This is one of my favorite Ren songs too. I think your analysis was spot on. Chinchilla is a powerhouse in her own right. She duets with Ren on How to be Me (live) and once again, they sing beautifully together. She's also independent so please consider checking out some of her solo work.
This song always reminds that one of the (many) things that makes Ren so great is his ability to know exactly when to be complex, keep it simple, or even use silence to get his message across. He isn’t flexing his guitar skills in this, just playing exactly what is needed with that beautiful guitar tone. It is an older song from before he finally got diagnosed correctly and was written after a breakdown following multiple emergency trips to the hospital. It is heart wrenching but so so beautiful. You'll find all the Ren friends he collaborates with are super talented - I'd definitely urge you to go down the Chinchilla branch of the rabbit hole as she has some brilliant solo stuff. She has also done a couple of busking duets with Ren which I'd highly recommend you looking at. They call each other musical siblings and for good reason - the chemistry between them is ridiculous and it feels like they know hat each other is thinking.
For me the Chalk Outline is the “bubble” you’re in, the cottonwool cloud you’re in (& that your brain is wrapped in) when you’re on antidepressants. Everything is distant, you’re sort of protected from the pain...except you’re not. But the fear of the pain rushing back keeps you taking it, “just in case”. It’s a potentially eternal vicious circle. I was on Prozac for 13 years, until one day I wonder who the f*ck I was? And what did I really think, or feel, about anything? I didn’t know. So I weaned myself off them, took a month or three, and it was scary, but that was 20 years ago, a couple of minor brushes with depression since, but no black, black tunnels, and no cloudy, cottonwool filled chalk outlines, and for that I’m grateful. I f*cking love this song, and REN & Chinchilla are outstanding musicians! Thank you again, love from Annie, in Cornwall, UK🙂🌸

Yes, and since it's so much more than a song/music video (I'm just... I 100% put Hi Ren to the side as an absolute masterpiece of performance of the human experience, worth *re-watching* over & over & over, but I don't ever count it against full-on *music* masterpieces like Chalk Outlines that I'm gonna *listen* to even without a video (maybe even on a playlist that isn't all Ren), over & over & over. Most of them are great and a couple of dozen are bona fide masterpieces! There's so much goodness, that it's really impossible to say which is his best. Chinchilla solo: "Fingers" and "Little Girl Gone" both empowering and incredible songs. Ren and Chinchilla: "How to be me" Ren solo: "Patience", "Bitter Sweet Symphony", "Genesis", "Love Music" parts 1-4, "Lost All Faith", and then one the new part of "Money Game" drops there's going to be 3 parts there. Then there's his busking band, "The Big Push," to check out.
The volume was perfect! Ren and Chinchilla are amazing in everything they've done together - How to Be Me is one of my favorites. I also love Chinchilla's solo stuff. If you want to hear some of that, I would recommend Fingers live. For a change of pace, you might want to watch Ren and Sam Thompkins do Blind Eyed. There are multiple versions, but I would personally recommend starting with the MC Sessions version, and then be sure to watch the version featuring the Angry Car Park Attendant!

How to be me live with Chinchilla is heartbreakingly beautiful. I'm on sertraline (zoloft) for the second time. I've been on almost every antidepressant, ssri,snri, even old school tricyclic antidepressants. The ones that work properly (and it's a freaking kaleidoscope Rollercoaster to fund the right med and dose and/or combo) it's only good for a time before your brain adjusts for it and you start to build that wall. You don't even notice until, one day something happens that you KNOW should have elicited a certain reaction... but you can't feel the connection to your own emotions anymore. I had already seen some of the antidepressant roulette and i wasn't eager to play again, so i tried to hide it. Till i realized that my son (who was around 4 at the time) was more important than my obstinate pride. But that "chalk outline" is awful. You don't feel human, but you keep taking the meds because you know that if you stop... everything gets harder and hurts more and your brain overloads. Plus... this is the devil you know. Being "ok" is a scary, terrifying unknown. And what if you do climb up to the top of that hole and you can look out at ok and you start to feel it... then you slip. The higher or more ok you get, the more it hurts when you fuck it all up again. That's the mindset i feel when i hear that line. It's a punch in the gut because it's an avoidance tactic that i battle with everyday. Not the meds, i really do need them, but doing everything exactly as i always do even when it's unhealthy. Because I'm scared to be ok. Like Ren said, all things change. Except maybe me lol. But even I'm getting a bit higher up that hole. It's absolutely terrifying. 💜

Anyways, it reminded me of when I started on my own Ren journey and when I first listened to the song and I remember thinking, man, this is fantastic, I love this. This has got to be the best song he's written. Then my journey continued and I heard, 'How To Be Me' and that one put Chalk in the shade. So man, ima go sit here and watch you make take the same journey and when you finally get to the aforementioned song, I will smile again as your jaw drops and you replace favorite after favourite. That my friend, is what's called, "The Ren effect ". Keep creating, keep positive but most of all, keep smiling 😊

If you're old enough to remember that "Islands in the Stream" era when Kenny and Dolly did that TV special, you know what I am talking about. The nails threw me too, until I learned that they are part of her process to become Chinchilla. She has said that she is naturally introverted and shy so putting on the nails and getting into character helps her become the vocal powerhouse that we are blessed with. More Chinchilla. How to be me live with Chinchilla is heartbreakingly beautiful.
I'm on sertraline (zoloft) for the second time. I've been on almost every antidepressant, ssri,snri, even old school tricyclic antidepressants. The ones that work properly (and it's a freaking kaleidoscope Rollercoaster to fund the right med and dose and/or combo) it's only good for a time before your brain adjusts for it and you start to build that wall. You don't even notice until, one day something happens that you KNOW should have elicited a certain reaction... but you can't feel the connection to your own emotions anymore.
I had already seen some of the antidepressant roulette and i wasn't eager to play again, so i tried to hide it. Till i realized that my son (who was around 4 at the time) was more important than my obstinate pride.
But that "chalk outline" is awful. You don't feel human, but you keep taking the meds because you know that if you stop... everything gets harder and hurts more and your brain overloads.
Plus... this is the devil you know. Being "ok" is a scary, terrifying unknown. And what if you do climb up to the top of that hole and you can look out at ok and you start to feel it... then you slip. The higher or more ok you get, the more it hurts when you fuck it all up again.
That's the mindset i feel when i hear that line. It's a punch in the gut because it's an avoidance tactic that i battle with everyday. Not the meds, i really do need them, but doing everything exactly as i always do even when it's unhealthy. Because I'm scared to be ok. Like Ren said, all things change. Except maybe me lol.
But even I'm getting a bit higher up that hole. It's absolutely terrifying. 💜

Anyways, it reminded me of when I started on my own Ren journey and when I first listened to the song and I remember thinking, man, this is fantastic, I love this. This has got to be the best song he's written. Then my journey continued and I heard, 'How To Be Me' and that one put Chalk in the shade. So man, ima go sit here and watch you make take the same journey and when you finally get to the aforementioned song, I will smile again as your jaw drops and you replace favorite after favourite. That my friend, is what's called, "The Ren effect ". Keep creating, keep positive but most of all, keep smiling 😊
Ren and Chinchilla give me "Modern Day Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers" kinda vibes. If you're old enough to remember that "Islands in the Stream" era when Kenny and Dolly did that TV special, you know what I am talking about. Good friends who had great chemistry and were so magical performing together that everyone "shipped them", as the kids say, even though they were never in a romantic relationship. ❤

The nails threw me too, until I learned that they are part of her process to become Chinchilla. She has said that she is naturally introverted and shy so putting on the nails and getting into character helps her become the vocal powerhouse that we are blessed with. More Chinchilla. Watch her take no bullshit and kick all the ass. Bonus: her videos are so f*cking fun and absolutely an original experience.
