The AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT is as oddly positioned as was the original AMD R7 3800X CPU. In our 3800X review, we concluded "don't waste the money," noting that the 3700X made more sense. Now, with the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X being cheaper than at launch (it typically sits around $400, as the official new MSRP), a same-priced 3800XT leaves us scratching our heads. AMD is trying to raise ASP, it seems, because otherwise, the XT series doesn't have the same punch as other AMD launches. The company is starting to circle the Intel CPU release pattern of many years ago, and that concerns us. Either way, we're benchmarking the AMD R7 3800XT vs. the 3900X, 3800X, 3700X, Intel i9-10900K, i7-10700K, 10600K, and more. We briefly talk about Infinity Fabric clocks, overclocking, and voltages here, but our higher focus on overclocking is in the 3600XT CPU review (linked above). Benchmarks again look at the best CPUs for video editing, Adobe Premiere, gaming, Blender, code compile, and similar workloads.

Undervolting on Zen2 is iffy. Super iffy. Because of the clock stretching certain workloads might run fine while others will have worse performance.
Basically all modes where you do not apply a fixed voltage like you do in fixed overclocks are iffy to sample on Zen2. Each CPU got its internal FIT table and will react to any changes you do according to that table.
Certain things like having a lot of Vdroop under load will help with performance, but in the end the CPUs got an internal black box that reacts unhappy about you changing external parameters.

    3800XT $530 - 569 depending on where you look

The only time I see 3800/X/XTs advertised with the same prominence is as an onboard CPU option in prebuilt systems from various gaming-focused SI products (e.g.: www.ekfluidgaming.com/fgpcs/). I've always just assumed it's really meant to provide more gradation for SIs/etc. and not really intended to be a consumer facing product, but gets marketed that way for reasons I do not understand.

I feel like this is a case of their 7nm process maturing and getting better yields than it did in the early days of Zen2, so AMD is doing all they can to try to convince people to buy SKU's that yield them a higher profit margin rather than wasting them populating budget SKU's. Think of it this way, the 3800XT must be the most profitable SKU at this point as it's the highest single CCD CPU in the Zen 2 Ryzen portfolio. It requires the same components as the 3300X, 3600, 3600X, 3600XT, 3700X, and 3800X, literally all require 1 CCD + 1 cIOD, so the cost to manufacture every one of those seven CPU's is pretty much identical. They gave us the 3800X and no one really wanted it, so now they took what is the new top 10% of binned CCD's and gave us new $250, $400 & $500 SKU's with the hope of bringing their margins back up.

Why do you choose to not use a RAM-disk for the compiling benchmark? When you compile with just the SSD you measure the I/O limitations much more than the CPU-performance, when you compile on RAM then it shifts more towards measuring the CPU-performance. It is not that relevant for the end-conclusion of the overall performance but it seems to me that compiling on RAM is better for benchmarking and Level1Techs chooses to compile on RAM.

@@TJ.85 Yeah, it's a shame that people only buy PC's for gaming, right? This wasn't a response to Intel's better gaming performance, AMD has been behind Intel's top tier gaming performance for years. AMD released XT for two reasons... First, they wanted to take attention / momentum away from Intel's 10th gen launch. Second, they were sitting on a bunch of binned CCD's that they originally set aside for EPYC Milan CPU's, and rather than move those into lower margin existing Ryzen SKU's, they created new SKU''s with the hope of getting the most profit possible out of their best silicon. Intel has done this for years, it's just more egregious with AMD because they use the same Zen 2 CCD's across all Ryzen 3000, ThreadRipper and EPYC SKU's, so there is a massive amount of binning / product segmentation going on. Since the best testing stuff goes to EPYC and Threadripper, nearly all of the silicon with the most overclocking potential doesn't end up in Ryzen SKU's.

I own both a 3600X and a 3800X, and I'll tell you that the 3800X is absolutely noticeably better than the 3600X. I have the 3800X in my main Linux gaming rig, and maybe I hit the silicon lottery, but I get single-core benchmarks that equal a 10700K/9900K and on multi-core it's just unbelievable (my most recent Geekbench 5 multicore score was 10000). I use the 3800X in my main PC for a reason. The 3600X is a great part, but the 3800X is definitely worth it. Now I would definitely agree that the 3800X*T* is NOT worth it, considering I beat Jayztwocents's geekbench score by a whole 1000 points and he was running an *XT* and I was just running the *X*. And since I compile custom kernels for my gaming rig, having that multi-core performance is invaluable, it's twice as fast as the 3600X in kernel compilation.

@@evalangley3985 DING! That's the key, although AMD insists that XT aren't simply binned units, I think they're playing a game to get around the definition of binning. We all know that ALL Zen 2 based CPU's are using the same 8-core CCD's, some with cores disabled / failed to fill the 4, 6 and 12-core SKU's. It's pretty well known that AMD was binning the top 20% of CCD's for EPYC, and while EPYC has sold well, they seem to have some extra CCD's and decided to give us XT so they can maximize their chance of making maximum profit per piece of silicon while taking attention away from Intel's 10th Gen Core launch. I don't fault AMD for doing this, Intel does it as well, except normally it's an entire Core generation. This is not TSMC N7+ node process that will be Zen 3, simply because we known that Zen 3 moves to 8-cores per CCX and it would require completely retooling the Zen 3 7nm+ process for 4-core CCX's which would cost an insane amount of money. These chips are Zen 2, it's just that they are leftover CCD's that were originally binned for EPYC.
Also, this new system of using the same CCD's across all desktop and server products is the reason why Zen just doesn't overclock like previous AMD desktop CPU's, all of the best performing silicon now gets binned and reserved for their much higher profit margin server and threadripper products. Note that this can't be the case with Ryzen 4000 mobile APU's, as while they also technically use Zen 2 core design, they are on a monolithic die.

True story. I have my 3800x to its max stability along with my memory timings and frequencies. I love having the ability to push my hardware to where it is supposed to be, which is why there is an "x" at the end of the processor name. These processors are made for us geeks who love to fine tune our systems into beasts that they are supposed to be. AMD has ever been the underdog, and a lot of us have been watching them get better and better over the years. I still hold Intel responsible for their benchmark tweeking that made their processors look better than actuality. I also got my 3800x for a cheaper price than the 3700x on Black Friday, so yeah.

Basically my takeaway from this is "if you can snag a 3900x for $399, it's probably a good deal and makes a hell of a lot more sense than the XT parts."

Picked up a 3900x last week for $420 after tax. I really wanted a 3900xt, but couldn't justify the price difference based on the slightly higher clocks of the XT. I'm hitting 4.4GHz all core pretty easily. Looking to push it higher once the parts for my custom loop come in. So far I'm really impressed with the 3900X, besides how high the temps get. I thought I was OCing it too much, but from all the forums I've checked, it seems like the chips just run really hot. Hoping a bigger radiator will help. I have it on a 280mm rad right now, and it doesn't perform at the noise level I want. Ordered a 360mm radiator to try out.

"Waste of silicon that could be used for something else in AMD's line-up." Uh... not really... The chiplets are 8 cores each. The 3600/X/XT all have two cores tested as either defective or insufficient performance and are disabled. These are effectively throw aways; discount bin CPUs. Same can be said of the 3900X/XT since it has two chiplets each with two cores disabled for the same reason. Unless you go 16-core, the best-of-the-best per-core performance will be on the 3800XT now, which is getting priced (MSRP) same as the 3800X but doesn't come with a stock cooler. This is a slight refresh on the lithography of the CPU that really only benefits AMD's production either in costs or potential performance or both. Ideally the XTs would just replace the production of the Xs, but Ryzen 4000 is too soon coming. It exists because of production efficiency improvements; however briefly. Does it make sense to upgrade to it? No. Right now though, it is the best "median average" single-core performance CPU from AMD under $500. So for gaming, and/or streaming; it makes sense... it has purpose. Building a new streaming PC? Hard to recommend a different CPU if you don't get an nVidia card. Why wouldn't you? Lots of people have a strong personal bias against nVidia for a lot of anti-consumer business practices and refuse to support them. So... H.264 encoding on the CPU just works so nicely. I do wish we could stream with H.265 encoding though...

And do you think the non T parts prices will go lower and will they compete better with cometlake?

With the increasing popularity of emulation, I wonder how a multithreaded system like RPCS3 would benefit and scale with cores and frequency. It is known that Intel CPUs fare better here, but Ryzen has become a good option primarily due to the core advantage, even if marginal. Most importantly, it'd also be worthwhile to check how Zen 3's 8 core CCX compares to Zen 2's 2x4c CCD.

This video had me worried as I just ordered a 3800XT - but I'm confident I made the right choice. The biggest issue here seems to be the pricing comparison to the 3900x - my 3800XT cost around £310, whilse the £3900X is around £420. Definitely the better choice at 75% of the cost.

is the 3800XT single 8C16t chips or 2 4c/8t chiplets? With the power output they couldn't use 2 8c16t chiplets in the 3950x so I wonder if they are just trying to move stock which doesn't quite fit into designated specs of other CPUs e.g. too power hungry to meet tdp specs of a standard 3800x, 3950x or a 3300x?

Is this a waste of silicon or is the 3700X to 3800XT all coming off the same manufacturing batch with different binnings? I agree it makes no sense for the price increment but if it was the 3700 Silver and Gold and now manufacturing reliability is getting better so they release a 3700 Platinum off the same wafer isn't that the same thing?

So in the UK I can get a 3600xt for $100 less than a 3800xt, and a 3900x is another $85 more. So over here it seems the pricing is more spaced out to represent the differences in performance, based on these prices what would you recommend?
Ps. I'm not inclined to spend the extra for a 3900x

What good are new processors (even if they are good) when boards are either unavailable or massively overpriced? I have had an msi x470 pro carbon for a while now (with a 2700x) and I think its a dud for a number of reasons (crazy voltages, bad memory compatibility, instability etc...), but shopping for anything comparable (newer or better) is impossible to justify right now.

  • @luisifer9199
    @luisifer9199 3 роки тому +1

I find this title very harsh and unnecessarily so. This video made me so skeptical about even giving the CPU a try and it shouldn't have. I got the CPU alongside a MSI Tomahawk for combined 360€ about a week ago and at that price it's great. It's about what a 3900X costs alone. And the 3800XT does beat the 3900X overall in gaming performance and 8 cores is a good compromise for most of us casually streaming.
I get the hole point of this being justified upon release but maybe it'd be beneficial to name the titles more accordingly because as prices drop these overhauls 'that shouldn't exist' or 'are a waste of silicon' outperform their counterparts massively in price/value as time passes. F.e. i could've saved exactly 20€ if I chose a 3700X instead of the 3800XT.
