort that comes with it. Always question yourself why you want it to take a bottle. Of course it is your choice not to breastfeed (anymore) and sometimes you can't change the need for bottlefeeding, but if you have a choice and you are ok with brestfeeding a bit longer maybe just give your child and yourself a bit more time. Maybe the issue will dissolve itself. However here are some tips you can try: offer different brands and types of bottles/nipples. Maybe your kid just don't like the form of it. If you try to feed formula maybe switch to a different brand - it might just not like the taste of it. Check if the bottle is too hot or too cold. Let the child explore the empty bottle so it can get used to it. Show your child how you drink out of the bottle and show that you are enjoying it. Take time and try to provide a calm environment with no/little interference. Since you wrote "it never happened" I suppose your kid is now too old for a bottle but please let me know if you have tried some of this. I am curios ;) I hope my comment is intelligible (I am not a native speaker) and maybe it can even help someone :)
Amelia Toscano we’ve also tried pretty much all they say. We’ve talked to a lot of moms, lactation consultants and our doc. Some babies just never take a bottle. But I’m also curious if she has any suggestions we haven’t tried since she’s pretty knowledgeable! My only reason would be it would be nice to have a break occasionally or feel like I can leave for more than a couple hrs if that! Luckily my babe is a great and efficient breastfeeder so I’m grateful for that.
I love your videos! super informative! I'm a new mom and this helped a lot but now I'm a bit scared of how to approach daycares with this method. I wonder if they already know what to do or not. I will more than likely find out once I get to that point but I'm the type to prepare just in case. I hate the idea of dropping off my baby with people I can't fully and completely trust to do what I would do, if that make sense? If possible, you should do a video over this topic to hopefully ease the minds of new moms who are scared of putting trust into a daycare with these techniques and how to approach to topic with the day care.
A lot of mixed information out there. I like to wind my baby around every oz, as if he drinks more in one go he sometimes sicks it up. However a leaflet from the health visitor says don’t stop the baby feeding unless they stop themselves. Thank you for making me feel I’m doing things the right way

Omg please do a video on getting a baby to take a bottle. My baby is 10 weeks and is EBF. She absolutely refuses the bottle and pacis. We’ve tried the list of 20 things our lactation consultants through our insurance say. She refuses!
Just as a PSA for other parents out there, the ideal time to introduce a a bottle to an exclusively breastfed baby is between 4-6 weeks old , once Breastfeeding is well established and before their suck reflex diminishes. For a new lactation specific video each week, stop by my channel :)

So I have a couple of questions. I've heard you say in a couple videos that you are exclusively pumping. I'd love to know the story there, as so am I, but not by choice. I'd rather breastfeed. My baby girl had oral ties that did not get identified or corrected until about 7 weeks of age. And trying to teach an infant that never took the breast to do so now is proving very difficult for me. So my questions are: are you planning to go back to breast and if so how? And: from the standpoint of baby neurologic development, might there be an age at which they are more receptive to learning a new feeding skill, i.e. feeding from the breast?
So I am currently uploading a video on exclusive pumping, and I've also filmed my exclusive pumping story. My son is now 14 months old, so I am no longer pumping or breastfeeding him. I go into more detail in my video, but like you it was due to necessity and not choice. You are a strong mama doing all you can for your baby.
Is this something that would also be beneficial or necessary for exclusively bottle/formula fed babies? Or is this more for babies who are accustomed to breastfeeding?
I take 5 medications for my OCD, Panic Didorder, ADHD and GAD. My SSRI was the only medicine that I was told to stop. My youngest is now 10 and I didn't have any problems with my 3 kids. There are psychiatrist that specifically work with pregnant women. This was a life saver for me and can't recommend finding one or asking for a referral.
Do you have suggestions to increase fatness of breast milk found out i have to feed with both formula and breast milk because not being fatty enough to maintain weight
I had to give my daughter formula at 3 days old because she had severe jaundice and my milk didn’t come in until 3 weeks after she was born. She will only latch a 3rd of the time. Is it too late to try this? She’s a terrible eater even with a bottle.
Definitely not too late to try this. I’d also recommend meeting with an IBCLC to figure out a feeding plan and work on getting baby on the breast (if that is your goal)!

Can you do a video on trying to get milk production back up after it starts to dry up. I messed up with not pumping enough and it started to go away and now i pump every 2 hours and take supplements and I get an oz at the most, It's so frustrating!
I’ve got a video on naturally increasing your milk supply and I’m working on one on exclusive pumping. I also have a video on fenugreek which is a pretty common supplement that can actually decrease a mama’s supply. But power pumping can be super helpful and keeping up the every 2 hour pumping. It’s all supply and demand! Are you pumping in addition to putting baby to breast. If so, 1 ounces is a perfectly normal amount to get.
He's bottle fed because he can't latch, he has a high pallet. And when he was a week old they told me I had to supplement with formula because he lost 9% of his birth weight. he's also almost 2 months old but my supplements have fenugreek in them and I do power pumping.
I dont know how much this may help but drinking extra amounts of water than you would normally drink helps it I naturally drink plenty of water and while I breastfed it seemed the more I drank the more milk I had, hope this helps
That didn’t exist with the newborn I fed (when I babysat) baby‘a sucking reflex was so strong, sucked the bottle right into their face and ate SOOOO fast. hungry baby, which is fine since they were tiny

By going away and then have someone else give them the bottle when they're hungry. Most babies don't take bottles from mom because they don't know the concept and have no desire to try this plastic boob imitation when they feel and smell the real thing. Maybe after a while when they got used to it they will also take the bottle from mom :)
I been doing how u say, still my three weeks seems try sucking so fast.. and then chocking ! Felt so bad. Seems like its too much for hr to swallow. Where as my bottle is size one
Sadly I gave my son that size 1 nipple , he has a dx floppy air way , spent the night in Nicu and now he is on premie and still at 3 weeks. Ugh . Doing much better due to nipple flow .

She's not "Making this up" this is a widely used technique. My babies survived without paced feeding. But that doesn't mean I can't do better with more information.
Nothing against you or your lisp at all i just noticed that most people with a lisp all look the same in the mouth when they talk. Your mouth when speaking looks exactly like drew barrymore.

Yes! As a mama to a 5 week old recovering from tongue, lip, and double buckle tie surgery. We’ve had a rough journey. I felt like I failed because the breast wasn’t working for us. I was in so much pain and he was feeding for long periods constantly. Then I started pumping, which has been rough. We started trying to breastfeed again two weeks after his surgery and it still wasn’t working for us. His suck is still dysfunctional and his tongue and upper lip still aren’t doing what they need to do for successful breastfeeding. I would still love to get back to the breast, but have come to terms with the fact that it may never happen for us. Now I am mentally feeling better.
When you mentioned the baby not knowing when he was full. It struck a chord. I had been feeling like the post feeding fussiness and hunger cues were because my baby was so used to breastfeeding for two hours at a time before the tie surgery.
Thanks for your tips. I'm still watching all your videos, so maybe you already posted it, but I would appreaciate some extra info for those women that can't breastfeed (as me). It's quite difficult to find detailed tutorials about that subject. Thanks again!!!

In my experience a hungry baby/kid will eat whatever is offered. I know it is painful but don't give in at the first sign of resistance. Maybe let the kid skip a meal if it wouldn't take the bottle and then try offering the bottle again for the next meal. If you always give in the kid learns that it will eventually get what it wants by resisting you long enough.
BUT: please check first if there are some other (maybe physical) issues. You can always consult a doctor if you are not certain. Or maybe there is an issue with positioning, with the bottle itself or your feeding technique that is making it hard for the infant to get the milk out - or it comes out to fast (but this video should be a good indicator if there is something you could change or try).
And sometimes a very young child is just not ready to give up the breast and the comfort that comes with it. Always question yourself why you want it to take a bottle. Of course it is your choice not to breastfeed (anymore) and sometimes you can't change the need for bottlefeeding, but if you have a choice and you are ok with brestfeeding a bit longer maybe just give your child and yourself a bit more time. Maybe the issue will dissolve itself.
However here are some tips you can try: offer different brands and types of bottles/nipples. Maybe your kid just don't like the form of it. If you try to feed formula maybe switch to a different brand - it might just not like the taste of it. Check if the bottle is too hot or too cold. Let the child explore the empty bottle so it can get used to it. Show your child how you drink out of the bottle and show that you are enjoying it. Take time and try to provide a calm environment with no/little interference.
Since you wrote "it never happened" I suppose your kid is now too old for a bottle but please let me know if you have tried some of this. I am curios ;)

Amelia Toscano we’ve also tried pretty much all they say. We’ve talked to a lot of moms, lactation consultants and our doc. Some babies just never take a bottle. But I’m also curious if she has any suggestions we haven’t tried since she’s pretty knowledgeable! My only reason would be it would be nice to have a break occasionally or feel like I can leave for more than a couple hrs if that! Luckily my babe is a great and efficient breastfeeder so I’m grateful for that.

When my 2 month old is rejecting the bottle sometimes I give him the pacifier and after a few minutes offer him the bottle again. Works everytime

I'm a new mom and this helped a lot but now I'm a bit scared of how to approach daycares with this method. I wonder if they already know what to do or not.
I will more than likely find out once I get to that point but I'm the type to prepare just in case.

I like to wind my baby around every oz, as if he drinks more in one go he sometimes sicks it up.
However a leaflet from the health visitor says don’t stop the baby feeding unless they stop themselves.

Omg please do a video on getting a baby to take a bottle. My baby is 10 weeks and is EBF. She absolutely refuses the bottle and pacis. We’ve tried the list of 20 things our lactation consultants through our insurance say. She refuses!
Just as a PSA for other parents out there, the ideal time to introduce a a bottle to an exclusively breastfed baby is between 4-6 weeks old , once Breastfeeding is well established and before their suck reflex diminishes. For a new lactation specific video each week, stop by my channel :)

So I have a couple of questions. I've heard you say in a couple videos that you are exclusively pumping. I'd love to know the story there, as so am I, but not by choice. I'd rather breastfeed. My baby girl had oral ties that did not get identified or corrected until about 7 weeks of age. And trying to teach an infant that never took the breast to do so now is proving very difficult for me. So my questions are: are you planning to go back to breast and if so how? And: from the standpoint of baby neurologic development, might there be an age at which they are more receptive to learning a new feeding skill, i.e. feeding from the breast?
So I am currently uploading a video on exclusive pumping, and I've also filmed my exclusive pumping story. My son is now 14 months old, so I am no longer pumping or breastfeeding him. I go into more detail in my video, but like you it was due to necessity and not choice. You are a strong mama doing all you can for your baby.

I take 5 medications for my OCD, Panic Didorder, ADHD and GAD. My SSRI was the only medicine that I was told to stop.
My youngest is now 10 and I didn't have any problems with my 3 kids.
There are psychiatrist that specifically work with pregnant women.
This was a life saver for me and can't recommend finding one or asking for a referral.

I had to give my daughter formula at 3 days old because she had severe jaundice and my milk didn’t come in until 3 weeks after she was born. She will only latch a 3rd of the time. Is it too late to try this? She’s a terrible eater even with a bottle.

Definitely not too late to try this. I’d also recommend meeting with an IBCLC to figure out a feeding plan and work on getting baby on the breast (if that is your goal)!

Can you do a video on trying to get milk production back up after it starts to dry up. I messed up with not pumping enough and it started to go away and now i pump every 2 hours and take supplements and I get an oz at the most, It's so frustrating!
I’ve got a video on naturally increasing your milk supply and I’m working on one on exclusive pumping. I also have a video on fenugreek which is a pretty common supplement that can actually decrease a mama’s supply. But power pumping can be super helpful and keeping up the every 2 hour pumping. It’s all supply and demand! Are you pumping in addition to putting baby to breast. If so, 1 ounces is a perfectly normal amount to get.
He's bottle fed because he can't latch, he has a high pallet. And when he was a week old they told me I had to supplement with formula because he lost 9% of his birth weight. he's also almost 2 months old but my supplements have fenugreek in them and I do power pumping.
I dont know how much this may help but drinking extra amounts of water than you would normally drink helps it I naturally drink plenty of water and while I breastfed it seemed the more I drank the more milk I had, hope this helps

By going away and then have someone else give them the bottle when they're hungry. Most babies don't take bottles from mom because they don't know the concept and have no desire to try this plastic boob imitation when they feel and smell the real thing. Maybe after a while when they got used to it they will also take the bottle from mom :)

Sadly I gave my son that size 1 nipple , he has a dx floppy air way , spent the night in Nicu and now he is on premie and still at 3 weeks. Ugh . Doing much better due to nipple flow .
