      A lot of people care more about the appearance of the card than about performance analysis because they want to match the colours with their sleeved cables, LEDs and water loops. To each his own I guess.

      Yep, love the fact he mentions the drivers being used and why the newer one wasnt used, other "reviewers" just throw in some old results and compare it with a "new" card and they call it a day, then they get upset when people start to call them biased and such...

      It's crazy the depth that this channel goes into, It's one of the only channels that can appeal to the average user while giving more than enough information for the advanced overclocker. Also something needs to be said about the no bs approach, it is all facts in your face with no bias, I love it.

    Added some annotations. The specifications table should read 1303MHz for the MSI Gaming X and 1120-1266MHz for the Reference card. Obviously switched those up. Thanks for letting us know! Lots of charts... so... many... charts.

      hey man, can you do a video on the benefits of the number of cores and its relation to performance?
      It seems like Nvidia has nailed the correct amount of cores in the 1060 but it seems like AMD went with to many cores and a lower clock rate comparatively. It seems like only a few games support this many cores but that would also mean when games adapt directx 12 and vulkan in the future these RX 480s will get more of a performance gain then the 1060 because they use all their cores fully now.
      That might be something to test/look into and ultimately explain in a video. Seems very important, like understanding that its not about the CPU's clock speed but the IPC and the clock combined. Since you get IPC improvements with architecture upgrades.

    Good review.. I chose rx480 over 1060.. because of FreeSync support and Crossfire support (if I decide to pick another one down the line). 1060 G-sync monitors are too expensive.

      Same here. I mostly play Overwatch, which does get better FPS on the 1060, but I think Freesync will be more than worth it, and I think 100FPS on epic will be plenty for me coming from low settings 75% resolution scaling 50-60fps

    Why does BlackOps3 get called AMD biased, but GTAV which favors Nvidia more than most titles (nearly as bad as Pcars) is treated as the norm? I mean, a 970 is nowhere near a FuryX in most games or on paper, and yet it gets awfully close in GTAV, and in some reviews even beats it..
    Other than that another fantastic vid from you guys, you're really up there with the best of them afaic. As far as UA-cam goes you guys are easily one of the best, you put most of the big channels to shame. Hope you get a load more subs in the near future.

    Why do the games that work well on amd cards, have really good optimization. Like black ops and hitman, which reach pretty high fps on lower end hardware but in general work better on amd also. This isn't a conspiracy theory just an observation.

    • @AloofObserver
      @AloofObserver 8 років тому +25

      AMD cards are generally more powerful at the purely hardware level, if you can fully utilize that power then you can get very good results.

      -T-X-M- Lay the blame at the feet of the developers who are lazy and use Gameworks. Nvidia isn't forcing them; if we want this to change, we as consumers need to complain to the devs who use it.

    Hey GN, one piece of advice if I may. When you reference other videos you've put out, I would recommend linking them in the description and/or annotations (I view you primarily on mobile, so I don't see annotations) rather than simply saying "search the channel." Eliminates possible confusion over finding the right video and improves your viewers' experience.

      Aha. Yeah, UA-cam's annotations are in need of a facelift. We try to use "cards" to link related stuff, but don't always hit it. Will try to do this more diligently in the future.

    Minor nitpick: the reference card MSRP is $239, not $249. This just means the MSI card costs $25 more than the reference card, not $15.

    • @GamersNexus
      @GamersNexus  8 років тому

      The only in-stock ones that I found at time of filming were $250, but that should change as stock refills everywhere.

    • @Pastechi
      @Pastechi 8 років тому

      I do not understand why people think every aftermarket cards needs to be 239.99
      They all say that the msrp "Starts at 239.99" and not "All of them are 239.99".
      Would you expect a hybrid rx480 to cost 239.99 as well if it gets released?

    • @treowayne
      @treowayne 8 років тому

      +Pastechi I didn't say that was my expectation. I just hope that the extra money for an AIB card delivers on a price to performance basis. This ratio can only be calculated when accurate price and performance data are used.
      I think it's reasonable to spend ten percent extra in order to get ten percent extra performance. I don't think it's reasonable to spend ten percent extra for three percent extra performance.
      This particular card seems to represent a decent value proposition compared to the reference card because it delivers extra performance, better thermals, reduced noise, and no PCIe power draw concerns.
      it must be noted that several of these advantages come by default, because the reference design is so poor.

    • @Pastechi
      @Pastechi 8 років тому

      Wayne Manion I agree with you BUT...let me take an example.
      The GTX 1080's.
      MSRP starts at 599.99
      We got the ASUS Turbo and the MSI Aero going for 609.99. 10dollars more than the msrp pricerange is still pretty good for me. But what you get is the same thing as the founders edition that costs 699.99
      Then you will get the msi gaming that has a better (or WAY BETTER) cooling solutions and higher clocks and ofcourse they are not gonna sell it for 599.99 .
      Same thing goes for the Radeon's
      8gb msrp is 239.99 but the msi gaming has a way better cooling solution on it than the reference card.
      Now if we are talking about not having much performance difference to get more FPS then well i say from 239.99 to 250 is still a good deal because the cooling solution that MSI have on the card is still worth it.
      For a 1080 u can get an msi gaming X 1080 for the same price as the 1080 founders edition(699.99) but performs better than the founders and also has plenty of room for overclocking.
      But you can also get an asus strix 1080 with similar performance than the msi gaming x 1080 but for only 649.99.
      It all depends how much the aftermarket brands wants to sell their products.
      If the MSI RX480 is really worth 250dollars then i say its a good deal because looking at it i think it should be worth more.

It is going to replace my old R9 270x, which still holds its weight for its age, but hey, it was time for an upgrade. This card is da fucking bomb! :D Super silent and great temps even better than my msi gtx 970 gaming 4G under idle and load. Card never reached 65 degree under full load after hours with fanspeed at 50 % and that with an oc like 1350/2200 stable without touching any other settings. Bought the Gaming X 8G for 250 euro at mediamarkt - amazing price for such a good card :)
    Did not regret switching to team red.

    • @s0ad29
      @s0ad29 7 років тому

      No its the 8gb version, i would not recommend the 4gb version for future coming games, very high and ultra texture settings do love lots of gb's :). I would buy the MSI 480 Gaming X 8G since it is one of the cheapest ones atm and it also has the best cooling solution and lowest fan noise. I can't hear mine at 45 % fanspeed and it always stays within 65 degrees.

    • @s0ad29

      Both are excellent choices, i would go with the MSI (personally) because i have never owned a xfx card although i'm sure it's a good card. If you want to OC the GTR would probadly be the best choice since it has one of the best custom pcb and MSI has the best cooling solution.

    First, I just wanted to say that I've been hooked on your videos recently. Just solid in depth explanations and reviews. Second, Titanfall is my spirit animal and I know I will be playing Titanfall 2 a bunch. Would I be better off with the 480 or 1060? I know Titanfall 1 was nVidia optimized but I seriously refuse to pay the price for a g-sync monitor. Which is turn has me weighing the 480 heavily. I guess if I'm only losing a handful of frames depending on the game the 480 seems like the better buy.

    I do want to say that as of December 2016, AMD has released extensive driver updates and boosted performance by an average of around 10% in DX11 and 6-8% in DX12 and Vulkan. To anyone watching this and wondering what the 480 benches at in certain games now, take the FPS from these videos from the summer and multiply by about 1.1. That should be close to what the card gets in December of 2016.

      and likewise the 480 kicks the 1060's ass in all but 1 of the low level API games out now, (the odd one out being tombraider, which is stuffed with gameworks tech)

    May I convey some critiuqe; though I really like your method of testing and the your very analyctical approach to testing, I would suggest that you 1. Talk slower and more clear, for me you are mumbling somewhat and sometimes talking very fast. 2. Talk less. For me you are "over"-talking. Convey the message more concise and try and get the message through with less amount of words.
    I'm not a native english speaker, though I obviously do understand english perfectly, so my critique could be due to that. Take it or leave it.
    I do like your videos otherwise I would be here bitching at all so keep up the good work.

    for nvidia's sake, I hope that pascal was a turbocharged maxwell because volta is going to bring on hardware level asynchronous compute. if they don't, amd looks to be back in the swing of things provided they figure out how to push out drivers without issue. I haven't seen these guys complain about new nvidia drivers causing issue. I personally haven't

      That's a reason for picking a RX 480. For the GTX 1060 it is the lower power consumption. So indeed it depends on your own preferences.
      "future proof" for an AMD card doesn't matter - at least for me, since most gamers change their GPU every two or three years.

    The way I see it:
    GTX 1060 - Better here and now in the majority (though not all) DX11 titles, especially with regards to tight, consistent frame times. Much cooler & quieter with significantly higher clocks.
    RX 480 - Showing more promise for the DX12 & Vulkan games of tomorrow. If you want to spend GTX 1060 prices, you'll get an extra 2GB of VRAM over that card, or you can skimp if you think you'll be okay with 4GB. All in all, looking to be a more future proof option depending on how long you plan on keeping it.

      Yeah the fact that Nvidia has locked SLI support for the 1060 really closed the deal for me. It's almost like Nvidia is scared that had the 1060 been SLI ready it would beat or compete with their more expensive cards for less money. Nvidia is just greedy while AMD does all the innovation.

    Great video! Man, the RX480 is still my choice due to Freesync capability (I'll take that with a 4gb model over a more expensive 1060 and non-sync panel.) The AIB situation is just a fiasco though, I just don't know what other way to put it. The 1060 cards are pretty much all out, yet there are only 2 AIB RX480s on Newegg right now (both out of stock), over a month after launch. To add to that, the Sapphire Nitro looks like a disappointment.
    XFX and Gigabyte need to hurry up and come out with some great all black cards

    @Gamer Nexus nice review. I was wondering since I saw people discuss this on a lot of forums.. some people that own both AMD and NVIDIA GPU claim that the AMD GPU has better colour reproduction in scenes with a lot of vibrant colours and apparently it has better blacks? Would you mind to look at this? I wonder how much of this is true.

    • @WereCatStudio
      @WereCatStudio 8 років тому

      Bogdan Staicu You are wrong. Look 2-3 years back at the NVIDIA issue with HDMI. It was fixed by driver since then but there was a huge color reproduction error that was present for quite a long time before they fixed it. And besides, NVIDIA renders image differently than AMD so it may do a lot with differences in image quality even if not very noticable at first glance.

    Of those cards you haven't reviewed yet (such as ASUS), is it because you don't have them or what?
    I'm really interested in what they've been able to achieve with these new chips.
    Basically until ALL the various cards have been put thru their paces can anyone truly make an informed choice.
    And there's still the 'problem' of retailers gouging consumers because of the debacle of retail card availability.

    That was a truly great review, thanks for that. Only one comment about the conclusion. Although you repeated some information a couple times, each time left out was at least one of the compelling reasons and or aspects to consider. First the sound which seemed to be such an issue to warrant it's own video would likely even out to nothing. Assuming the MSI people do like most and apply the exact same cooler as any other Card OEM's, and the fan curves are relatively similar when not profiled. The 480 is less expensive, comes with more VRAM, has CF capability and shows the most promise for more recent current and future games. The 1060 is a fantastic Card which NVIDIA chose to SLI gimp in order that you cannot achieve a near Titan X performance level for close to *5 times* less cost.

    The reference card is $240, not $250. Also. the red devil and the Nitro cards are $10 over the price they quoted they would sell for. I would bet MSI does the same thing. Lowball the price, and then it turns out to be $10 more. So you are paying $35 more at the end of the day.

    While watching UA-cam or Netflix, my MSI RX 480 Gaming X 4GB keeps its memory clock at 1750Mhz while the core clock usually fluctuates a bit.
