Laura might be pregnant. Luke gets drunk. Bobbie overhears Luke and Laura talking and confronts Luke about whether he raped Laura. (General Hospital, Luke Spencer, 1979)

What a scene between Anthony and Jackie. I’m blown away the acting especially Luke explaining the rape to Bobbie. The emotions were palpable. So impressed.
I find it so comforting that actors like Genie and Jackie and Tony played it out on those stages of General Hospital for over forty years. Each leaving for a time but back they came and picked their beloved character back up. I am devastated about the death of Jackie. So bittersweet. My Dad and I used to watch this and the Edge of Night every day after school for me, and work for him! We bonded over this, and it was lovely:)
I'm glad he admitted it to Bobbie instead of denying or minimizing it. He had his reasons (in his own mind) for forcing himself on Laura, yet he also knew it was wrong. His interaction with Laura when he brought her flowers afterwards in the hospital spoke volumes of denial from both of them. All Luke ever did was minimize it. He was drunk, he found out about the hit on his life and knew he’d be dead soon so he had to have her before he died. Years later when they spoke on it after Lucky learned the truth, Luke said “when it was over”which is him using distancing language from his actions. Laura immediately corrected him and said “you mean when you were done”. He then said “when I was done”
“He had his reasons for forcing himself on” her? Yeah. As teen girls in the 80s, seeing this kind of “romance” and women portrayed in music & “exercise” videos kinda f$&:ed us up

The music, lol. One of the greatest soap storylines. I remember being at work in a hospital when Luke and Laura’s wedding aired. Every TV in every patients room was tuned in,and we all watched, patients and nurses alike.
My stepdad was a very hard worker. Never missed work until he had a heart attack. Had to be off of work for a bit. He hated soap operas before that. He took my Mom to an early dinner one day, but rushed her through dinner so that they could be back home before General Hospital came on (It was the day Laura was returning). My Mom said to him, "Are you serious? You finally take me out to dinner and rush me through it for this?" All of us kids and our Grandma (her Mom) thought it was hilarious...until she went on strike at home for a week. 🙄😂 Ahhhh...the good ole days 🤣
Wow, his confession near the end is frightening. I think I actually remember that scene from years ago when it first came on TV. I wonder what Bobbie thought of all of this??

It’s pretty messed up. They took on the issue of rape and really did a amazing job at first. But then dropped the ball. And I get the complexities, especially with the issue of date and marital rape but that wasn’t the case here. I will say they did a better job with the characters of Lucky and Lulu when they learned the truth. That was more realistic.

So this conversation about him being upset she isn't pregnant and his reaction about her being pregnant with Lucky and LuLu, totally contracts his stance on wanting kids later. They showed he loved his kids, but often wished he never had them. I hated those parts
I guess you had to be there in that time of a certain age to appreciate the excitement and fun of the disco craze. It was bananas. Too bad it wore itself out and a backlash ensued. I remember that music fondly.
I used to run home from school and watch this my Dad would let me and i lost my Dad as a teen a year later.. whenever i watch this or see her i always remember Luke & Laura...goes by in a blink sometimes you think wow so long ago..then you realize its a flash
Right now I am ready to watch the next episode-wow- would watch every day and when at work, we would turn the radio on and listen….so much water over the dam since then….thanks for a brief and pleasant memory
Loved this show especially the Rick Weber/Monica Quartermaine story line…I was team Scotty and abhorred Luke. I remember the Cassidines, Elizabeth Taylor and “the left handed boy”! For years, anytime I heard the “rape song” in a club I wanted to throw up…Christopher Cross cleaned it up with “Longer than….”
They ruined Herb Alpert's song. It's a nice song, but it will forever be the "rape song". If I was him I would have been very angry at GH for that. They should have not used any music.
I remember how much I loved GH and never missed an episode, but when they played out this whole ridiculous rape story and turned it into a romance...that was it for me. There aren't words to describe how wrong it was.
I think at the time, they didn't realize the chemistry between TG n GF n so the storyline went from there, I think they tried to portray it kinda like a seduction
If you'd kept watching you would have seen years later when their son Lucky found out about the rape. It forced Luke and Laura to actually come to terms with it. The scenes between the two discussing the events was some top notch acting. You can find that storyline here on youtube.
I was a young teen when the Luke and Laura story began and thought their story was romantic and full of adventure. Now when I see this, it is so creepy and wrong. Their love story is epic but why did the story writers have rape as the beginning.
As controversial as this in particular and other story lines emerged...it turned General Hospital into a cultural juggernaut. I remember zipping to my best friends house immediately after school to meet up- she and her THREE sisters went to Catholic school - and us gaggle of girls would huddle around the television, chain smoking and drinking soda - in their basement rec room. People maybe didnt know it at the time, but Genie Francis who played Laura, had been on the show for 2+ years..as a relatively minor cast member, she was the teenage daughter of Dr Leslie Weber ..a main character on the show+ and she really didn't appear often or have s storyline..until..the shows creator and head writer, Gloria Monty decided to rejuvenate the lackluster soap, which was not doing well with the ratings, so much so it was close to being cancelled. Her idea was to attract a new, young audience - with characters and stories that would intrigue young adult viewers. So she started by having a meeting with Frances and her parents to inform them her role was about to be greatly expanded - meaning maximum working hours for the then still only 14 yr old - and she eas ready for the opportunity. So the before mentioned barely seen character of Laura stepped out of the shadows when her character ran away from home and IT became the new focus. Anyone remember that? I do, because thst story of a troubled, moody teenage girl, distraught with her parents marriage problems and her own insecurity really resonated. Laura became a polarizing character on her own - tnan Monty handpicked Anthony Geary to play Luke...and the show just exploded. Its true, "Luke" was initially written to be a bad guy for a limited time. Meaning he'd probably die or just leave Port Charles forever ...but the chemistry of Luke and Laura drew record breaking audiences..so show writers changed the role inro a very long story of love and redemption. Fans loved it, sponsors loved it. I guess there was an overwhelmingly open minded acceptance for sticky subject matter - no WOKE agenda or cancel culture. Anyway...for me watching these old episodes occasionally, its like a real time capsule...😊
Wait... Where did tf "woke" agenda come from. The dude RAPED an almost underaged married girl. If they did protest that, what, it would be wrong? How about if they wrote in the storyline that she got pregnant and had an abortion?
@@dawnvalentine74 You don’t know much about the history of soap operas, do you? As a matter of fact, one of the primary reasons the soaps were created was to do just that--teach moral lessons. The other primary reason was to sell household products.

OMGosh.......Does this open the memory flood gates‼️Like it was yesterday ----and that's scary!!! I loved this cast!!!❤️Tony is a great actor!! As are Genie and Jackie!! I'm so glad that "Laura" is still an icon of Port Charles and looking as beautiful as ever!! And I'm devastated 😭💔about Jackie Zeman, our "forever" nurse Bobbi Spencer or per Luke--"Barbara Jean." (Cancer sucks.) That rape storyline, though----and waaayy back in the day.🏆🙌🏼👏🏼👏🏼I'll never forget that music......or the great love story that ensued. Such on-screen chemistry!! R.I.P. Bobbi (Prayers for your family!!❤️🙏🏼)
Luke and Laura on the run looking for the “Left Handed Boy” was everything!
Laura: “I couldn’t cope with taking a human life”. Wow even back in the day they followed the science lolol
Miss Anthony Geary so much. Such a Great Actor. And Jacklyn Zeman you will be missed as well 🥲 RIP Another Great Actor.
God, this makes me feel old. I lived for this show.
Luke had the mother of All comb over’s
Going through some of Jackie's work. RIP ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I remember this like it was yesterday… Rip Jackie you will be miss.
Kinda hard to believe Luke and Laura are considered a great love story. TBH, Luke is pretty toxic.
A disco where people’s voices are louder than the music. LOL. It looks like the people in the background are dancing to what Luke is saying.
Soaps were the best in 80s ... My grandma and I watched this together with her client. 😢
So this conversation about him being upset she isn't pregnant and his reaction about her being pregnant with Lucky and LuLu, totally contracts his stance on wanting kids later. They showed he loved his kids, but often wished he never had them. I hated those parts
They ruined Luke in the end.
Yeah the writers rewrote history. Just ignore the rewrites. He wanted kids and was excited having kids!
It is so weird they wrote a story where Luke rapes Laura and then they fall in love
I was six years old when this came out. I remember this storyline as if it aired yesterday.
The wedding of the century. I couldn't wait to get home to find out what happened that day
Im so grateful I found this clip on UA-cam
But wait....Laura don't be too hasty! You and Luke aren't quite done yet. The story isn't over!
And he thought Laura was pregnant from the rape. Loved how he handled her trying to tell him she was not.
The background music 😅😂😊
The disco, or the cheesy, campy soap opera music? Or BOTH, lol!?
@@stellarocquie7957 well first it was the cheesy soap music. But the Disco makes a close second LOL.
I guess you had to be there in that time of a certain age to appreciate the excitement and fun of the disco craze. It was bananas. Too bad it wore itself out and a backlash ensued. I remember that music fondly.
@@tinaxykis4172 I WAS THERE. I remember this scene. And I loved Disco. But that's not what this is. It's that 70's background.
I used to run home from school and watch this my Dad would let me and i lost my Dad as a teen a year later.. whenever i watch this or see her i always remember Luke & Laura...goes by in a blink sometimes you think wow so long ago..then you realize its a flash
The best story lines including Luke & Laura were the best. I couldn't get into the show once they were phased out. Bobby will be missed for sure.
If you watched at the time you’d understand this more.
Horseshit. I watched it when it aired and it was sick then too. Don’t justify the writers of this show making rape romantic. How pathetic !!
👑 #BobbieSpencer ❤ Thank you 🕯️
Thank you for this video. 🙏😢 ( but now I’ve got to go back and watch a bunch of old GH videos. )❤️🔥
I was only 10 years old in 1979 and watched these episodes.
What a twisted storyline
Right now I am ready to watch the next episode-wow- would watch every day and when at work, we would turn the radio on and listen….so much water over the dam since then….thanks for a brief and pleasant memory
And they turned this into a love story?
Link to the channel 😊

Such a terrible idea 🤦🏽♀️
I lived every day to see GH during the summer when I was a teenager
Loved this show especially the Rick Weber/Monica Quartermaine story line…I was team Scotty and abhorred Luke. I remember the Cassidines, Elizabeth Taylor and “the left handed boy”! For years, anytime I heard the “rape song” in a club I wanted to throw up…Christopher Cross cleaned it up with “Longer than….”
They ruined Herb Alpert's song. It's a nice song, but it will forever be the "rape song". If I was him I would have been very angry at GH for that. They should have not used any music.
I was 4 when this was happening and he was DISGUSTING even to a 4 YEAR OLD.
Genie Francis was so young, but what an incredible actress and what amazing storylines💕
P. S.
What is the ice princess?
I remember how much I loved GH and never missed an episode, but when they played out this whole ridiculous rape story and turned it into a romance...that was it for me. There aren't words to describe how wrong it was.
I think at the time, they didn't realize the chemistry between TG n GF n so the storyline went from there, I think they tried to portray it kinda like a seduction
@@MaryEverling I think you may be right but I really wish they had been more creative and found a better way.
@@crystalmeier6579 Well that was then, this is now! Times have definitely changed
If you'd kept watching you would have seen years later when their son Lucky found out about the rape. It forced Luke and Laura to actually come to terms with it. The scenes between the two discussing the events was some top notch acting. You can find that storyline here on youtube.
@@robertlanier2235 yes I remeber them, very emotional
I grew up watching this. I’m 48 but remember this. Also Sonny, Jason,Jax, Jagger, Stone, Robyn, Brenda etc….
I was a young teen when the Luke and Laura story began and thought their story was romantic and full of adventure. Now when I see this, it is so creepy and wrong. Their love story is epic but why did the story writers have rape as the beginning.
It saddens me that I never watched this soap. Was real big on days of our lives, another world and guiding light
Luckily I was a stay at home mom….. two little ones. Only time I didn’t work. For the entire Luke and Laura story. I never missed a day.
There is nothing “woke” about suddenly believing rape is wrong. 🙄🙄 It was illegal then and it’s illegal now.
What’s disgusting is that Laura fell in love with her rapist. What message does that send?
That it's a tv show and you're not supposed to get morals for living from it.
@@dawnvalentine74 You don’t know much about the history of soap operas, do you? As a matter of fact, one of the primary reasons the soaps were created was to do just that--teach moral lessons. The other primary reason was to sell household products.
@@paulvoorhies8821TV shows do one thing well: they deliver a market or target audience to an advertiser. You read too much into it.
