    You forget to mention, early stages of cauliflower ear if you feel pain without the look of it then ice it straight away and reduce swelling

    I have a some cauli in my left ear. People can see it and sometimes people who know ask me if I wrestled or something. Back when I was training every day in the 2000’s we didn’t know about draining in my gym. Cauliflower ear was just part of training. I could’ve gone to the doc I guess. But anyway it healed up and it’s flat now so not super bulbous. Not everyone notices it and it doesn’t bother me much. If I got more cauliflower ear today I would drain it. But I’m proud of the cauli I got because it is something that reminds me of how hard I worked back then, and how I kept training and didn’t make any excuses. Obviously today I would get it drained. But I don’t regret the one I have.

    Slightly off topic. I once read a book about how during the battle of the bugle the Germans infiltrated a group of soldiers who were wearing US Uniforms and spoke perfect English to disrupt and spread Confusion among the US Forces. Although they Spoke fluid English they weren't familiar with the slang and sports events in the US so the GIs would challenge each other with questions like " Who won the World Series last year?" One of the GIs in the book stopped a Nazi Infiltrator by asking him "What Type of Vegatebles Grow in Madison Square Garden?" The correct answer of course was Cauliflower...

    Anybody remember the extra on Mark Kerr's documentary "The Smashing Machine"?
    They showed the draining of a cauliflower ear.
    The doctor doing it said if you don't get it treated it calcifies into a solid. When that happens you cannot have it drained you have to now get surgery to remove it and reform the ear.

    i think blood kinda "becomes" cartilage. If im correct same happens with bones, when you break one, blood inside will clog and eventualy becomes bone.
    By "becomes" i mean blood clog will be replaced with bone, so if there is no blood clog in that place, no new bone/cartilage will form there.

    +Kama Jiu-Jitsu , love the channel. You guys helped me out with gi conversion and belt ranking. In fact Ryan(I think took personal time on his Facebook to make suggestions. Greatly appreciated and uncommon as you guys grow. As a wrestler it's a little more common and we may have a general idea that is less obvious to jitz practitioners, even ones who spend more time on the mats. The injury more often comes from low singles and throwing yurt head into someone's knees or hard contact with bone. Then the injury is exacerbated by headlock escapes and normal head contact. Great information but for wrestlers it starts with violent contact more often. Then over time you desensitize the lesser flare ups, you start to wear the "badge of honor" and actively ignore. Don't do this. The shape of the ear is carefully shaped to direct sound for hearing. I'm turning fifty and my age related hearing loss is worsened by very moderate cauliflower. Listen to Dave, its part of rolling just like your nails and hygiene. Pay attention to your ears and save your hearing.

    While I don't think cauliflower ears look good aesthetically, I wouldn't want to get them "fixed". Seems to me you have to earn those ears, sort of a physical representation of your grappling journey to accompany your belt. But as with most things in life, to each their own.

    Is cauliflower ear mostly from bjj or muay-thai or both equally? Will cauliflower ear affect your hearing when you get older? Will it make it harder for you to clean your ears and keep up with your ear hygiene?

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  3 роки тому +2

      people react differently to impact on their ears. pretty much all grapplers/wrestlers confront cauliflower ear. i imagine it must affect hearing in some, especially those whose ear holes have closed up some.

      Heya, medical student here. If the swelling is in the canal, it can cause some full-frequency hearing loss (especially if it closes all the way). If the swelling is on the auricle (the outer, exposed part of the ear), it can cause some high-frequency loss, but it's pretty minor.

      My pleasure. In case you're curious, they think that our outer ear is shaped the way it is in order to detect high-frequency, "rustling" noises from predators in tall grasses. So no worries if those frequencies disappear somewhat! Not a lot of lions to look out for these days (at least in the US, lol).
