  • My Lowepro Whistler 450AW broke, and I had to replace it on the double. We're back reviewing camera/cinema backpacks, and trying to find the best option. What bag carries the most, and still fits in a Embraer carry-on bin?

    Ok,let's shake some trees...
I have an Osprey backpack and the stitching on the shoulder straps started to unravel.I bought the pack a long time ago,and used it ti hike around 3 times, once in the Gunks.I contacted them and they did not ask for a receipt, did not ask me where i bought it,and sent me info to send it in to be fixed or replaced...period..I have a Timbuk2 i had to get stitched once,by a shoemaker for like 5 bucks,if that, and then took it to the Timbuk store in NYC.They told me they would donate the bag i have, give me a discount on a new one,and were quite helpful.I have used that bag all over, carrying skates, small electronics, waterbottle, and some clothes, for yearsssssssssssssss....REAL companies stand by their gear and would prosecute anyone making counterfeit products, standing by their warranties.Anyone who will warranty their bag for LIFE is secure with their products and customer service...

My issue with most of these bags is that if you have a laptop in the laptop compartment and then access your camera gear on a table the weight will crush the laptop. Accessing the gear with the backpack on your waist is not ideal. I had the Think Thank Urban Approach 15 and that would also crush my laptop if I set it down to access gear. The TT Airport Essentials had the laptop pouch on the outside and did not crush the laptop when you set it down but the straps on that backpack were really thin and cut into my shoulders. Finally found close to perfect bag with the purchase of the Mindshift Trailscape 18 which is perfect for mirrorless, does not crush your laptop, and has great straps. I wish there was a larger bag similar to Trailscape design.

Great video! I think if anyone can give a qualified review on backpacks/bags its you because of your real life experiences. You pointed out things that I was not aware of! Many thanks. Hope you are able to resolve the Lowepro issue otherwise this would not look good on that company!

Both your camera bag reviews that I've seen were top-notch. Your pacing and articulation are spot-on, and the points you make are all valid. I happen to have the F-Stop Sukha, which I love, but your point about the ICU's is well-made; stuff can slip around them. In my case, I do occasionally swap out the ICU's and have found that capability worthwhile. I, too, however, would like a backpack to use as a carry-on. I was considering the Lowepro Flipside 450 (seems not so robust, however) or the Mindshift Backlight 36L, so hope to hear more from you regarding your decision!

good bag reviews! what is your experience with the heavy load on the overhead bins? Also if you like rugged but not to heavy bags the Evoc CP35L is a bag to check out. served me well for the past 3 years. no big top pocked though... The Shimoda Design bags look promising too.

Hi Matt, I really wish you had put the backpack names somewhere on the screen. It was really hard to understand which one your are reviewing.

Lowepro sent the message to me when I tried to have my bag repaired. I was not a happy camper. I also had issues with my Pacsafe Camera backpack. The shoulder strap is starting to tear at the seam. I carry a minimal mirrorless setup and don't abuse my gear. Rather than offer to repair or replace the bag, they said that they would give me 30% off toward a new one. WTF, why would I buy another bag from you when you didn't support the first?

    I really like your videos!
At the end which bag did you get?
I want to buy a lowepro whistler but I'm looking for a shimoda explorer, have you used it?

Nice detailed reviews. I’m torn between the Whistler 350 and the Protactic 350

AcidicDelusion I’m actually now leaning towards a Shimoda 40l but need to wait till June/July when they get more stock.
FYI My mate bought the ProTactic 450 last week and it’s really nice. Smaller and more compact than I expected and it’s the size I would prefer which makes me think whistler 350 would be too small?

Shak Naim yea the protactic 450 is really nice but there's just something about the whistler I like

You will appreciate the Insert ICU system when you are boarding a flight and you are told you have to check your bag. At that time you have the choice of (1) not traveling (B) Checking in your bag and pray you don't lose your equipment or (3) be glad that you have an ICU that you can take in the plane with you while your nag is on the belly of the plane.

I only use bags that fit in the Embraer 145 and CR200 bins. Won't ever gate check anything. Also ensure I'm always first on the plane. Never gate check. 200 flights a year. One of the reasons I'll only fly Star Alliance, since I'm 1k and know all the equipment. It isn't worth flying otherwise.

Problem with Lowepro, because of the insert design, is that it puts the bulk of the weight at the bottom of the backpack. Putting your personal gear in the front of the bag maybe a little less convenient than on top, but take the word of a lifelong mountain climber, you want the weight of your pack as high up as possible. Look at backpackers....foam role under the pack and tent on top with heaviest internal items at the top. Also, I think the customizable inside of other makes makes it more useful if, for example, you want to make room for a drone (Mavic).

This review would be so much better if 4 years ago, you hadn't crushed the wagon. I may have even watched it.

You should try Gitzo adventure 45l. If you want I can do a review on it. :)

Lowepro bags are definitely of lesser quality compared to many of the other big brands, especially Think Tank / Mindshift (which are fantastic). I had 3 backpacks from Lowepro, and they all had issues with the stitching. I finally had enough and will not buy their products anymore.

Can’t see $hi? From your wide angle shot. Don’t care what’s in your garage. Overheads are good but too fast.

The background noise was a constant nuisance. Coupled with the presenter's idiosyncratic English, There were intelligibility problems.
