On "Anything BMW" this is without doubt the best channel out there. Content, subject matter, editing and delivery is as good as anything on TV. you are to be commended.
Mitutoyo is a Perfect Brand. One hint: hold it on the plastic part for not heating the tool up with your hands. In Thais way you have the perfect measurement.
What an exciting project! As always, you set the standard for doing things properly. Thanks to you I became picky when wrenching on my own - and that cost me quite a bit.
Despite of bearing material the biggest factor in the wear of bearings is the oil clearance, it must be pretty tight from the factory to allow any sort of crank to bearing contact because ideally you’d never have any metal to metal contact since you can’t compress a liquid and the thin film of oil is there to prevent that. In operation and under stress interesting things do happen. The idea of the front of the crank getting pulled up by tension in the timing chains makes sense since you’re taught not to over tighten accessory belts for the same reason.
Awesome video again. Really looking forward to this build. Good to hear Evolve are supplying you too. And yes, that is what it’s like to work on a UK car. Thankfully, there’s a lot of underbody protection panels on the E9Xs which helps a bit.
Your work is absolutely outstanding, the attention to detail and everything is absolutely unbelievable. I can't wait to see you take this on a test drive and everything!! And is it too early to ask when the new video is coming out??
Loving the enthusiasm!! The s65 with the carbon plenum/intake has the best sound ever!! It's like a CSL X 10 !!!!! Can't wait to see and hear this beast when it's ready!!!
In the middle of the video I started to write a comment related to using new piston rings and honing the cylinder surface, then told myself to stop and watch till the end. Holy sh*t I just got the most comprehensive answer in my life. This is the next level of satisfaction. Love what ya showing us!
Sreten don t mess around get yourself one of the Volkswagen VAS 6095 engine stands BMW used them also. They were made by Bosch they are the best ones what you can get for your money. Sometimes one of these shows up on Kleinanzeigen
Amazing how you guys dismantle an engine and assemble it all the way over and remember where everything goes and the exact place of the parts...There's thousands of parts there...Really amazing
Another awesome video Sreten. What would be good to see is how you organise nuts, bolts and components during the process of taking an engine or a car apart. I struggle sometimes with this and would love to get some tips.
Nice video. Not sure if they sell “Simple Green” cleaner in Germany. I use that to soak pistons that are covered in carbon. After 24 hrs you can clean them with a soft tooth brush and they look like new. It will also remove the brown staining on engine parts from the oil deposits.
Also, if you sell donor car as is plus whole rotating assembly you could pobably finance stroker kit 🔥 kits available from factory 4.4 up to 4.7l for 9k USD. Includes crankshaft, rods and pistons with pins and rings so everything. BTW also don't forget to replace secondary air injection valves (there two at the back side of heads). They are not that expensive, they do tend to fail (one of mine just did) and they are absolutely awful to replace with engine in the car. And last but not least. S65 had 3 issues. Conrods bearings and main bearings as you already know but also the clearance between conrods is smaller that standard and sometimes under load (when they swell from heat) they can make contact. I don't remember what the official clearance range was, you can Google it or ping me of you won't be able to find it
At 45:17 you should only hold the micrometer on the black part of the meter. Holding on to the other parts of the meter will heat it up and could alter your readings ever so slightly. Especially with these tiny, tiny margins this could make a difference.
Hey Serten you know if you use the lower seat cushion from the E93 on to your E92 you would officially have Euro OE M3 seats. Which the US spec did not get :(
Piston rings need to be specific for the S65 engine because of the cylinder sleeve coating from the factory. If you use non oem piston rings the engine will have massive blow by, consume large amounts of oil and smoke out the tailpipe like crazy. This was all learned via Steve Dinan. 👍🏼
It's an AluSil block, there is no such thing as cylinder sleeve coating. AluSil stands for Aluminium-silicon, and there is a special honing/etching process that exposes silicon in the cylinder bores, on which piston rings ride on, as Aluminium itself is too weak and rings would eat up the bores quickly. It is a common misconception that AluSil is a coating, but it's not. As long as you use piston rings meant for AluSil, there will be no issues. :)
@@M539Restorations Correct. I couldn’t remember the name of the material the block was made of but the OEM rings work best on the Alusil. I’ve seen two s65 builds where they tried using aftermarket rings and both engines had massive blow by. I don’t know if there’s a specific coating on the rings for the alusil or the profile of the rings that keep them sealed against the alusil. Anyways can’t wait to see the finished product Broski.
Every youtuber jumps for joy when they get offered free loot. But what surprises me the most is the M539 community. There are people *WHO OFFER* to sort you out with expensive parts, skills and expertise *FOR NOTHING - EVERYTHING TOTALLY FREE OF CHARGE* but you still insist on paying them anyway. I have always noticed this about you... No matter how expensive a project is. If you can pay for something. You will. The respect you have for the M539 community is absolutely awesome! One of the best down to earth content creators on the platform!
Thanks again for your work - always enjoyable and really looking forward to the next steps. Just a comment - the thrust and non-thrust sides in the cylinder are 180 deg opposite each other. Not 90 deg. (Maybe I misunderstood when you pointed in the block…)
This was the most satisfying s65 engine build video, hats off man u made it alone this complete tear down on your own, u really owe a salute man , working on same s65 really this gave me a extremely helpful for everything
Fantastic episode as always. I’ve been holding my breath all year waiting for this series. I got myself an E92 M3 and am a very happy driver. I’ll happily let you borrow it if you ever plan another U.S. trip. Love your work ethic.
when i was rebuilding my m52. i read that if you want to reuse the old piston rings then you don't hone the cylinders. but if you get new piston rings then you really want to hone the cylinders so the new rings can get bedded in properly

Yes, I guess I didn't explain correctly, I meant 90° angle from the point I was showing.
Its like watching a surgeon . lovely work

Fantastic episode as always. I’ve been holding my breath all year waiting for this series.
I got myself an E92 M3 and am a very happy driver.
I’ll happily let you borrow it if you ever plan another U.S. trip.
Love your work ethic.
never pressed a notif so quick, I was literally thinking about you like 20 mins ago
Thanks my brother, what an amazing work
Shrick cams, Mahle comp pistons, hoooooh boy!!!! Project Frankfurt is gonna be spicy!
Great stuff, nicely done! Enjoyed your analysis of the bearing issue, nice work!
It took me three days to watch the video, but as always it was worth it.
when i was rebuilding my m52. i read that if you want to reuse the old piston rings then you don't hone the cylinders. but if you get new piston rings then you really want to hone the cylinders so the new rings can get bedded in properly
