  • I just upgraded to the M1 MacBook Air base model for all my photography needs. But is it good enough? I give my honest opinion on its functionality with Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. I explain exactly why I switched from the 15" MacBook Pro to the smaller M1 MacBook Air.

    Would you recommend this laptop as the only laptop to work with photography, as in no need for a extra desktop or something like that? I don't know anything about photography, but I am looking for a laptop (two, actually) to give to my sisters, both of which work with these softwares and photography. They have been struggling with Windows PCs to do their work for the longest time and seem to need Apple hardware to work more efficiently. Only problem is that where they live, Apple products are obscenely expensive because of import taxes. I want to give them a proper work laptop as a gift but I can only spend so much though, and at first this looks like a great budget option that I could pick for them.

    • @gkexposure4101
      @gkexposure4101  3 роки тому +4

      First of all that’s really really nice of you to purchase a MacBook for your sisters. Even if you’re just considering. I know it’s bot the cheapest I genuinely think it’s well worth the money you spend on these. You can output to a bigger monitor very easily which will help their workflow. If I had the choice to only have the MacBook Air as my main machine I don’t think I would say no. You’re absolutely right. Apple hardware does last longer.

    I love my M1 MacBook Air with 8GB ram but doing panorama stitching on Lightroom (native M1 code) I found that it struggles and takes quite a bit of time. So I upgraded to 16GBs and now it flies through. So if you do a lot of panoramic stitching then do consider 16GB model. This is the first time I bought the same notebook twice with just more RAM even skipping the new M1 pro/max models. For photo editing and occasional drone video editing, the base M1 air is plenty fast. Just consider more ram if you handle large photos or panoramas.

    Apple MacBook Air M1 with a 13.3-inch Retina display, 8GB RAM, and 256GB storage.

      It’s not bad. It’s got a little better considering the native compatibility. I wouldn’t recommend editing a wedding in LRC as it starts to get sluggish when copying and pasting settings from one image to another. Furthermore I’m finding that my external hard drive seems to get really hot. Like worryingly hot. I’ve recently bought the M1 pro base model. Testing that with LRC.

    • @gkexposure4101
      @gkexposure4101  3 роки тому +19

      Right now I would wait for the M2 or M1X whatever they’re going to call it. But if I had to choose then I would go for the MacBook Air 16GB RAM for photo editing and future proofing. Especially if it’s going to be your main machine. This is because the M1 pro will only give a slight boost in performance due to the active cooling system (fan). For photo editing you can always do with the extra RAM depending on how far you want to push it. I went for the 8GB model because I wanted a replacement for my old MacBook Pro for travelling. Even then I am more than happy with the performance. I regularly use my MacBook Air around the house for photo editing without any issues. Just waiting for Lightroom classic to go native M1. I can video edit. Something I wasn’t able to do on my previous MacBook Pro. I hope this helps. 😊👍

    Thank you for the video. I have a dilemma. I am an aspiring wedding photographer. I have done some
    events but not full time. Currently I have a 2010 (yes 12 years ago) MacBook Pro
    and a 2020 iPad Pro. I am thinking of selling the iPad and get a proper laptop.
    Ideally I would like the 16 inch MacBook Pro + new 27 Inch Apple Studio Display.
    This would give me a powerful laptop for portability and an amazing screen at
    home as I do not have a desktop. The downside with this combo is that it's going to be very costly.
    I wonder if I should just get the 16 inch MBP and forget the 27 inch display? Or
    would it be wiser to get a lower end MacBook ( say MacBook Air) + the new Apple
    Studio Display? Your input is much appreciated. Thank you.

    • @gkexposure4101
      @gkexposure4101  2 роки тому +1

      I wouldn’t get the 27 inch apple studio display. There’s cheaper 4K displays out there that do virtually the same thing (without the speakers). I personally have a MacBook Air and a Mac Studio which I’ve just ordered. Currently using a dell monitor but will be upgrading that to a banQ display shortly. You could potentially get the MacBook Pro 14 inch (great for travel) and an a really good monitor.

I believe the PC can only produce 1080 not 4K. Is it possible to get a good monitor for both my Apple laptop and PC laptop? How do I connect the laptops to one monitor? From my search I need something called the KMV switch? Do you have any insight on that?

    I'm watching this review over a year after it was made. I'm finding more recent videos, made within a month or two of 1/2023, is reporting that the 8gb version is getting really hot running Lightroom for more than 20minutes and having a noticeable difference in performance as a result. Are you experiencing this now that Lightroom is working proper with the M1? I just got the M1 iMac and found there's a huge difference in performance from the fans in the 8 vs 16 model. Does that apply with the MBA as well?
