  • In our third visit to Lowleigh, a passing station on the ex-GWR branch which wends its way from Kidderminster to the market town of Brombury, we see the introduction of a diesel service on the line. It is 1958 and a class 122 diesel mechanical single unit replaces the small prairie and its B-set which previously provided the passenger service.

    This is an absolutely superb railway with excellent narration. I cannot think of another model which has such a realistic ambience and portrays the stock in a truly perfect and believable way.

    Watching this is like therapy. The exquisite scenery, the relaxed pace, the omnipresence of birdsong and chimes, you can almost feel the warmth on ones face. And Julia's rather pacifying quality of narration and presentation.
    Just marvelous.
    It's funny how nowadays we tend to have a social rejection of diesel as a nostalgia, and as a forced change on a system filled with pastoral pleasantries, a bit like lowleigh.
    There's some wonderful footage of the steam diesel changeover from the mid-fifties in the NZR, and they were literally public holidays, with parties of school children being toured through the new railcars.
    In a nation that had advancing ownership of private cars (soon to be second only behind the US in car ownership for population) the bright red bulk of the north American Da class adorned advertising, appeared in street parades, even appearing mainstream newsworthy, and instantly became the face of the New Zealand railways.
    The face of modernity, of an advanced progressive nation, of the economic surge after the wilderness of the depression and the austerity of postwar recovery.
    Also and more pragmatically, in an age of social conciousness coupled with white collar aspirations, it became the darling of the recruiting department.
    Wonderful channel, really enjoying it, and a picture postcard England I've never known :)

      Thanks for your kind words and interesting perspective. We look back now with great nostalgia to the days of steam but as trainspotters at Newcastle Central Station in the '50s we were very excited when the shiny new diesels appeared and would almost boo when our 'home' A3s (and even Flying Scotsman!) appeared. Happy days.
      Best wishes. We are hoping to visit NZ, Covid allowing, next year, Peter

    Two things - what a fantastically well integrated background - and it's nice to see someone understanding how real trains accelerate.

    • @peterharrison6230
      @peterharrison6230  4 роки тому

      Thank you Roger - I must admit to being pretty pleased with the background. It's a series of photographs printed on transfer paper then transferred to the light blue backboard. Then hedges, trees etc immediately in front of the backboard are colour matched to the photograph. Also there are no 'square corners' - all curved. I don't know if you have been following the Lowleigh story. The first video is entitled 'A Day at Lowleigh Station' on UA-cam. here there are some better views of the roads vanishing in the distance by placing photos of actual roads behind the model.

    If this does not send you back to the late 50’s, then I am not sure what will. Great photography and background sounds certainly set the scene👍

      Thanks for your kind words. The idea for this video came from a ride on a 'bubblecar' at the South Devon Railway and a picture of one in service at Much Wenlock (not so far from Lowleigh!) in 'Western Steam in Colour' (Ian Allan). I hope you enjoy the other 'Lowleigh' videos. Best wishes, Peter

    That grass texture is wonderful. Nice memories of my teenage years.

    • @peterharrison6230
      @peterharrison6230  3 роки тому

      Thanks that's kind. The grass is easy to do - B&Q hanging basket liner torn up, stuck down and painted with with sap green watercolour as per Barry Norman's 'bible' - 'landscape Modelling' (publ. Wild Swan). Pleased to bring back memories - it was Tyneside electrics and J27s thrashing through Wallsend on rattling coal trains for me (quite different to Lowleigh!). Enjoy the other videos in the series.
      Best wishes, Peter

      Thanks Kev - the backscene was done first - local photographs printed on transfer paper then transferred to the light blue/white painted hardboard backboard. Fiddly and I'm not sure I'd do it again but probably worth it. Also, all corners curved. Peter

    Hi Peter and Julia, Discovering your peaceful and harmonious 'model' world is a real joy. So thank you very much for sharing your passion. And it blend so well with the 'Watermill' composed by Ronald Binge. A real treat and so nicely produced ! Greetings.

    It's fantastic to see another instalment from Lowleigh.....so needed in these troubled times we live in. Exquisite modelling, photography and narration.......very evocative of 'Railway Roundabout' from the 1950s. Well done to all involved! PS I trust we will continue to see ex-GWR steam on the branch?

    • @peterharrison6230
      @peterharrison6230  4 роки тому

      Thank you so much for your kind words. You're right about the Railway Roundabout style though it's not intentional. I have watched the entire series but not at the time - we didn't have a tele in those days - just a homemade Davy Crocket hat and an oval of Hornby tinplate! Sorry but can't promise too much GWR steam in the nest 2 episodes; in the next video 44044 is in charge of the FO cattle train and (somewhat unbelievably) in the 5th of the series a Midland 2P heads an excursion. You'll be pleased to know that 1470 (I know, should be at Ashburton!) is featured in the 6th video assuming I can get the wretched Hornby model to work! Stay safe and happy modelling, Peter

    This is such a beautiful layout; absolutely exquisite. I could hardly believe it was actually a model when I saw ‘A Day at Lowleigh’
    Do you happen to know who the oboist is on the title and credit music? Sounds very much like my wife’s old principal (Richard Weigall). If is that would be perfect serendipity as he’s a keen 00 modeller himself.

    • @peterharrison6230
      @peterharrison6230  3 роки тому

      Thanks for your kind comments Nigel. The music is 'The Watermill' by Ronald Binge performed by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra (Bratislava). There is no credit for the oboist in the sleeve notes. Peter

      Thanks for your kind words Gary. Sorry I haven't a plan but the whole layout can be seen at 2.56 on the first Lowleigh video:
      ua-cam.com/video/z2PhJliCNqQ/v-deo.html
      The whole thing is 10' by 8' with one 10' side taken up with haphazard and badly thought out storage roads (you won't see them on the video!). Best wishes, Peter

    Oh dear, modern image comes to Lowleigh! Is this the thin end of the wedge? Seriously though, I can remember when bug-units (as we always called them) first appeared on the Western Region back in the 1950's and I even remember seeing W55000 -- glad she's still around Good video, as always.

      Quite right Steve but please keep watching - you'll be pleased to know that steam is not finished yet. Look out for a Midland 4F in 'Lowleigh 4', a '2P' in 'Lowleigh 5' and in 'Lowleigh 6' the railcar moves on to pastures new. Stay safe, Peter
