Rental companies have no business renting out EVs until they get on-site charging figured out. Expecting customers to charge to over 90% and find an available fast charger close to the airport is kind of insane. The last 20-30% of charging should really be done by the rental company on a level 2 charger rather than dumping that burden on the customer.

And charging issues etc.. are the reasons I did not buy a used EV from Hertz or any other car rental company. Customers and company apparently know nothing about proper charging and maintaining an EV. Don't own an EV if you aren't willing to learn and follow proper charging hygiene.

Agreed. Imagine if they had spent the money on charging infrastructure. Electricity is cheap once you have charging. So if they built the chargers on site they could say just return your car at whatever level it is energy is free. They would have a line up at the door.

I go one better I hire a vehicle through Thrifty from the Brisbane air port on the drive to the city I notice a strange smell on arrival at the motel I check the car and found a Dog shit behind the drivers seat. Complained when I returned the car and just got a shoulder surge by the bloke at Thrifty. I have never hired a vehicle from Thrifty since it has been over 10 years and I use to fly weekly for work that is over 500 vehicle hires ranging form 1 to 4 days they lost. Mr Thrifty CEO customer service is important and most people who have a bad experience never return and tell at least 10 other. I rented a car from Thrifty in Seattle this year. If you don't know, it rains a lot in Seattle. It rained and I turned on the front and rear wipers. The front wipers were almost completely worn out and barely worked. The rear wiper was totally worn out and completely worthless. The next day the tire pressure sensor said I had a flat tire but didn't say which tire. I checked all 4 tires and they seemed OK but it still made me panic when I had to drive on the freeway not knowing if I had a bad tire. I mentioned all this to Thrifty and they could not have cared less and did nothing about it. I will NEVER rent from Thrifty again and advise everyone to avoid them like the plague. Thrifty SUCKS!!!!!

Three years ago, similar experience with Hertz. Overcharge $500 for a L1 charger & adapter that no one from Hertz even mentioned. It was Not in the car when I rented it (but how do I prove that). Two years ago, rented a Tesla from Hertz again (either loyal to Tesla or stupid-Your call) and they made it right. After months of calls to Hertz customer dis-service, where each time they said, we will call back in 2-weeks (and never did).

I had an interesting experience renting a Tesla Y from Hertz in Toronto, I had ordered the car 2 weeks in advance online but I had to wait 45 minutes for the car. They offered me a Polestar instead but it was at 45% charge, they also had a Tesla 3 at 42%. These vehicles were on a set of slow chargers in the garage and were hours away from a full charge. I wanted the Y so I waited and watched the two half charged cars get rented without any explanation or assistance to the the first time EV renters.

What I got from Hertz and what they sold their fleet of Tesla is because it was getting too expensive with all the repairs and blamed the cars as no good but the real story is most people don't know how to drive EVs as they have instant acceration unlike a gas car and were causing accidentes.

We rented a Tesla model 3 from Budget 2 years ago at the Victoria British Columbia airport. It was a special offer, cheaper than a small compact car. I jumped at it as it was my first experience with an EV. Awesome car, made me want to buy one ever since. However Budget didn't brief me on how to unlock the car, start it, put into gear etc etc. So it was mass confusion right at the off. They told me if I return with less than 90% charge they would bill me $5/10%. I returned it at 10% because like you Sam we had time constraints. We were billed $45. Which was more expensive than if I had charged it myself but considerably cheaper than filling a stupid gas tank at $1.90/liter.

The car was returned 6 am to an unmanned car park with a hard-to-find key drop box. They are an unprofessional outfit but I think most of these car hire places are the same. Hertz official policy is to bring it back at 75% or within 5% of what you picked it up at. I've never picked it up with more than a 60% charge so it's never been a problem, but at the same time I was told that as long as the car is charged to 33% they're not going to charge you, and I've had 4 different locations tell me that. I was talking to one of the reps and he told me that since they only have 2-4 chargers onsite they regularly only charge the cars to 40-60% before changing it so they can still rent them out. Hertz will show you were the charging cable is and ask if you know how to charge it, so I'm guessing people don't have an issue with that.
I've never seen an Avis rental place that actually has a charger there. EVERY time I've rented from Avis the car has no more than a 25% charge. Once it only had a 5% charge! The funny thing is that Avis charges the most out of everyone. If it's under 10% you pay $70! If you bring it back between 10-70% it's $35.00, so it's VERY important with Avis that you show them the charge level when you leave so you don't get charged a fee when you bring it back. A HUGE advantage with Avis however is that they usually won't charge you an upgrade fee if the car you want is out of stock. I've gone in with a reservation for a Chevy Volt and left with a Mustang MachE with ZERO extra fees. I've had the same experience with Thrifty, but that was back when I rented Gas cars.

The 10 to 80 or 90 per cent charging interests me. When you give figures for range when you promote EVs, is that the usable range IE 80 per cent or 100 percent. So if you say a vehicle has a 300 mile range is it practically just 240 miles. Same for charging times. Seems like a good opportunity to mislead people about the benefits of particular EVs.

  • @martinwinlow

When Hertz started its 'big EV sell-off', I checked out the mileage of a dozen or so examples on Hertz's used EV sales site and compared the mileages to the same age (some quite often considerably older than the EVs) and the mileage on the EVs was *much* higher, often 3 or more times higher. Curiously, no-one has raised this as being in any way relevant to why Hertz was disposing of the EVs they bought!

Rental car companies sell their cars when they reach the end of their warranty. For gas cars, it's usually after 3 years or 36k miles. For EVs, it's usually when they approach 80k miles. Hertz is selling their tesla's because they're at the end of their rental life. They have a lot to sell, so they want to trick people into believing they're dumping them. I think they have 2 problems - using Teslas as a rental vehicle, and relying on customers to charge up before returning.
Teslas are great for the owner, but they do need a bit of getting used to, as the controls are quite unconventional. And since half the functionality is with the app, you miss out a lot of conveniences with a rental Tesla since you don’t have the app linked to the vehicle.
I just recently went to New Zealand and rented an EV for 10 days with Europcar, and it was great! The EV I got was a Kia Niro EV, which is basically a Hyundai Kona Electric clone, and it’s as good an EV as any. The best thing is, Europcar just said to bring it back - they don’t care what the state of charge is.
Rental car companies really need to learn how do things properly, but it’s easier just to blame the vehicle and go back to what they’ve always done before.
I do hope that they can make money with their EV rentals, because I always look for EVs when I have to rent a vehicle, and would really hate it if no rental companies have any in stock because they don’t want to bother with it.

Interesting video. I rented a Polestar 2 with Hertz at Adelaide Airport a year ago to get the EV experience. Their staff member came out and showed me how to use the car, which was nice. The boot is opened by swiping your foot under the rear bumper. There is no way anyone would know without being shown. So that was all good. The car itself was very nice but the center console is far too wide and high. I kept elbowing my drink in the holder, and honestly the car felt more cramped and small than my small Hyundai hatchback. It seems to have been designed by someone who doesn't actually drive cars.
When I returned the vehicle (after slow 2kw charging it all night at home) I knew there was zero chance of returning it with a 90% full battery. Not only because the car charged so slowly, but because I had to drive 25km to the airport. Hertz of course happily charged me a premium for charging.
The answer why people don't want to rent EVs is obvious to anyone who has ever rented one: it's really difficult to return it fully charged. A normal car? Just fill it up near the airport and you're good to go within a few minutes. That is not the case for EVs. Adelaide Airport is now getting some free fast chargers near the airport (at IKEA), but at 7kw you're going to have to park in that loading bay for possibly hours.
The only people who seem to be confused by why people don't want to rent EVs is the extremely highly paid CEOs themselves, because they've never had to pay to hire one.

I agree, they should charge it almost at cost if they want customers. They love the boardroom Excel presentation heralding the improvement to the bottom line because of the famed lower maintenance costs, but don't want to pass any savings on to the customer. Indeed, charging is leveraged as a gouging opportunity - and worse, they trick you like a captive rube.
A disrespectful way to treat a customer. The executives exhibit at the maturity of belligerent, spoiled 14 year old. This behaviour is endemic in the corporate culture, which thinks: business is a scam, they are entitled, customers and investors are an eternally renewable unwitting cash cow to be duped and milked, and work is passive income. The traditional auto manufacturer's attitude.

Unprecedented fires raging from Canada to the Amazon from 2023 to 2024 were at least FOUR times more likely because of climate change, according to a first annual assessment of wildfires covered by the Press Association. The first “state of wildfires” report also finds that carbon emissions from wildfires in 2023-2024 were 18% above average, emitting 8.3 BN tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, PA says. The Guardian says that, according to the report, Canada’s “record-shattering” wildfires produced “nearly as much greenhouse gas emissions in one season as would be expected over a decade of fires in normal circumstances”. As well as fires in Canada and the Amazon, last year also saw deadly fires in Hawaii, Texas, and other states that killed OVER 110 people, as well as the biggest single fire ever recorded in the EU, which burned 1000 square kilometres of Greece, the Guardian says.

Hey Sam i couldn't agree more with how bad the customer service was when i hired a Polstar 2 from Thrifty car rental for the day. As i had never driven an ev before i was excited to do so. Once i sighned all the paperwork, i was given the key to the car with not one explanation about how the car worked, charging etc. I went to the car did not even know how to get in the car let alone how to start it. I returned to the office and asked for some advice on the vehicle, only to be treated like i was an idiot for not knowing how the car functions. No explanation on basic functions, etc heating lights, wipers charging. When i returned the car, i complained to the return attendant who couldnt care less. He said put it in the survey, which i never received. I too got told to return it with a 90% charge. I also got charged extra but could not workout the confusing bill. All in all a very unsatisfactory experience with the Polstat 2 mainly due to the i dont give a shit attitude of Thrifty car rental, steer clear is my advice. Regards Cal, love your channel.

Tesla is garbage at repairs should have done more research. need the battery tech to exceed 1200km one charge as most rentals are used to travel around. daily is around 800km max driving before resting.

In my experience, if I reserve an economy car and the agency has no economy cars when I arrive, I get an upgrade at the same price. If I get an EV for the price of an economy car, I'd be happy, but I drive an EV myself, so I don't have this guy's anxiety about driving or charging one.
If I were the rental car agency, I wouldn't rent an EV to someone who had never driven or charged one, especially a CCS vehicle. Maybe charging a Tesla is simple enough, but navigating all of the different CCS networks can be a nightmare. It was a nightmare for me at first, and I wasn't driving a rental car on my way to an airport to catch a plane.
If the driver will never need to charge, he might be OK with an EV, but I'd still hesitate to rent one to him. A driver at least needs to know about regen braking and one-pedal driving if he might find himself in this mode. On my Bolt, that's moving the shifter from D to L, and it's an easy thing to do unintentionally. A renter should at least be warned about it.
I wouldn't assume that Thrifty execs thought much about the practicalities of charging when they came up with their 90% rule, and they presumably didn't train their agents to train people renting an EV either. It's just like a gas car except that you're pumping electricity rather than gasoline, right?
