The reason being Shimano brake fluid here costs $18 for 1 liter jug. And you cannot get smaller quantity. 1) It's stupidly expensive for mineral oil. 2) What the hell am I gonna do with 1 L when brake system takes what....30-40 mL? No way I'm gonna bleed my brakes 20 times in my bike's lifetime.
When I rode trials, alot of us ran our magura hs33's on water, or water with a drop of anti freeze in winter. It made the breaks less spongy, more responsive, and lighter to pull. You'd get about a year out of the seals, but most trials riders broke a lever or something before then and had to get a new brake anyway! I'd be more than happy to use baby oil in a pinch :)
Doesn't some manufactures also use special breakfluids that are basically water with anti freeze and of course some othe viscosity reagents? Like for example SRAM. They normally perform as well as hydrolic breaks with oil. But of course they can freeze and that means they are a bit more sensible to low degrees(The brakes may not work or the water expands below 4 °C and this may damage the tubes). But on higher temperatures water does not expand as much as oil...
I remember doing the same....But I just used anti freeze as it was more common at home than distilled water. I used to grease the pistons from the outside every now and then and seals lasted forever....I also remember scratching and adding waterproofing the rim so it was sticky to the pads. But down slopes the question was what to sacrifice: the hebo shoes or the new brake pads.
As a bicycle mechanic for roundabout 10years I tested the same thing with various liquids. Baby Oil was one of my favorites. I started this after a colleague of mine was telling the story of him riding through Africa with a HS33 and no proper oil within a 300mile radius. So he just used water. Aslong as the temps are fine you can use almost any liquid that doesnt dissolve your seals.
Thanks Seth for resisting the temptation to simply say all the hydraulic brake manufacturers are ripping us off - this is a nuanced (and entertaining) view. While I'm not going to experiment with my braking system to save (maybe) a few bucks a year, it's good to know if my hydraulic brakes have a problem while I'm bikepacking and I come across a town with no open bike shops, I can get by with baby oil in one brake without any immediate obvious consequences.

Hey Seth! I had a great idea and was waiting for your new video! You should make a Berm Creek “dedication” piece on Berm Peak! It would be so cool! You could do the drama drop and maybe create a better “Janky wall ride!” Just an idea!
I deal with hydraulic systems in my everyday job and honestly aside from viscosity most hydraulic oils are very similar whether that be mineral oils or "true hydraulic oils". Love the vids!
Seals and oils must be compatible, or the oils will slowly(or rapidly) soften and expand the seals... and fail at a bad time(usually). What works for a tractor's hydraulics might not work well in cycle brakes, fork oil, differential lube, etc. There's a reason why there are so many different lube formulations, and it's not about making more money(for the vast majority of lubes). It's about application and compatibility. Sure, you can cheap out on maintenance, but why would you do that on something that keeps you out of the trees?
After 35 years in the fragrance industry I can tell you that baby oil is only light mineral oil (Shellsol T or similar) with about 0.3% of added perfume concentrate. Quite a lot of that perfume is the carrier that's used to dissolve some of the solid perfume ingredients like vanillin and that's DEP or diethyl phthalate, which is pretty innocuous. Baby perfume doesn't contain any esters or orange terpenes (sold as citrus degreaser) so is unlikely to cause any long-term damage to rubber seals. There will be about 30 - 50 other odoriferous ingredients in the perfume but at an overall dosage of 0.3%, with between 10% and 40% of DEP included, nothing is present at a high enough dose to do any harm. You could use plain light chemist shop mineral oil, 3 in 1 lubricating oil and I daresay even diesel in your brakes. Actually water would be great but we know it boils. Shimano brake oil has a red dye added to justify the high price and there are dozens or even hundreds of different weights of mineral oil available so don't overthink this!
I've been running Johnson's finest in my Shimanos for months now with no obvious problems. This idea saved my day when I found myself needing a refill miles from the nearest open bike shop and I haven't seen a reason to change it since. Thanks for the great bike hack Seth!
@@waleedassaf1836 eventually changed brakes as caliper where leaking a bit but they where very old. The baby oil seemed fine, would use again if needed.
I had the same idea with my tractor's hydraulic system, so I researched it. Proper oils will usually include rust inhibitors and detergents so that they'll cope better with any water contamination that gets into the system. This is honestly a lot more likely on a car or tractor where the reservoirs have lids that just open by hand. Tractors even have quick disconnects to remove front loaders etc, so they're way more likely to get contamination in the oil. On a bike the system is sealed and there's really no reason to require special additives in the oil.

I've been running pure Mineral Oil (the non-baby formula) for years now, and will say that it holds up as well as name brand brake fluid. But with 1 major caveat. If you're going down a long hill and just riding your brakes, the Mineral Oil does get spongier faster, but I've had Metallic pads loose their friction coefficient and the rotor get red hot even before the brakes became really spongey. Yes, the name brand stuff will last longer, but depending on your riding habits, the Mineral oil off the shelf vs brand name stuff might not even make a difference. But even then, I feel Mineral Oil can be had for so much cheaper than the brand name stuff, that you could probably replace the fluid at least 100 times with mineral oil before getting close to spending the same amount on the brand name stuff. Personally, I've gone through about half of a 16oz (473ml) bottle of Mineral oil at $2, exchanging the fluid pretty much every other month. At that rate, it's still way cheaper than the brand name stuff that usually sells 100ml for $10 or more.
The thing is: 100ml bottles of Shimano oil cost 10$ 1l containers cost about 15 to 20$. It seems you pay more for the packaging process then for the actual content. So if you buy large enough quantities, the price gets very low too. And even then: you can spend 30-60$ on a dropper lever, 10-30$ on grips and so on... 10-20$ for brake oil isn't that big of a deal. But then again, if other stuff works fine for you, save money if you think it's worth it.
I have a big jug of Food grade mineral oil I will be using...don't need stinking overpriced "special" oils that cost 10X more! Hydrolics is a simple concept...a bike system never gets as hot as astoping a 2 ton car!
At some point, the added confidence in a company that developed its own brake fluid is worth paying a few dollars more for, and taking a few less stops at the coffee shop in a year to compensate.
Not sure if you’ve already done this hack, but a great alternative to one of the metal nubs at the end of your shift cable is a small cut of heat shrink tubing. Love your videos!
For "mineral" oil brake systems: Use engine oil or (better) automatic transmission fluid ATF (Yes, it is oil). Do NOT use brake fluid in those systems. Engine oil and ATF have additives which protect against corrosion, protects gaskets and O rings and more. They also have high boiling point. Synthetic oil is fine if you have it around, but it is an overkill. Baby oil does not have those additives and I doubt if Shimano's oil have them either. BTW: Some heavy equipment use ATF in their hydraulic system. If the manufacturer specifies brake fluid (DOT 4 usually), which is NOT oil, DO NOT use any oil. If you are considering a new brake system, go for "mineral". Brake fluid (mostly DOT4) is hygroscopic and will cause corrosion over time. I've topperd off my brakes with culinary quality mineral oil, and do full bleeds with the real bike oil. Works fine. I get 1 gallon of oil for the same price as 2 tiny bottles of Shimano.
I’m pretty sure every time he asks that question, his wife has chained him to his workbench away from the baby, brake oil and the cameras until he looses the idea and begins on something else, where the cycle begins again. (I’m looking at you April fools day, don’t give him any ideas!)
Extremely safe! The same oil is used in alcohol-free perfumes and Avon Skin so Soft all over the world without harm and the perfume ingredients have been tested to death and any with a slight question mark have been outlawed.
I actually ran pharmacy mineral oil in my brakes a while ago. It does NOT work for cold conditions as the temp. drops the viscosity goes up a lot and it meant that my brakes be hard to pull and once pulled would stay there. Definitely sketchy. Replacing with real stuff immediately fixed the issue.
I don’t even own a bicycle, but I watched the whole video. And I swear I could smell baby oil as I was watching it 🤔 I have to say that I enjoyed this video and I also have to give you (or your team) credit for the camera footage and editing. This is a very well put together show. Netflix quality 😎👍🏼 thanks for the entertainment.
Thanks... I have a shop and I have been in situations where I could not get recommended brake oils. So I went shop to shop looking for baby oils with mineral oil content. In this country, you cannot find them!!! And unlike the USA where you can buy mineral oil in many stores, it seems people have never heard of it here! So in my search, I found Vaseline Hair Tonic (Blue) to have the maximum amount of mineral oil... I used it to top-up and it worked like a charm. I still keep it as spare. But now I have plenty of recommended mineral oil at hand AND I just ordered a lot of "cutting board" mineral oil to use as a substitute! Thanks for the video... I have no doubt that baby oil with the highest percentage of mineral oil will work just fine. But as you say if it may not pass some tests, specifically because of concentration (percentage) of mineral oil.
Automatic transmission fluid. I promise you can probably get it in any nation that has cars. Alternatively, go to a place that repairs heavy equipment. Ask for tellus 32. They’ll probably give you a gallon for free.
Hi Seth. Great channel. Always entertaining. Maybe you can do a "Viscosity" test between different mineral brake oils? Like a drip test or something like it to compare viscosities? Johnson's baby oil has a baby oil lite which is less viscous so it will defiinitely have a different effect.
non-toxic, lubricating properties, inexpensive, components in-tact. excellent option. i remember running atf fluid in my front suspension. splash lubrication. worked awesome.
The best part was claiming you don't know if it will work in other peoples riding cases but worked fine in yours and then flash back to that clip of you screaming down that hill at almost 50 mph...I think I get the subtle disclaimer joke... Priceless 😂
I did that yesterday I'm going to test it now. if it takes care of the babies for sure it will take good care of my seals. UPDATE: the same performance as the original one, no difference in a long steep downhill

As a 20+ year rider (now in my 40ties), I dissed slightly on some of the vids here where (much) more attention was given to visuals than technical side. That said, this one is right up my alley - how to cheat BBB (Big Bike Bozos, not the brand BBB). Today dismantled old Italian Brembo... No, Formula Oro K18 brakes and tried to push the piston back to replace pads, wouldn't budge even after 30 minutes of mallarchy, so... I think baby oil it is. Dismantle, clean, fill, bleed. Formula Oro, as far as I've understood, is making also Giant-branded brakes. Thanks for the advice and greetings from Latvia.
when i had a rusty big box store mtb, the front derailleur was failing to shift to the highest gear so i lubed it up with baby oil and voila but it made a weird sound for some reason but it went away in a couple of days
Would be intresting to know how well it performs in -10°C or even colder. Some oil gets thick at low temperatures, guess that could reduce brake performance a lot.
😄😄😄here's another post I really enjoyed watching and laughing at, you really got this one dialed Seth, you always host each and every post perfectly well! 👌🏻👍🏻🙋🏻♂️
I ran drug store mineral oil in my brakes and it worked great until the temps went down. Below freezing, the oil gets thick and it got to the point that applying brakes becomes difficult and the pads barely release at all.
My brakes say Mineral Oil. NAPA had a 1 gal can, $28. Baby Oil ingredients, mineral oil, fragrance. Worked fine on my 4.9 inch fat tire electric bike. Even in winter. It's not a formula one car.
Maybe it was mentioned in the other video, but please do not do this with DOT4 or DOT5.1 brake fluid systems as you will really mess the seals up. If you are in a pinch needing a quick fix on the trail, you can use water with DOT fluid and it won't wreck the seals, just mind the brake boiling. For mineral fluid systems, stick with basic oils in emergencies.
I slam trails, I bleed once a year for good measure. But I’ve had baby oil in my brakes for years, have at it people. $40 CAD for shimano or tektro’s oil, and close to $70 for rockshox, haha.

Same go for 2-cycle oil?
its insane how far seths channel has come, I remember watching his "how to bunny hop" tutorial about 3 years ago now
Good to know that it can be used as an alternative :)
"And only the rear had DaBaby oil in it"

4 years ago this was fine but to day its funny af
I've topperd off my brakes with culinary quality mineral oil, and do full bleeds with the real bike oil. Works fine. I get 1 gallon of oil for the same price as 2 tiny bottles of Shimano.
Seth is one of the only UA-camrs whose videos I watch 100%
Now that Seth is a dad, are we ever going to get an answer if brake oil is safe for babies?
The exact same thing happened to me
I going to try TRW mineral oil for cars, tractors, etc.
Hey Seth got my full sus on Christmas loving the vids
diddys dream bike
"Brakes", "Baby", and "Oil" are no longer words
That’s called Semantic Satiation. Its a very weird phenomenon. You say a word enough times, and it loses all meaning.
As a bonus, your hands are really soft after the procedure.
True
So that’s what diddy was doing with all that baby oil 😂
I’ve been waiting for this forever
The best part was claiming you don't know if it will work in other peoples riding cases but worked fine in yours and then flash back to that clip of you screaming down that hill at almost 50 mph...I think I get the subtle disclaimer joke... Priceless 😂
“I still don’t understand why you have to fill your baby with oil”
😂😂
Behold: the diddy bike.
A few months ago I ended up doing this. Works just as fine as Shimano mineral oil, exactly the same!!
I did that yesterday I'm going to test it now. if it takes care of the babies for sure it will take good care of my seals. UPDATE: the same performance as the original one, no difference in a long steep downhill
Give us a monthly update lol
Any updates on this?
@@Cloudrak works perfectly fine, tested downhill
Is there any Update? ☺️
please any updates ? like after a year of use ? is it still good ?
I've been using ordinary pharmacy mineral oil in my shimano xtr since 2014 and it is still doing great..... no issues at all
Can you assist me please?
I just want to say that i personally did this the same day i saw seth upload the original baby oil video and followed along with my amazon zoom brakes (shimano SLX clines). Im happy to announce that even the amazon brakes have no problem with baby oil now 4 years later
Your bike runs on diddy oil noooooo
Good way to start the decade😂
Diddy brakes
I love seths face when he mtbs 😂🤣
hahahahahahhaahah
There's a hidden message in all that disclaiming...
Ype, and that message is: "shit's no different. Use what you want".
It's been in my KTM magura hydraulic clutch for a year with no ill affects at all
In Norway 100ml brake oil will set you back 10 dollars, so I definitely would be interested in trying. (You can buy a liter for 20 dollars though)
when i had a rusty big box store mtb, the front derailleur was failing to shift to the highest gear so i lubed it up with baby oil and voila but it made a weird sound for some reason but it went away in a couple of days
Clicked on the video as soon as it popped up on my screen! Haven't watched the whole video but I think it's gonna be 👍
My brakes say Mineral Oil. NAPA had a 1 gal can, $28. Baby Oil ingredients, mineral oil, fragrance. Worked fine on my 4.9 inch fat tire electric bike. Even in winter. It's not a formula one car.
This is what diddy actually needed baby oil for
😂😂
Maybe it was mentioned in the other video, but please do not do this with DOT4 or DOT5.1 brake fluid systems as you will really mess the seals up.
If you are in a pinch needing a quick fix on the trail, you can use water with DOT fluid and it won't wreck the seals, just mind the brake boiling. For mineral fluid systems, stick with basic oils in emergencies.
In my case I live in South America where all the named brand stuff is super expensive because of a devalued peso, so yeah, baby oil all the way baby!
hey seth is everything ok with you, im vorried becouse you havent postet a video yet?
ANDREJ ČERČEK yeah me too, he hasnt posted anything on his instagram too
Memes on the Daily yes I see it , do you think is everything ok with him.? meybe he is just having some time to relax i dont know
ANDREJ ČERČEK of course now that we say this he posted something within 24 hours
Maybe the oil didnt work after all
shay cohen hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
No diddy
When I get a deep cut on hands I put break oil. It immediately stops bleeding and prevent infection. I work with glass a lot.
I was just watching the vid of when you filled up your Break with baby oil 😂
Next video: What if you use brake oil for babies
I waited a whole year for this vidio 💀💀 I was so hyped for it and I diddnt get let down❤️
“Can brake oil be used on babies?”
I’ll test it on my little bro and update y’all next vid.
Lmao underrated
Use it for a year! Lol
Sound Like Tie Fighters! 😂
Ain't no party like a Diddy party
Diddy looking for this bike
Seth: *Posts video*
Me: *Doesn't look at title and immediately clicks video regardless*
Your experiments - and videos are GREAT! No wonder you’re da man of UA-cam. Thanks.
Yesssssssssss another Seth vid
I slam trails, I bleed once a year for good measure. But I’ve had baby oil in my brakes for years, have at it people. $40 CAD for shimano or tektro’s oil, and close to $70 for rockshox, haha.
Loose vent screw and I have lost the oil from rear break. Filled with baby oil and it's working. In my country Shimano oil is 12 $ for 100 ml. Thanks for the video.
Haven’t watched yet been waiting a long time for this
Just watched it I take that as a win
