  • I've been looking for one of these for a long time! This is a Mini-Piano made by Kawai, a full-function piano in a small form factor made for kids! This one needs a bit of work, but it still is a cool example of the wide array of cute and unusual pianos that have been made in the past. Piano as found at Bill Kap Piano Company, 14130 Euclid Ave. East Cleveland, Ohio 44112

The Japanese are great at elevating almost anything to an art form. Apparently, that includes pianos for the little ones. I loved the video!

Very interesting and unusual. As mentioned, Steinway built full size pianos with narrower keys and raised pedals for Josef Hofmann when he was a child prodigy. Very interesting story. Thanks!

Wow! I love this and I know a litle girl who wants to play piano that would love something like this. I have never seen something like this before. I subscribed to your channel after watching a few of your videos as I found them very interesting to watch, you know your stuff! I am going to look into this little piano and see if I can find one for my little niece. Thank you

Surely the shop should have it tuned before it's sold, so people can hear it.

I think this piano store is half store and half museum, and has perhaps several hundred musical instruments. If one pays even 75 dollars to tune that many instruments one could see why some fall out of tune. I am not even sure this piano was for sale as it is so rare.

@@ThePianoforever Aha. My thought is this should be in a curated museum. It is a cool thing.

I have only read about this piano over the years, and although I have visited perhaps a thousand piano stores this was the only one I have ever seen, it still excites me to think that I finally found one. It was in the same store that had the 1850's Chickering Concert Grand. We have a lot of videos from that shop that we will be uploading when we get a little caught up on editing.

Even if it was out of tune, still would have liked James to play his demo composition on it.

That is a really interesting keyboard layout. 51 keys, the highest key is a G, the lowest an F as far as I see, so the range is kinda like an old key instrument (some Harpsichords and many other Spinets, et cetera...). It's easy to understand why such design choice took place.

Get this: there are one-quarter violins tuned to the same four notes as a regular violin, also designed for small children who cannot yet play a big, bulky violin.

I've been going down the ThePianoforever rabbit hole since I did a search for Mini Piano', thinking I micht prefer a small acoustic vs digital. This was not the first video to come up, but glad to find it. My grandparents had a similarly sized piano, and my sister has one currently. (Don't know the brand.) In my search, one of the first websites to come up was out of the UK on the challenges of tuning these, the need for special equipment, and so forth. It would be wonderful to have one, but not very practical.

Happy New Year to you and your family, James.
There are a lot of fine young musicians in Japan and this is an example of why, the Japanese are
perfectionist and have no qualms about starting their children at an early age and encouraging them to
    develop their talents
You know what that's like ,having started very young and having been encouraged by your family.
    Cheers,
    Rik Spector

Hmmmm, that logo with the wings, 1940's era. Egyptian looking? Ermmmm no, the wings remind me of Axis Alliance implemented 1940, and Harp in middle, Steinway of course. Wonder if the identification tag removal might have link to that ancestry?

I learned to play on a 1907 Bechstein with that same design music desk. Why didn’t you contact Kawai to enquirer as to the origin?
