huge tip for antone doing this. The 3 nuts for the catalytic converter flange. Find washers made by a company called NORDLOCK mercedes benz uses these on there exhaust manifolds and they work perfect. two washers make 1 washer. The 2 washers are ramped and from the high heat and expansion will keep the exhaust from leaking also should never have to retighten nut. I used them on flange and manifold at 100k miles and had 350k when a big rig wrecked it. Never had a single problem. It did take 2 attempts without the washers and was the reason to seek out the answer.
My 2014 Equinox started sounding louder than normal 2 weeks ago. When I bought it it was quiet but there’s some noise now. A mechanic friend of mine told me it’s the gasket that’s leaking and watching this video makes me a little worried. I can buy the part, and I have screwdrivers, sockets, wrenches, ratchets, etc… but if I need to take off a bolt at an angle I’ll be screwed. I just don’t have the money to pay for labor.. Did u have all the tools that he used in the video when u changed your manifold?
@@Snowman10168 yeah, I had all the tools. Basically a good set of sockets and wrenches is all you really need. The only thing that slowed me down was that the manifold was on the back of the motor. Kinda uncomfortable to get into.
@@jerbear1978 I’m making plans for next weekend, I’m gonna get home at 3pm and I’ll start working on it from sunset till however long it takes. Everything should be cooled off just fine. Also did u spray the manifold bolts with penetrating oil or u didn’t need to?
Much better video than most mechanics on this one. I'd like to buy you a beer. I"m a Former GM Mechanic and instructor. Who was the manufacture of the new defective Gasket you used? I just did an alt. in my 07 Saturn Vue, and had to do it twice as I first bought a reman. Autozone one / Defective. it was a miserable job, expecially haveing to do it twice. Now I have to do this same manifold on a 2013 Equinox. Also has 2 other recalls, includeing class action law suit on engine for defective rings, burning 1 qt every 1000 miles. So I went to thicker oil and added Muscle MT-10 now it burns 75% less. Also had defective struts for this year. Defective wiper motor. Computer screen : Defective- goes off and on. Defective trans. control module. I hope you didn't have anyone asking you how many ft. lbs are 124 in. Lbs? Now I know why I tell my friends and family now to buy Toyotas.

What would you guys say is a good price for a mechanic to do this job these days? I'm handy, but this is a lot of screwing around and I can't afford to have a screw up and be without a vehicle for any length of time. TIA
I had to replace mine twice. A LOT OF ENGINE. Not worth a hoot. I WISH I could get my money back. Had nothing but trouble out of mine . PEOPLE DO NOT BUY A CHEV. EQUINOX.😅😢
thanks for the video. I am doing mine this weekend but I know why there is the new O2. On my 2013 there was a recall around April 2021 for a new catalytic converter and both O2 sensors (yes on a car with 150k+ and 9 years old) so my guess is CA had something to do with it. The dealership saw a small crack in mine but wanted $900 to replace. Hope it sounds better after and that the new gasket works!
I did. I ended up buying a new o2 sensor since I couldn’t get it to budge. I think he references the bolt sizes. It’s just the bolts and then if you do a new o2 you will need that special socket as well that the auto parts store sells. Time and busted knuckles and a sore stomach from leaning over the engine. I did have an issue where the o-ring popped out and I crushed it when tightening down so just make sure that is flush. I did have to loose the bolt under to drop the exhaust a bit to get the manifold out and in. Once you figure out how to twist it out you are good. Did all that and then jumped the chain a month later and off to salvage it went.
@@gregsmith8047 My chain also but I caught it in time. $600 to replace what are plastic guides for the chain. Seriously! Hard Plastic guides ? Now the Manifold. Also want $800 for this job . I think I will do it. Hell If I cant Ill have it towed to the garage.
Big hole there for the wire to go through, but on another Vid I watched he took it off in the car. This one was cross threaded and would prob have been a bitch to do.
I'm not a mechanic but I'm confused when you say you're cheating. Was that because you're using a drill to extract the bolts or is there something else going on that I don't know?
I have a broken stud in the cylinder head. Will I be ok with a new exhaust manifold. The shop said the stud is cross threaded so they have to take the whole head off. I'm not doing that. So will I be ok will 1 broken stud in the head
Mine was P0420 code - Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 1) Cracked in the same location. Poor engineering by GM. Exhaust manifolds should never crack under normal use.
@mjkirk12 damn, im pretty sure i got the same issue in my 2012 equinox. I didnt look to find my exhaust leak yet, but i do have that p0420 though, also p0171 and low voltage on o2 sensor bank 1 sensor 2. I can def hear the leak close to the engine, i was hoping i mgihtve only been the manifold gasket rustting away, but goddamn POS!!!
Oxygen sensor malfunctions and calls for way to much fuel which gets dumped into manifold on cold starts. Add freezing temperatures and impatient normies throwing the car into drive in under a minute upon startup X a few dozen or hundred times and you have a nice 800 dollar service charge :)
A lot of these cars are having cracks in their manifolds. What;s going on? Cheap OEM parts? A local garage told me the exhaust manifolds on Ford trucks, since 2010, are disintegrating. Their made in China from recycled metals,

Also, loosening the bolt under the vehicle is a must. You won't have enough movement for when you go to put the new one on.

Did you re-use the locking nuts that connect the manifold to the head? If so, do you know the size and if they carry then at local parts stores?
How much would that usually cost to fix at a shop?

What year equinox is it ? I think mine has the same problem air is surging from back the engine when driving about to diagnose later this week
what would cause equinox to smell like paint after installing new manifold gaskets and o2 sensor

I wondering the same exact thing
is this fwd or awd? there is a big difference, fwd should only be 1.5 hour job while awd is 6 hour job,

How the hell did you take off the heat shield without taking out the O2 sensor?

The customer probably replaced the sensor with a 02 socket and didn’t need to remove the heat shield to view his or hers 2 piece manifold.

For removing them, you can't beat a 24" pipe wrench.

like putting on a tire. Inner bolts first. Then the outer. There are 10 all together.
