Excellent expository Skip! With regards to Solomon's age, Scripture strongly implies he was 18 or 19 when he became king. You can calculate this age by looking at the successive royal geneologies, and the count backwards. Also, God promised to give him wisdom and riches, but NOT a long life. (God knew Solomon would stray from the faith as he grew older.) He ruled for 40 years, and died at 59 or 60.
Thanks Pastor Skip. David certainly had "stones" and it was God who gave them to him. About obituaries, the "successful" person by the world's standards typically list their academic career and their job resume. They may have attended an ivy league university and been an accomplished brain surgeon or government leader - perhaps a member of Congress or even the President of the United States. So the obituary will fill almost an entire page of the newspaper and biographies may be written. And yet that person may have ignored God and rejected Christ their entire life and influenced and poisoned people against the Word of God. For example, teaching evolutionary theory that humans originated from primordial slime or implementing government policies that facilitate the murder of unborn human beings. So while they may have led a "successful" life in the world's eyes and have a lengthy obituary of their "wonderful" accomplishments, it was a foolish and wasted life in God's eyes. The whole work of God in reconciling us to Him through Christ is to transform rebels into worshipers. If we fail to become worshipers of God in this life, then we won't be worshipers of Him in the next life and I believe this earthly life is wasted - regardless of what the obituary says.
