This song has a magic all of it's own. Up till now I thought Bing's version was the definitive one. But Gordon Macrae for me tops it and brought tears to my eyes.
Fantastic, moving video: The song, the singer, and the "The Bells of St. Mary's" film background. BTW, Bing's version is the definitive one, bar none. MacRae's version is different, equally great in so many ways.
It is a beautiful version, Jim! I watched the movie last night, and had to put this together today. Yes, Ms. Bergman was fabulous, as always. I'm so glad you enjoyed this! Thanks so much for your wonderful comments, my friend, they made my day :))
Further to my previous post I've been listening to this recording a few more times. The light and shade in his voice is truly awe inspiring, the way he uses his voice as a finely tuned instrument and softens it on the line "the young love the true love" is so moving. Actually I'm rather jealous of him as he worked so often with two of my favourite girl friends-not that they knew they were my girl friends-I mean of course Doris Day and Jo Stafford, two peerless artists.
Ah well maybe we'll meet them both somewhere along the 4th dimension and we can double date. With full acceptance from relevant husbands and wives of course-his, hers, mine, and if applicable yours.
I think I listened a short time ago to a different recording of this song by Mr. MacRae that I did not like nearly as much as this one, which was lovely, and featured him in fine voice. Thank you for posting this.
This was my mother's favorite song. We had it sung at our weddings.Love and miss you, mother
I love this song. It was my college Alma Mater with altered lyrics
My friend is a tenor, he will be singing this song at Mass Sunday week it will be a huge treat for the congregation.
MacRae's voice is a deeper Bing Crosby voice. Both very beautiful .... Forties, fifties.....those were the golden decades.
As beautiful as his voice might be, I still prefer the Bing Crosby version.
I loved Gordon Macrae

Fabulous description of how he sings this. Ha! Yes, I'm a big Jo Stafford fan, and am jealous of her getting to work with him so much :))

Ha! Love it, I'm all for it, Alan! Not applicable for me, so I'm ready whenever :))
Anyone who doesn't like this rendition is from another planet.
