What is in our stand today - post service Norco MTB - stuck thru axle?

    I retired form USAF, aircraft maintenance C-130's. I was taught and understand the importance of going above and beyond the area of repair and maintenance. Good to know we both come from the same school. I do all my own work on my fleet of bikes. People ask me how I keep them so clean and running well. I say its attention to detail. I myself am a lover of the bikes of the early to mid 2000 with rim brakes. I have become a collector of great titanium rigs, just something about them that appeals to me. I do have a modern carbon with disc brakes but have found it not to be my go-to bike. Keep up the good works your brother in arms Orv.

    Those pinch bolts are meant to be, and need to be loosened to remove the axel then re torqued evenly. It will seem siezed unless you do this DAMHIKT. Its totally fine to hang bikes by a hook, and its how we store both service bikes and new bikes that can sit in inventory for a while at work. Not unheard of for brakes to have air in lines after sitting in storage, and I might bleed the front too as a precaution even it it feels ok, since problems can show up when the fluid gets hot, causing air to expand and the brakes to fade out. Mineral oil brakes can run for years without sevice. Its common to bleed dot brakes yearly.

      Thank you! And in fact I have to tone it down because so many times customers don't want to take it to the nth degree. Often there are things I suggest to replace and the customer has a budget in mind that they don't want to go over. Thanks for watching

    Those basic KS droppers usually aren’t serviceable but the real way to fix it is to take it out, take the air cartridge out of the bottom and replace it with a new one (if you can get one) They’re just like the gas strut that holds up the trunk of your car, they wear out over time.
    Sticking a zip tie into the seal can help get some lube down in there, or a thinner lube like park tool synthetic but it may not fix the problem

    A little applied heat from a heat gun should help any stubborn axle. I almost copper paste most metal on metal parts. Keep’s corrosion at bay. 👍🏻

    Sometimes the dropper post can start working again just by holding the lever while putting weight on the saddle. Forearm is usually fine let it bottom out then release the lever. Then hold the saddle and pull up while holding the lever down once again. If you repeat about 10-20 times in quick succession sometimes that can bring them back to life. This type of thing seems to happen when people don't ride their mtb for an extended period of time. Good luck!

    Yeah I loosen the pinch bolts pre removal. had the same issue on a fox 40 and then of course the head rounds off since it's aluminum so be careful. Some of these forks have a seperate nut on the pinch bolts. so don't go all the way out or be prepared for them to drop out.

    The pinch bolts on those fox forks usually need to be backed off a bit to remove the thru axle

    as the other commenters pointed out, the pinch bolts block the axle from unscrewing. You need to loosen the pinch bolts before loosening the axle

    SRAM drivetrains are VERY sensitive to B gap. Especially 12s, with 52t cassettes. Its important to set with the plastic gauge, or they will never shift right. You can't eyeball like with Shimano. The shifting can also seem underwhelming on the stand but under load pedaling will work great. With large cassettes the hangar alignment also needs to be within a couple MM, and MTB's get thrashed, so I alwayse assume its bent.

      Thank you! I have the gauge. This was a 10 speed drivetrain. Also I didn't see any damage on the RD so I figured I was good to go with a cable and housing.
