  • It is believed that nada (vibration) and Gyana (illumination) are two parallel manifestations of shakti. One leads to and awakens the other. Devi is the ever pervading undisturbed intelligence that gives birth to both nada and gyana.
Adi Shankaracharya's Bhawanyashtakam is a call to the divine shakti, to illuminate the path towards this intelligence; a cry to remain steadfast to this continuous path of seeking. Through the recurring motif - gatistvam gatistvam tvameka bhawani - Shankaracharya reminds us that we continue to walk the path towards devi residing beyond all samsara, she is Parashakti - untouched and undeterred by it all.
"In this ocean of birth and death,
I am a coward, who dare not face sorrow,
Filled with lust and sin, with greed and desire,
And tied I am, by the this useless life that I lead,
and through this, I seek you, my refuge who is beyond this stage too."
