You could take it up a notch, carefully cut out an opening for a mini slide switch above the USB C slot, mount a small SPST slide switch to the housing and wire it to the split pads. Now no need to open the device, just slide and work the stations.
I soldered in a switch for the traces so I can flip them open/close as needed. Of course, when unplugged.
You made the right choice to dump Windows. Life has been much better for me since I did it. Like anything, there is a learning curve, but it is great to be free from the “you can’t get there from here” fiasco.
I also love the DigiRig. I have several of them. I suggest you mark the ones you modify, so you can keep track of which one goes to which rig. Some CAT controls also need mods. Also, label the cables, because some look too much the same when you are in a hurry.
Oh I've been using Mac for years. My old 2014 Mac just doesn't cut it anymore and I don't want to take my MacBook Pro out in the field.
Windows is a double edged curse. I work with professional radios which use programs written only for Winblows. Can not even use the older MacBooks with dual boot. Incompatibilities with USB to Serial adapter cables where needed.
Great info, Mike. Same problem here with my FT-818 / Surface Go2 combo - had no issues before with my RasPi. Unfortunately, my DigiRig is revision 1.5, so no easy way to enable a built-in attenuator. Eventually, I soldered two resistors inside the mini-DIN plug, which gives me 20dB attenuation. Was a bit tricky, but now I can set the mic level to 40-50, and the waterfall looks great. Thanks a lot for that very valuable hint. 73 Holger DM7XK
I had to do the same with my Digirig for my IC-756 Pro III to connect it to my Macs. The DigiRig folks provided great support when I encountered this issue.
They're good people.
That is not how that kind of per-configured connection is usually shown on a board, it should show the two pads and a small trace connecting them, cut the trace to disconnect. That looks like two separate pads but is in fact one pad with some solder mask printed across the middle
Thanks for sharing Mike
You bet! Now I got my G90 and 818 working with their respective Digirigs with my Mac.
In the ft817/8 menu you can change the output level.,.
Some things you just don't know unless someone brings it to your attention. good info...
I will have to try this with mine. I had the same issue with mine using my 891. I was thinking maby about adding a switch to be able to turn the attenuator on and off without needing to break or solder the connection.
Count me in - love my Digirig as well! Had to break the trace on mine since my D710 has hot audio as well.
Now we just need to get everyone to write Mac apps to upgrade firmware, etc. 😂
I only use a mac and have been able to upgrade firmware and do many things with my rigs. There are a lot of hams using macs and homebrew ports a lot of useful utilities.
I don't have any problems with any apps for Mac. Watch my video on Friday.
There are a ton of tools that are only written for Windows. RM Noise for example, along with all the Icom tools, Winlink, Vara, etc. That said, I use a Mac for everything and hate Windows.
@@Transmissions Winlink Express and RadioMail have Mac ports. (I can do VARA even on my iphone.) There are mac and linux projects for noise reduction using AI, some of which can be downloaded from the App Store. I agree there are some things not on the mac, but I have yet to not be able to do something at all because I use a mac. If the need ever does arise, there is always a Parallels VM, but on my mac I only use that to run linux, minix, and a small OS I wrote in Zig to do some embedded projects.
I am a Yaesu fanboy. I admit it. But I figure why not use the best. 😉🤭
I don't use a MAC!
Wow. Thanks for that. I thought those pads were open by sight. I thought that trace and no glob meant open.
I know, they look that way.
In the world, yes it would be open. I would have preferred he put a 0 ohm resistor or a jumper there instead of being backwards.
Had to do the same for my FT-817. Their audio out level is theough the roof. However, i have not measured it as compared to other radios.
It unshorts a 100K resistor. I like DigiRig products and the support is great.
Good to know!
Thanks Mike, Now if I want to go Mac and have issues I know how to fix!
Add a switch across the pads and have either.
That's the EASY button engaged!
Same similar problem with Window 11 - very hot at 65-80 with my C108 output at 0. I didn’t have the problem with Mint.
Same here but running Windows 11 and JTDX but a Kenwood 950SD. . Did you do this Digirig mod?
@@mikedevita5558 I have not. I just added a SDR to the mix and by using virtual audio cables, I can adjust the receive volume down. I may still do the snip for standalone ops in the future..
Thanks, I have been using a 20.00 line attenuator from amazon. may try this for dedicated mac digi.
I was waiting for you to say "and a hammer!" LOL! 73!
What did Frank do to the Window PC?
He Mike. I think this was my problem. I should try this. Thanks for the video. I think there should be a switch on the DigiRig for those of us that live in both worlds. Might have to mod that with a switch.
That would be pretty cool. I don't think adding the 20dB would really hurt on another computer as you could always increase the audio. I would think...
I've noticed the "hot mic" situation with my Windows 11 using JTDX to Kenwood 950SD. Is the "hot mic" situation peculiar only to Apple computers?
An exacto knife might be a little more manageable.
I mean, I just gotta ask - has Frank ever touched your DigiRig?? Good video, Mike.
hell no
Thank you that is an good fix to have it work with a better computer. I just wish you could do the same with the Ipad.
I almost bought a new iPad but decided the MacBook would be way more useful to me.
I can deal with a Macintosh if there are no Cortlands available.
Good to know. Thanks
Thanks for sharing! My G90 / computer needs to be turned way down to keep the meter out of the red. the maybe this will help.
It should.
Good info Mike! 73
I have the same issue in my 891 on my IBM computer.
Well you won't any more.
FRANK! Don't touch the Mac!
Screw Mac computers
Windows sucks my balls
😆
Easy mod. Thanks.
You bet
Mac costs too much and software I need to use is windows only.
I've got a video coming out tomorrow that might change your mind.
@@hamradiotube are you talking about software?
@@kd5inm I am.
@@hamradiotube the software I am refering to is windows only. If you saw what I'm talking about it would make sense.
You lost me at I got a MAC LOL
👍🏻
🤣 🤣 🤣 damit Frank
I will never let him live that down.
Lmao
Still haven't forgiven Frank? If you think it about get yourself a couple of dental tarter scrapers. Cheap.
I have a pack of 5 of them in my tool box! Good idea, but too late. Where were you when I was doing this yesterday!?
@hamradiotube married to a ginger nurse. Lots of med odds and ends. Box cutters....it worked...no digits lopped off.
@@hamradiotube Seriously though, I'm just an email away. I'm a sorta average EE and I'm real cheap (free).
Really? All of them? 😂
Oh, and does that void the warranty?
Well said.....
