    13:13 Closing
This week our Sun steps into high gear. We have multiple glancing solar storm blows along with a pocket of fast solar wind on its way. Aurora photographers at high latitudes should get a nice show, but it may not be enough for mid-latitude photographers. That being said, with active regions 3511 and 3513 showing significant flare activity and lots of filaments on the disk poised to erupt, it is very possible one of these filaments will be destabilized enough to launch into a solar storm towards Earth later this week. Amateur radio operators and GPS users should plan for moderate radio noise and short-lived radio blackouts on the dayside of Earth, up to the R2-level. Chances for R3-level radio blackouts have been increasing slightly over the past few days, but overall, conditions should begin to calm down once region 3511 rotates to the Sun's farside in the next few days. Learn the details of the coming fast solar wind, watch some gorgeous solar storm eye candy and catch up on some stunning aurora photos from the recent G3-level solar storm.

Tamitha - thank you for the update. These reports are fascinating for me in studying the Sun's condition in relation to my Ham Radio usage. All HF frequencies are not born equal! Here in California 40 meters is an important daytime band - at least at this time in the solar cycle. All the lower bands are very sensitive to the Sun's condition.

Hello, Tabitha. Long time. I am a Net Control Station on the Maritime Marine Service Network on 14.300 MHz. The band became really bad last night. The signal level went to S-9 on my receiver meter. Barely anyone was online. It started around 2 P.M. CST until after midnight.

We did have a lot of near M-flares yesterday. That had a lot to do with it, plus afternoon to evening times are pretty bad when it comes to scintillation anyway, due to natural diurnal variations so that just added onto the flare noise. The fact that it lasted until midnight though, that is really crazy. I would have expected the pre and post midnight times to be reasonably calm right now. I will need to go check some data for local disturbances. What geographical region are you in? Knowing a state or city you are near would help me immensely. Thanks for reporting, btw!

In 1859 the aurora was seen in Bucharest at 45 degrees of latitude ... when I read that first I thought the Englishman reporting it was hallucinating because he was homesick, then I found out about the Carrington Event.

8 Aurora in a year. But they still cant discuss the weakness of our shield. Drives me nuts that mainstream look at people trying to tell them what is a very real potential as complete nutters.

What are you talking about? I discuss the dipole component of the Earth's magnetic field changing nearly every time I do a live Q&A. Ive discussed it in depth, in fact, including how aurora around the world is going to change. I also look for reports of equatorial aurora near the SAA for this very reason. I just dont doom and gloom things because it isnt necessary.

We seemed to have a solar flare 24 hours ago , it would have been Saturday Pacific LAX evening ? As a ham radio operator I checked and it was reported. 80 meters was terrible. I know you are paying attention to the Ham Radio audience, I really appreciate that, and I am wondering, how does a flare affect NVIS ? On 80 meters for instance ? I wouldn't think it would affect ground wave radiation, or would it ?

What an interesting forecast! Though it messes with radio reception, it's wonderful to see the sun so rambunctious. It should make for interesting shortwave listening. I'm sure we all agree that the active sun is more interesting than a sleeping sun.
I also wondered why shortwave reception would crater some days. Thanks to our wonderful professor, I now know about shortwave blackouts and their severity.

Another person is connecting auroras with earthquake activity about 3 days later. He's getting quieted, because we don't know how to track earthquakes and he shows that many of them are connected in a few ways that don't look good for the energy sector.
