There may also be a reason the customer to split orders. For example in EU we used to have a limit below which there were no taxes. Splitting order in two was sometimes cheaper than combining due to extra import costs that could be avoided.

I worked for a while at a place that did e-commerce type business. These type of orders would happen from time to time and we would always package them and charge them exactly as ordered. I asked the shipping boss why we didn't just combine them to make it easier and while he didn't mention scam he said something like "Hey, if they want them in two separate packages and are paying the shipping, maybe there is some reason they want this done." Start changing around things, you can get a pissed off customer that will say, why did you do that? I ordered them that way for a reason. It is sad, but that is the truth. NRF was just trying to save the guy a bit of money and the guy took advantage of them.

I used to work at a FEDEX where there are miles and miles of conveyor belts that the packages ride on to be automatically sorted and distributed from one end of the huge facility to the other before loaded into aircraft containers.
Even the US post office has a contract with FEDEX to carry the mail.
At the FEDEX facility I worked, on an average day we would have over a million packages come thru and during the pre Christmas period from Sept thru January we would have upwards to over 3 million packages come thru a day. You can only imagine the box jams on the conveyor system that would occur in many locations throughout the facility.
These box jambs are rough on the packages tearing them open from not just the other packages smashing into each other but the conveyor itself holding packages caught and belt friction wearing down the cardboard splitting them open and spilling the contents out all over the conveyor of which some of those conveyors go up 3 or 4 stories tall making it "rain" all kinds of things from open ripped boxes.
One suggestion to keep this from happening is to tape not just the long top and bottom flaps but also the 4 seams of the top and bottoms.
Those end seams can get things wedged in them and then due to the force of other boxes being rammed and pushed into them, they will catch that open seam and rip open.
Another problem I've seen is when a box is used that is too large for what is inside it.
The top can be pushed down and either ripping the tape or the "good" tape stays in place but the cardboard rips open and things can be stolen out of the box by dishonest sort workers.
I over heard an employee bragging how he was able to steal Iphone watches and earpods this way.
I also worked over seas in an American Embassy military post office and would help customers with their packages in that I would custom cut a box to make it fit the materials they were mailing out.
I've even built custom boxes from giant USPS mailing containers that had super reinforced cardboard.
I also saw the results of theft from incoming packages like the ones I talked about where the shipper used too large a box and the items were stolen from just being able to push in the top and take things out.
Yes, they did search you upon leaving the FEDEX facility but the women would hide those stolen Apple watches in their big wired bras so that when the metal detector went off, all they had to say was that they were wearing a bra with support wires.
Even though the packages are only briefly touched by loaders, it does not take but a second to push in a box top and take out things.
The sort workers KNOW which boxes from experience have the good stuff in them.
I always glue the flaps with Elmer's white glue to insure a good tightly sealed box.
You can put just a little glue line on the flaps and it will dry within a few minutes.
You don't have to wait to load a box after gluing it bottom and top.
With taped seams and glue, that box is pretty well sealed for anything.

@@Jencha010101 Many would be skeptical of sending a driver's license or any other form of ID as well.

    • @Leif_YT
      @Leif_YT Рік тому +3

True, also driver license is a very uncommon thing here to proof identity - many don't even have one. The general passport / ID card would be more common, but that's where people get skeptical for privacy issues.
I'm wondering how the additional security level of Mastercard and Visa works. Can a shop owner "require" it? I guess that would be a safe way for both sides. So far I only had to do it in a very few shops, but having to confirm a payment with the phone through that 2nd protection/auth level is a pretty good solution for both sides.

The "credit card issuance country different from order country" situation can still be applied to legit customer.
In my case, I'm from Vietnam so my CC is Vietnam's, but I go to Japan for study and work. Now when I order something, the order will come from Japan, with a Vietnam issued CC.

They are horrible and you will have more complaints than you need to deal with.....they are terribly inefficient, they will claim a business is CLOSED on a Sunday because they're too lazy to check for themselves or be bothered to pull into a driveway and double-check. I have had to drive to a FedEx hub to get a package on a Saturday so my customer wouldn't cancel his $900 order because the driver didn't feel like checking if my office was opened and just put into the claim that I was closed.

I've dealt with the two order situation. Luckily I have always been strict with my policy and if they place two orders and then contact me about combining them I explain our payment processor (paypal) requires orders to be shipped as they are placed. I can either ship them as they were ordered or I offer to cancel and refund both orders and they can place a new order with everything combined. This way the tracking always matches up. No editing the orders. Most customers understand and many of them have you ship as is because they don't want to take the time to place a new order. Also during the refund they have to wait for the money to show back up if they don't have additional money in their account for the new order. This is the world we live in. Its also a hard situation when they find out shipping insurance covers up to the point of delivery. Porch theft is not covered.

It is sad this has to be done. I sometimes browse a site and order something and a moment later i see they have something that i also need but did not find because of bad search function or whatever reason, i would love the shop to combine the orders in the same package but now i understand why most ship it as different packages. It is a shame 1% costs 99% more money but it is a must for the seller

I have sent back to Verizon two cell phones, but instead doing two packages I combined them to one, because I was paying for shipment and guess what?
Verizon charged me for second phone saying that they didn't receive it.
After this I terminated service with them and moved to T-Mobile.

I used to be a eBay top seller and for situations like yours I would ship them 1 large order with the two things combined and then ship a gift for the second order so you have 2 trackings. Its good to give a gift as customer service and in case you get a liar of a customer like you had you covered yourself by having the second tracking number. But I would be careful if it's freight those can be more tricky.

In europe we have quite strict rules around using credit cards and payments in general. Most of them uses multifactor authentication where you need to confirm your card with your bank before making transiaction, especially if it's high value transiaction. Don't you have anything similar in US? The middle man that would save you such hassle and protect both customer and your business.
