I was 3 years old when I was first taken to the RHDR I am now 86 My last vidit was in 1990 Ihave never lost my love and interest in this fantastic railway thank you akll who keep it running
Fond memories of the 1960's when we went to a Maddisons Holiday Camp called Golden Sands at Dymchurch and the camp had its own halt. Each year we went we always had a trip on the train.Fifty+ years later I still have vivid recollections of those halcyon days.
Rode this in 1954 when I was 10 years old on school holiday. Surprised to see that it is still running. It looks to be in better condition today than it was then. Great memory, thanks for posting.
I have never been because I live a long way away but my dream is to one day spend a day (or two!) riding this awesome railway and seeing what every nook and cranny has to offer!
Crikey, this takes me back to around 68? I went somewhere near this track with the cub scouts! We stayed in long field / Nisin huts? Single storey, open plan dormitory’s which could have been an old war military camp? We went on the R.H & D railway at some point, and the memory has stayed with me. Plus the shingle beach?? Fantastic :)
It's worth bearing in mind that this railway is 1/3rd of full scale, running on 15" gauge track. Every bump, jolt, and dip that the camera picks up gets vastly exacerbated by the heavy use of magnification over distance compared to the size of the locomotives. It's no secret that the tracks aren't 100% straight and true. However, the camera makes it look much worse than it actually is.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel Even so, some investment in that track is badly needed. When viewed at distance the kinks and bumps shouldn't be that visible.
A glorious, eccentric and utterly magnificent little railway. I have happy memories of riding it across the shingle headland of Dungeness and watching the trains pulling out of what was then called Jefferstone Lane, now St Mary's Bay station.
Thanks so much for your excellent footage, always very enjoyable to watch! It has been many years since I last was able to visit the Romney....the trackwork has not improved!! It is still a truly wonderful and superb railway!
I'm not a train spotter but it was always a dream of mine to go on a steam train. I used to sometimes deliver to the Dungeness nuclear power station and saw some brown (tourist) roadsigns saying RH&DR and after a quick search I found out about this wonderful railway. Dungeness was an unusual starting point, what with those large grey monoliths as a backdrop but it was a truly amazing day out. Thanks for the video and thanks to all the volunteers who make it happen!
Lovely railway splended looking powerful locomotives? But tracking look a bit iffy in places for the speed they are going the way those magnificent locos are bouncing around ? Outcome? A derailment awaiting to happen ? Don't let it slow down in the worst places T.S.R needed along the lines route until the tracks are updated to support these powerful locomotives speeds ? Not wishing to be a killjoy love the railway 🚂 just a comment.
Used to go here as a kid, fond memories. Used to get off the place that had the model railway, Romney i think it was? before going back to Dymchurch and in the loop.
Wow! So cool!!! I want ride on it some day, love it! Too bad USA doesn't have an everyday., miniature rail system, using steam locomotive, that's incredible!
Dungeness. Used to night fish there in the 80s. Sometimes saw tracer bullets flying at the nearby training range. There is still the remnants of the former Southern train station there.
I really love this sort of thing, but at the same time, just looking at the state of the tracks and the speed these beautiful locomotives go at, I am very surprised that none of them have derailed. A lot of the times it looks to be a very bumpy and uncomfortable ride. So the question is, how often are the lines inspected and how often are the tracks subjected to regular maintenance?
Dungeness can usually be relied on for some nice blustery conditions, but it didn't seem too bad there. That track doesn't half look wobbly in those telephoto shots, though.
I paused at 2:32 to read the comments, and now looking back you could be forgiven for thinking the tracks were extruded from a mastic gun after a liquid lunch.. It can't be good for locos to rock'n'roll like that.

@@TheSouthernerYTChannel it does look like there is a lack of ballast along some of the bumpy bits…the track has definitely sunk because of it…hopefully it doesn’t ruin those wonderful engines….14:17 is an accident waiting to happen
At 4:00,Is that the 'Winston Churchill' locomotive? It is one of the most American looking trains on the Rh and Dr in my opinion! Relaxing countryside until the train comes!
Yes, that is No9 "Winston Churchill". Along with No10 "Doctor Syn", the pair were designed around North American practice, as the larger cabs were thought to provide more weather protection for the drivers.
Has the PW dept gone on strike? Even without foreshortened views the track is in an awful state. Can’t do the loco springs much good either. Some great shots though. Hopefully you purchased a ticket some time during the day.
Needs TLC doesn't it. Expensive but necsasary. Maybe answer is tackle the worst half miles each year and bring it back to nice and level. Needs a Birthday, looks like US track doesn't it.
The track may look bad but it is probably better than it looks as the small gauge makes the lateral rail movement seem more extreme. But still it isn’t great
@@JamesSmith-zv9nw It looks worse from directly ahead and maybe shortened through a telephoto but they emphasise the obvious flaws. I noted a dip in one rail ahead of the loco and noticed the Loco corkscrew as it passed over. the track raised 1/2" or so could eliminate it and the weight shift that every passing Loco and carriage puts on it. Lack of funding must be an issue.

@@TheSouthernerYTChannel Yes, I'm well aware of the effect of foreshortening when using a zoom lens. Last time I rode the RHDR it was quite rough in places.
Even with the broadest brush of understanding, the PW looks almost dangerous in places. It's a shame as the condition of the PW may well tell the story of the RH&DR current financial position. I sincerely hope that this isn't the case.
The issue is vastly exacerbated by my heavy use of magnification over distance, in addition to the scale of the locomotives in comparison to their surroundings. However, if you feel the permanent way is an issue that needs addressing, then you know what to do: www.rhdr.org.uk/volunteering/
Those engines are beautiful and I would hate to see one of them on their side in the gravel because of poor track maintenance but with the look of the track it wont be long before that happens Please put some money into the maintenance of the track

Why do the rails hump upward in the middle and downward at the junctions; I would have expected more of the opposite?

A miniature railway built "to mainline specifications"
Where i can find a history of this great railway?
You can search up "Laurel and Hardy having fun at the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway" they opened up sections of the line
Laurel and Hardy reopened the section from New Romney to Dungeness in 1947, following World War 2.
Wenn man sich die Schienen ansieht, irgendwann entgleisen die Züge dort noch einmal! :(
Is that track really as rough as it looks in the videos?
Not as rough as in the video. And it's been renovated/renewed since this was filmed.
Deffo the track needs a good tamping. Or slow down, Dont take a coffee on the train, You might get burned.
Question are these tyr big steam engines or little engines size ?
Roughly 1/3rd scale of a full size Gresley A1.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel looks cool man really cool
Great video do you know how fast they are able to run
Thanks very much. 25mph, lower on some sections.
Some of that track will need fixing soon…some of the ballast looks a bit sparse.. great engines though
What is the max speed?
I believe it's 25mph, but trains rarely go above 20mph. However, as the trains are 1/3rd scale they often appear to be going much faster.
It is 25mph. Lower in certain sections.
I’ve been there before
Really need new rails

No. 9 looks very American.
Both No9 & No10 were styled to resemble Canadian Pacific locomotives, as it was felt that the larger cab would provide better weather protection.
