    Whenever I saw an OM2 setup for live events I participated in, I always felt like I had to do less (as a singer) with OM2 and I hear myself a lot more from the stage monitors without feedback. The clear top end with added boost to 150-200HZ range worked really well for my voice as a lead singer. The tonal color captured in this review video was no surprise to me. I understand it's not the most flat/balanced sounding mic and really geared towards singing voice. AKG D5 sounded very smooth as well and V70d sounded very exquisite. One thing I don't like about OM2 is the handling noise it picks up and I think it was covered well in this video. Thank you for another great review video.

    I’m familiar with the Audix microphones only because I know Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam loves these mics. They’ve seen use both live and in the studio when recording their albums. Which makes perfect sense actually, because a $100 dynamic mic with a somewhat gritty upper end that can withstand abuse and constant usage for decades is perfect for the kind of gritty dirty grungy rock sound of a band like Pearl Jam as opposed to an opulent and pristine sound of a Neumann condenser.

    I've been using these for 20 years for live stage vocals. They are as tough as SM-57s, so I buy them used these days.

      They definitely don’t have the same following so I imagine that used you get a great deal, and they give a much clearer sound compared to the 58.

      @@Podcastage yes, I find the 58 to be darker, as you do. My other used mic bargain pick is the PVM-45. It actually fooled the Audix guys when I was in Portland, they thought it was their i5.

      OM2s are useful in live sound for taming feedback in challenging environments. Obviously it's better to get the basics right like proper speaker positioning, but OM2s are a possible solution if you don't have full control over the configuration of the room. More recently, I've found that the sE V7 serves this purpose almost as well while having other strengths too.

      I've settled on OM7 for small clubs for singing heavy metal (e.g. sound engineer nightmare). But it worked as a charm. Before Audix I tried every popular microphone from Shure to Blue and I suffered a lot.

      @robertfoshizzle 2 роки тому +2

      Definitely better used deals on OM2s than SM-57s and SM-58s too. I rarely see used 57s and 58s for less than $60 unless they're fake or beat to hell. I found a used OM2 in excellent condition for under $40 with taxes at Guitar Center. Haven't given it a full test yet, but if I find any uses for it other than live vocals, I might pick up more in the future. It's very solid/heavy and seems well built.

    I can see this mic working extremely well for aggressive male vocals. Not sure why I've never tried one. Still prefer the e835 for spoken word, and because the off-axis rejection is the best I've seen on a stage.

      I liked the Om3 slightly better on his voice. The sE V7 sounds more prominent in the bass range and less prominent in the high mids. Hard to tell if it's too much just hearing the voice, but depending on the voice type, this could mudden the sound and prevent the vocalist from cutting through the mix.

      The Om7 sounds very good and has the second highest off-axis rejection of any microphone I know*, but you have to keep the distance and angle to the mouth VERY consistent. For me having a quite dynamic voice it's just too difficult adjusting the distance to the Om7 during singing, so I went for the Om6. The sound is similar, just a bit less harshness at 4-8 k, less bass and the off-axis rejection is still very good.
      *#1 is the audix Om5

    • @moristar

      @@fidrewe99 Well, I have to keep it pressed against my lips to be heard over the band in small venues, so no problem with distance consistency :D But for softer music I guess I would also preferred my other favourites like EV or Blue 100\200. I just never liked Shure.

    I used to use one for live with a technical death metal band. Worked great. I also had a beta 57. The sound men loved me....... super cardioid = way better for live because it blocks out external noise better such as monitors....

  • @furcifer8218
    @furcifer8218 Рік тому

    Well, I'm the Lead trumpet player in a LOUD rock band with a 5-piece horn section looking for a fixed-stand boom mic with a more modern sound with a big presence and treble boost and a more neutral mid section and a hypercardioid polar pattern with the null areas at 150 degrees, so... What I find is that a common foamy wind screen does GREAT for eliminating bell clangs, reducing mute knocks and plosives in my backup vocals, and taking the burrs off the crunchy. It's not as harsh as the SM57 or other similar "instrument mics", but still gives me everything I want when I want to really burn a high note. Typical trumpet SPL on this kind of music at 3"-6" away from the mic is going to be 124-128 dB, and this mic can handle it very well.
    Now, for my electric guitar cab with heavy distortion, I prefer my Audix i5 to this or my Shure SM57's. But I actually found the OM-2 by trying to close-mic my old acoustic beach guitar - again, beefed up the track much better than my Shure SM57/58's, and sounded better coming through the big 15" PA speakers. The OM-2 is better for a really strong soprano voice, especially outdoors where you're more likely to have a really harsh PA, and/or in front of a loud band.

I don't care about proximity effect, as I can just eq that later, so I could get very close to record. Does this caveat make certain mics less effective due to capsule placement?

    Listening with JBL 104 monitors. AKG D5 seems to give the most balanced output, closely followed by the e835 which is a little brighter than the D5 due to a wee bit lesser lows, and then the Lewitt. The rest seems very similar sounding, almost nasal and muddy. All mics are really good, it just really depends on how it matches the user's voice. Thanks for the content. :-)

I've read a lot of issues with the USB port on the regular Yeti, and since here in Brazil those Mics are pretty expensive I'm a bit concern. I'll be using it both PC and Android phone for lectures and acoustic guitar recording. Hi the greatest mic reviewer (in my (and many others, I can bet) opinion), recently I have been looking for a mic for teleconference purposes. I have been looking for a mic less than $200 with maximum possible noise cancellation/rejection (I have a noisy child in another room and my PC and AC noises are annoying) when my distance from the mic is expected to be 2 to 3 feet. Typical condenser mics should be OK for my distance (from the mic) but not for noise. I do not have a dynamic mic and although it seems that they might be good for noise but not for the distance (in general). A note: I prefer a mic with a better bass response but that priority is in 3rd position. Do you have some suggestions or recommendations? Thank you.

    Great review. The red headed child is only a problem if mommy or daddy doesn't have red hair and also if it is a girl, when she turns 16.

    I really like microphones made or assembled in Liechtenstein. If I ever discover one I'll let you know.

      I just reached around and grabbed my NTi-Audio test equipment which includes the NT-M4260 Class 2 measurement microphone. NTi-Audio is a Liechtenstein based company.

      @@peterblackmore7560 whahahahaa! Cheers Peter. Me and my big mouth. You got me. It's probably a tax thing, but still. Great!!
      Best reply I ever got on UA-cam.

      @@EdoDijkgraaf The tax thing always comes up with that country for a good reason! Strangely though, the key people at NTi are intense acousticians. It is quite possible that they were always residents there. Glad that I gave you a good laugh!!

      @@peterblackmore7560 more than just that. I own a small communication agency. We have a UA-cam channel. (won't link to it since this is Bendrew's channel, not mine). The channel is there for Belgian and Dutch entrepreneurs who want to create content. Julian Krause inspired me to do a video on measurement and correction. I think the NTI story has to be in it.

    The handling noise, boom and other resonant tests scare me away from the OM2 a bit. It sounded great, as did the other mics compared with it except the AKG D5. That was a harsh high frequency buzzer to my ears.
