- We start as Matilda of Tuscany in 1066 and use her pious reputation to conquer and reform Rome, reclaiming its glory as the center of Christendom.
Matilda of Tuscany is one of the most fascinating historical figures of the Middle Ages. Known as "The Great Countess," she begins the game as a powerful duchess in Northern Italy. Despite her relatively small domain compared to her neighbors, Matilda’s starting position offers a unique combination of political power, military potential, and religious influence, making her a fantastic character for ambitious players who dream of shaping history.
The challenge begins in 1066, a tumultuous time for the Holy Roman Empire, of which Tuscany is a vassal. While Matilda starts as a devout Catholic ruler, her high Piety and close relationship with the Pope create opportunities for rapid expansion using claims granted by the church. Throughout this campaign, we take advantage of Matilda’s extraordinary reputation to forge a destiny no one could have predicted: the reclamation of Rome itself.
One of the keys to success in this playthrough is leveraging Matilda’s strengths. She is an intelligent, charismatic, and pious ruler with traits that encourage loyalty among vassals and generate significant Piety over time. By prioritizing diplomacy and stewardship early on, Matilda stabilizes her realm and builds a foundation for larger conquests. Meanwhile, her commitment to faith ensures that the Pope becomes a reliable ally, granting claims on strategic territories that will ultimately form the backbone of a new Roman Empire.
The road to reforming Rome is not without challenges. Early in the playthrough, Matilda faces the dual pressures of managing her position within the Holy Roman Empire and contending with the ambitions of rival nobles. Careful marriage alliances, shrewd political maneuvering, and military strategy are essential to surviving the turbulent early years. Once Matilda consolidates her control over Tuscany, she sets her sights on Rome itself, a prize of immense religious and symbolic significance.
As the campaign progresses, Matilda’s role as a pious reformer becomes even more apparent. Her faith-driven conquests are bolstered by her ability to call upon Holy Orders, negotiate with the Pope, and gather support from like-minded rulers across Christendom. Capturing Rome is the first major milestone, marking the beginning of a new era for her dynasty. But reforming Rome is about more than just controlling the city-it’s about reshaping the very fabric of the Catholic Church and reestablishing the glory of the Roman Empire under a new vision of leadership.
This playthrough also explores the fascinating mechanics of religious reformation in Crusader Kings 3. Reforming Rome requires not only territorial control but also a deep understanding of the faith mechanics in the game. By amassing Piety and navigating the intricacies of the Catholic Church, Matilda initiates a series of reforms that reshape the religious landscape of Europe. The process involves tough decisions, balancing tradition with innovation as Matilda crafts a legacy that will endure for centuries.
One of the most satisfying aspects of this campaign is seeing how the reclamation of Rome transforms Matilda’s dynasty. Her heirs inherit not only her titles but also her vision for a reformed and revitalized Christendom. The playthrough showcases the power of legacy in Crusader Kings 3, as the decisions made by one ruler ripple across generations, shaping the fate of an entire empire.
From the challenges of uniting Italy to the triumph of reclaiming the Eternal City, this playthrough captures the spirit of medieval strategy at its finest. Matilda’s rise from duchess to reformer of Rome is a testament to the power of vision, faith, and perseverance. Join us as we embark on this epic journey to reshape history and leave an indelible mark on the world of Crusader Kings 3.
This is a story of ambition, faith, and legacy-a journey to reclaim Rome and reform it for a new era. Let’s see how Matilda of Tuscany turns her pious reputation into a force that changes the course of history forever.
"We can trust him".
Bohemond, the arbitrary, ambitious, deceitful, treacherous atheist.
By far the most trustworthy person to entrust 60% of an empire to for sure.
Matilda: "I have to marry this shithead. Fair enough. Now to the dungeons. And what was that you said a swear word to our lord and savior? Off with his head. Oh my goodness, my husband just died, but it is because he broke one of the commandments of God. So I cannot be at fault for that, right?"
Pope: "No, dear duchess, you did nothing wrong."
She said she wanted to go into the dungeon with him - unfortunately it was a real dungeon.
discovered your channel not too long ago, best ck3 channel, don't stop uploading!
absolute mad man, I would've been crying with stress with all those factions
Hail Empress Matilda the Conqueror, Caesara Augusta
Interesting there is actually is an Empress Matilda, although we know her as Maude in English history.
As someone who likes to perfectly micro manage their vassals into rightful de jure territories and cultures. This was painful to watch lol.
Sometimes the best way to play is to not stressed about all of that stuff, I do the same stuff you do but ended up quitting most play through because it got too stressful lmao
The only way to hold such a empire together is doing feasts regularly, doing the obvious grand tours and creating a hook on the strongest of them.
Also you either have to change into a republic or create kingdoms which have only split inheritance.
I did this like 1 and a half year ago but i only pressed the roman empire button until i got every province of the roman empire on its hight it was crazy
19:08 You spoke like a true ruler.
That was both fun and painful to watch, as speedrunning conquests is kinda unsettling (for me). Good job, man.

Nah. The best start is Temujin to play as Genghis Khan!
This is a video, my friend, and I can't wait to see more of the excellent content. Keep up the fantastic work, and no matter what happens or what anybody says, never give up and always remember you are worthy of respect and recognition; I really mean it. I watched France conquering India, and it was an excellent video. I like seeing more of that content! I have an idea for a future video: What if England had been taken over by a young Warrior King not from France but from India and set his sights on unifying the British Isles under one banner? What if Britannia had Samrat? What do you think of that idea, Mr. Wazlos? Any thoughts, comments, and opinions about this idea?
