I stripped this dresser with Citristrip vs a chemical stripper like KwikStrip to do a side by side comparison and was not happy with the results. I was still able to paint this dresser but unfortunately I could not stain the top because Citristrip ruined the wood. Please let me know if you enjoy this product and what I can do to get it to work in the future! I will be streaming live on UA-cam for the month of October.

I hope you enjoyed this video. Let me know your experience with Citristrip stripper. I will be live streaming for the month of October. No set schedule. If you can catch a live stream, come say hi!
I agree with you, it sucks! I always use the kleen strip 15 min you use. I have friends who swear by it. The citristrip that is lol.
Yeah, I found citristrip to be a good IDEA but not really practical. Really frustrating! My go-to is the kwik strip.
I'm no professional and haven't seen your channel in a while, but do you ever use a scraper rather than stripper?
Hi, curious why you painted the piece with the drawers inserted. Doesn't that leave upainted area when drawers are open and what about the drawer sticking to the dresser frame. Thanks!
I use it all the time and it works awesome.
Oxalic acid is good for removing stains on wood. That may help on future projects. However the dresser looks excellent! You really gave it an updated look! Good job!
It turned out really good. I like how the stain gave it a professional look instead of a one-color paint flat look. Since I ran out of furniture of my own to finish, I really enjoy watching other people do it. Unless you have done it yourself, you really cannot appreciate all the work that goes into it and time also.
I've only used Citri Strip one time but never again!! This project turned out so beautiful. So glad you added the knobs. They really made a difference overall. 🥳
Nice to see you back, love that smile ! Great job on showing the difference in strippers ! Cabinet turned out not too shabby.
👍 🇨🇦 ✌️
Well this is very helpful. I was just at Lowes debating between Citrusstrip and Kutter. Glad I waited.
I love this video so much. This was my experience with Citrashit too. If I am trying to be profitable I need the product to work as fast as possible. My go-to is Kwik Strip 15 min. To add insult to injury I decided to try the oven cleaner trend and blackened one side of my dresser. Glad to know I am not the only one getting mad at these trends that waste my time and energy. I put on my big girl mask and gloves and use Kwik Strip.👍😜 P.S. If you have Naptha in your area you can add a little to your stain to get a longer open time but it also dries slower.
I agree with your opinion of Citristrip. There are a lot of companies coming out with safer strippers. I tried one called safe strip. It’s a white paste. It did a great job on paint, but I have not yet tried it on varnish/top coats. No smell, and you can use it without gloves. I was impressed. I am extremely fume sensitive, so solvent based strippers just are not for me. Project looks great.
I prefer the Kwik Strip also. The Citristrip just doesn’t have as much strength, even with plastic over it for a few days.
I lived in New Zealand for a couple of years and used caustic soda, which is a plumbing chemical, to strip a Kaori dresser. That's what they use to strip there. Anyway it darkened the wood quite dramatically but I used Oxalic acid and it came right back. I have used citrus based, environmentally friendly, strippers before and they aren't there yet. All that said, nice job on the dresser.
You were one of the first folks I started watching. One of the things I like the most is yr honesty. Several times you have stopped me from making a mistake. Plus I love how u do not waste time with inconsequential words. I prefer to hear what I came to learn. No pussyfooting around. You commit to a course of action and GO! I'm ex-military, maybe that has something to do with it. Lastly, I was nervous about the stain but you made that piece a one-of-a-kind. It came out beautiful! Like u said, practice and attention to detail!
Love love your content and the way it is presented. Happy holidays my friend!
I recommend using Gel Stain for glazing it gives you more time you’ll love it
Could not agree more on the citrus strip. It had a better formula years ago but they definitely changed it and it isn’t good anymore. Have not had a good experience with it the last few years
They ruined Citri-Strip's formula a few years ago. It used to be my go to but gave it up once they changed the formula.
Shitristrip! 😂💀 Gorgeous final result. Nice work, Ryan!
Thanks for being honest about products.
The dresser turned out beautifully
GORGEOUS 😍. YES I hate Citristrip too.
Thank you for your info and I can imagine your frustration. I don't like using citrus strip myself because it's too slow in working and I'd rather just use the 15-minute one and get it over with.
That turned out beautifully. Love it.
Well!! Tell it like it is!! I used it 1x. That was all i needed to determine i would not use it again. i use kwik strip. There is a new one by Stripwell that works good on vintage (non painted) furniture. It takes a bit longer but there is not as much ‘goop’. paper towels and steel wool. I use that now on my flame veneer pieces.
Love it! That orange would have scared me off, for sure.
Turned out absolutely gorgeous!
I agree ditch that citrus stripper, I've learned much from you and enjoy your narrative work
*Love your Smokey Signature Look* .. the hardware looks beautiful against that color .. ♥️
It looks beautiful with the paint! Not a loss even though stain makes them pop in contrast. I enjoy this technique you use with stain on the paint like that.
CitriStrip used to have a neutralizer that you used after the main strip. It was a fantastic product that got the last of the original finish out of the cracks as well as stopping any chemical reaction between your new finish and any of the stripper residue left behind. But I can't find it anymore.
I use it all the time and it really works well.. doesn't hurt my wood and it removes all paint and stain with little effort
Beautiful! Love the color then the glaze just made it pop! Thank you for the video
Great job.. thanks for the citristrip test.. love the way this turned out
Gorgeous solution to the set back!
Awsome! Just beautiful.
Digging the teenage angst version of That Shabby Guy in this video, haha
As always; came out beautiful
I bought one container of citristrip and haven't bought it again since. I hated it. I like blue bear soy gel as a paint and varnish stripper.
Looks very good. Loved the colors
I agree with you. Citristrip is not up to the job. I use Blue Bear. Historically, Citristrip was much stronger, but to comply California regulations, they used a different formula which dramatically reduced its effectiveness.
Gorgeous!
They’re made by the same company! That said, I hate citristrip! But, I’m old enough to have spent many years using the old and dangerous chemicals! If you followed the directions it was fast and efficient! Try 2 minute stripper. It takes more than 2 minutes but it’s very good!
It looks amazing!!
Love the glaze,,beautiful
Beautiful as always. I love your work ❤
Beautiful!
I love your work even though I usually prefer the original finish.
Thankyou, I thought my use of citris trip mishap was because I was a newbie
You do this technique very well. Looks great!
Thank you so much!
Looks so nice!
Beautiful!
Beautiful!!
Nice! Thanks for the tip about Citristrip. I was considering it for paint removal but will use KwikStrip instead. 👍🏻
I used Citristrip on a couple of tables. No paint. Only a stained finish. Citristrip worked fine. No issues.
Beautiful.
It's really beautiful.
Nice work as always
Really pretty!!
Nice cabinet, I like that type of handle and they go so well on this unit. Shame about the citric stripper, it shouldn’t compromise the natural colour of the wood like that. ❤
I have always has good luck with Citristrip on old finishes. I recently restored an old cedar chest and it took the finish right off and I was able to work inside. I used it on a few old trunks and it worked great. I would not recommend on painted or polyurethane finishes however. It isn't strong enough and bound to make a mess. I like to go as non toxic whenever I can but it definitely has it's limitations.
Beautiful 😍
Hello Ryan!
Many vlogs have recommended Flexio sprayer
Great to see you working!
Hi Ryan! Good to see you! Good job!
I love it!
Wow - is that really the same dresser? Holy cow excellent job, well worth the effort!
It's beautiful
It came out great and thank s for showing this clip I learned not to use citrus strip 👍❤️🌹
YOU ARE THE BEST ❤
I used Citristrip - both with and without the saran wrap - and it sucks. In order to get it to remove the paint from the project, it had to sit long enough that it raised the wood grain. I never was able to fix the issue and ended up trashing the piece. Had finished the associated projects as I didn't know what other stripper to use. Everyone I knew recommended the Citristrip.
Perfect.
It looks great! I'm glad it's been transformed now and it's not sitting around reminding you of ruining it....still, I think it looked better 2 tone than that original orange 🤣👍
Awesome
This dresser looks so fresh!
This is beautiful! I love the color. I intensely dislike Early American - would it be possible to cut that scalloping on the bottom?
Helpful thank you
Gorgeous
Here I was thinking I was doing something wrong when I used the Control strip! The stuff is awful. Live the way the way the stain gave the blue a smoky look. Thank you great job
Dad's Easy Spray for me
It looks fabuous.
Good job.
Wow. Just subscribed. Thanks for the heads-up on Citrustrip. Have you had a chance to come up with recomendations for sprayers. Thank you for sharing your passion.
I havent had a chance to go out and buy a bunch of sprayers and test them like I've been wanting to but I have tried the Graco TrueCoat again at a friend's house and I do like it over the cheaper wagners that I have used in my videos here. No bulky machine, it is cup fed so it uses less paint, which means you can use chalk style/boutique paints rather than being limited to 1 gallon cans like I am with the Graco Magnum series. I might actually buy one for myself so I can mess with other paint brands. Thanks for subscribing. Hope this helps.
Love it.❤ I agree, citrus strip is a waste.
😂 Shitristrip. Couldn't be more accurate. That EXACT same thing happened to me on a similar dresser, and I refuse to use it again.
Oh no!
I hear ya , yep tried to get paint off a dresser using citrus strip .....just a waste of money & time ended up throwing the dresser away .
The 3 dislikes must be employees of CitruStrip
Klean Strip and Citristrip are made by the same company oddly enough
@@ThatShabbyGuy Ah! I didn't know that. I was just being silly. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Your videos have given me the confidence to embark on this journey!
I actually just found out too. At least I dont have to worry about getting sued. I'm technically promoting their other product at the same time lol
NICE!!!...😊
Wow. That's all I've ever used...citus strip. But seeing the results u got on the other half of the dresser. I won't buy citrus strip any longer
We have one of those sprayers Graco it’s for big jobs did a beautiful on our shed and bathroom remodel next summer the outside of our house. Love it but furniture not impressed Harbor freight has several little sprayers that work great for furniture.
It looks great, thanks for the tip of avoiding citrus strip. I do not think I have ever heard you say cuss word but when you said citrus strips should be called citrus shit I knew this product was not good.
Nice new ink.
Thanks. I've had it for about 9 years.
@@ThatShabbyGuy It looked kind of shiny like it had several layers of goop. That's why I assumed it was new. Thanks for doing the badass work you do. Before EVERYONE and their Granny was doing flips on UA-cam, there was you. I had to binge all that you had up. You got me thinking I may have a tiny bit of talent and might be able to hobby some furniture.
Ah. That was mosquito spray. I work out of my garage and live in a forested area. It is a constant battle. Thanks for the kind words.
I looked all over this video and in the description… what exactly is the color and brand for the blue paint ? Thanks !
It was Valspar Signature. A color from the mistint shelf at Lowes that had no label. It is a mystery
Do you still have that blue dresser on the side of the video? That thing is a piece of art, i still remember watching the video where you refinished it.
“Shitristrip” 😂😂🤣
What size spray tip are you using?? Looks huge...casts lots of overspray
I discovered your channel today and it has motivated me to paint an asian inspired bedroom set I inherited from my late parents. My biggest dilemma is choosing the color. Right now the furniture set isa dark walnut color. There are some designs on the set would like to keep. Do you have any suggestions on the color I can paint the set? I will be spray painting since I own a Wagner Flexio 2500.
Hard to tell without seeing pictures. I have a wonderful group of over 200k members who share their work, ask questions, offer advice, etc. You should post your furniture there and you'll get all the inspiration you need. facebook.com/groups/paintedfurnitureart
God! You are good ! Love your channel, what's your opinion on crackling? I have a 120 yr old home that am in the process of remodeling, l wish would have been able to restore it, but unfortunately the 120 yrs of life has taken much if it's original history. I'm going for a rustic farmhouse theme and wanted to use a crackling technique on some cabinets in the kitchen.
Have you ever used golf tees for plugging the hardware holes?
I haven't
Savrseno!!!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It looks really great! I am very impressed with how well you were able to match the knobs to the pulls! I have been watching your live streams whenever I see one, I really like those, it's great the way you interact with your viewers. I hope you continue to do them. I have two questions, when you say that you can keep "rewetting" the oil based stain until you get the desired results, over how long of a period can you do this? How long is it before the oil based stain is too dry to rewet? Also is that an Ethan Allen dresser? It looks very similar to one my aunt had.
It should be done within an hour or so for the best results. I have left it sitting for 24 hours before but that was during the winter so it probably didn't dry out like it does in the heat. It is more of a "well this isn't working let's fix this now) solution. You can always rub of dried stain from paint with mineral spirits and start over but way more work.
@@ThatShabbyGuy Thanks and thank you for the way you really engage with your viewers. More UA-camrs should follow your lead.
I like Citristrip. You just didn't use it correctly.
KIDDING!!! But just to clarify, you didn't like it, orrrr??? 😉
The dresser looks awesome! I look forward to your next redo!!
When I got the notification for this comment on my phone all I could see was the first part. You had me for a sec lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@ThatShabbyGuy 🤣 Sorry for the broken phone that you threw across the room. LOL
I bought a huge bucket of Citristrip to do my front and back doors. Wonder if I can return it??
I would
How long does the stain/glaze have to dry before applying the Polyurethane? Does it matter if I use a wipe on polyurethane or will that ruin the glaze? I have a bedroom set I would like to use your technique.
Drying time depends on the weather. If it is hot, an hour or so. If not, a day or so. All poly is wipeable, but what you want is water based poly applied in light coats. I prefer to spray it because rubbing does sometimes mess up the glaze. Aerosol lacquer is also an option, which you'll see me use in many of my videos.
