- In this video, we are replacing the seals of the vacuum pump of an E90 320i N46 engine. It's the same way for an N42 engine.
A common symptom for a faulty vacuum pump is the smell of burned oil in the cabin after braking. The vacuum within the pump is "consumed" while braking, oil leaks out of the pump, dripping on the hot manifold and evaporating there.
Preparatory Work:

Great man! I had that smell for about one year....changed vanos slenoids seals , valve cover seal, servo pup seals.... Change the name of the video or upload a copy of it with the name: "burnt oil smell on braking" or something like this to help others. God bless you man!!

Anmerkung: Die Pumpe pass nur wenn sie mit der Nockenwelle übereinstimmt.
Tipp: Man kann die Pumpe auch mit leichtem druck rein drücken und mit einer Ratsche die KW drehen dann springt sie rein. Letzter Punkt: Super Video. Vakuumpumpe erledigt jetzt kommt Ölfiltergehäuse :}

Habs gestern gemacht. War das ein gefummel. Man muss jede Schraube ertasten. Aber nach 2 Stunden war alles wieder drin 😄danke fürs Video
Danke für die ausführliche Anleitung! Mir hat diese sehr geholfen, die Demontage der Pumpe ist nicht ohne da die Platzverhältnisse sehr eng sind. An die "unsichtbaren" Schrauben kommt man von rechts besser dran. E46 N42

super Video! Wenn ihr die vakuumpumpe verdreht habt und sie nicht mehr in die nockenwellennut bekommt. einfach mit einem 22er etwas an der Kurbelwelle drehen bis die pumpe rein geht.

Hat alles geklappt.... Bis der Schlauch von der Pumpe gerissen ist (war aus so einem komischen Hartplastik). Hoffentlich ist der Tausch einfach. Ach ja und die eine Torx hatte durch das Öl beim Reinschrauben ein kaputtes Gewinde. Trotzdem super Anleitung!
Das Schöne ist, dass dieser Dichtungssatz an der Vakuumpumpe meines A4 B7 2.0 TFSI ebenfalls passt. Nur gibts den nicht bei Audi als Ersatzteil. Danke BMW😊

Hi, excellent video from you. I also have this smell of burnt oil, I will soon change the 2 seals but I also have another problem. I have a hard brake when I drive slowly, for example in town its brakes are very hard, this could also be because of the dead seals?

War eine sch***s-Arbeit, aber als Hobbyschrauber machbar. Ich hatte eine fast abgerissene Schraube, vorsichtig sein mit dem Alu-Kopf. Mit ein wenig friemeln ging die Pumpe auch wieder rein.
Undicht war die Dichtung zum Kopf, und das Ampel-Gestinke ist nun gebannt.

Servus Acure Tech, gibts einen Trick besser an die Pumpe zu kommen? Spritzschutzwand wegbauen? Komm mit der kleinen Ratsche ums verrecken nicht an die Schrauben. Würde es mit einem Maulschlüssel auch gehen? Erneut lg aus Bayern! 😀
Hallo,kleiner Tip. Habe heute an meinem N46B20 die Verschlussplattendichtung die unter der Vakuumpumpe liegt getauscht. Sehr fummelig. Vielleicht kommt davon ja auch mal ein Video.

heeft het een retourklep om te voorkomen dat motorolie naar de booster komt voor het geval die in de booster het begeeft, ik heb er hier een die me pijn deed om erachter te komen hoe de olie in de booster kwam, de rembooster letterlijk gevuld met olie, ik zou aannemen dat dit gebeurt tijdens het uitschakelen van de motor, omdat het vacuüm op de booster alle olie in de pomp zal zuigen als het geen klep heeft bij de uitlaat waar de vacuümslang op is aangesloten, kunt u dit alstublieft uitleggen
Hatte vor paar tagen ein hartes bremspedal beim bremsen. Eine stunde später war es weg da war das bremspedal wieder normal beim bremsen. Kann das auch an der vakuumpumpe liegen das sie in dem Moment nicht genug Unterdruck hatte weil vielleicht zu warm war oder so. Bin auch am überlegen die zu wechseln aber ich weiss nicht ob das die Ursache war. Danke schonmal

Vielen dank für das tolle Video. Hab erst die Pumpe eingebaut und mit 10 Nm angezogen. Da ich mir nicht sicher war ob der Drehmoment ausreichend ist, habe dein video gefunden und sehe da, dass die torxschrauben mit 8Nm angezogen werden müssen und ich hab mit 10Nm gemacht >_<
Ist das sehr schlimm oder kann man so lassen? :D

Hi, super Anleitung. Dass der Unterdruckschlauch der von der Vacuumpumpe zum Bremskraftverstärker geht, gefühlt sehr locker in der Pumpe sitzt ist normal? Ist da auch noch ein oring drin?
Und.. ich habe dass Gefühl dass bei mir nur ein kaum wahrnehmbares Vacuum im Motorbetrieb an Ende des vaccumschlauches zu spüren ist. (Demzufolge arbeitet wahrscheinlich der Bremskraftverstärker auch gerade nicht. )
Kann das sein, dass dieses längliche schwarze Kunststoffteil was den Unterdruck in den beiden Kammern erzeugt, zu viel Spiel hat und deshalb nicht genügend Unterdruck erzeugt? (bei 1:49 sieht das bei Dir auch rechts im Kreis sehr nach Spiel aus.. also normal?)

Bei mir tropft es so hart dass im Stand weißer Rauch aus dem Motorraum kommt. Jetzt kann ich nicht klar identifizieren woher es rausschiesst das ganze Öl. VDD oder Vakuumpumpe? Jemand ein Tipp?

Hi I saw another video and it said you need to put sealant around the o ring but I trust your tutorials much more so could you please let me know if there is a need for sealant as you didn't apply any. I don't think so because the sealing is supposed to be done by the o ring and not any sealant
Hi! Sealant is not needed. In fact, it can even be harmful if it's applied incorrectly, as excess can get into the pump.
The reason why many people use sealant additionally is that the pump can end up warped so that the cover does not fit 100% anymore. In this case, the sealant can help to prevent oil loss. However, the pump will no longer have full performance, because if the space between the pump rotor and the cover increases, the vacuum will be less strong.
I suggest to use the o-rings as is and if they do not solve the problem, replace the pump altogether. Do not save on brake system parts.
@@AcureusCom wow thanks for the fast reply, I hugely appreciate your help, you are amazing and also I wanted to mention that for the valve cover gasket it isnt necessary to use drei bind sealant, you can use any sensor safe sealant that works on metal and plastic, I used loctite si 5990 which is a copper gasket sealer and it seals up to heats at 360 degrees unlike the 250 from drei bind and reason I mention this is because drei bind is so expensive, here in ireland it is 40 euro to buy online and loctite si 5990 is jus 7.20 euro, so if you ever do a valve cover gasket job again you can mention that because it can save lots of money and I confirmed this as being a better alternative from my cousin who works as a manager at BMW in naas here in ireland ☺️😀, and again thank you so much for your help ♥️
Is it necessary any special procedure about the brakes after replacing the gaskets and reinstalling the pump back?
No, nothing additional needed!
How much torque for the vacuum pump?
Hey, habe die Dichtung gewechselt nachdem es wie beschrieben nach öl gestunken hat, danach war auch alles gut. Leider ist nun nach ca. 5tkm ein Klackern im Stand aufgetaucht, welches jetzt relativ laut ist. Dieses wird wenn der Motor warm wird lauter, wenn man dann 1-2 mal die Bremse kräftig tritt verschwindet es kurz und ist nach ein paar Sekunden wieder da. Außerdem lässt sich die Bremse trotz laufendem Motor aufpumpe, also nach mehrmaligem treten lässt sich das Bremspedal nicht mehr richtig durch treten.
Könnte hier die Vakuumpumpe defekt sein? Wenn ja welchen Hersteller würdest du beim Austausch empfehlen?(Mir wurde bisher Febi Bilstein empfohlen von einem Kollegen)
Und könnte der Bremskraftverstärker ebenfalls defekt sein?

I've changed the two o-rings of the vacuum pump, but it stills leaking oil on the smaller o-ring.
Shoud I put some sealant on the smaller o-ring or on the vacuum pup where it fits to engine?
I wouldn't do that if I were you. The sealant might get inside the timing drive and clog something up.
If there are still leaks after you've renewed the o-rings, you probably need to get a new vacuum pump. :/
Weiß jemand, ob es beim N43 Motor (E87 120i) genauso ist und das Dichtungskit auch passt?
Wie ist das hier auch noch mit ein wenig Bondex? Bin bei der Theamtik schon mehrmals darauf gestoßen.
Hat so eine undichte Pumpe noch gefährlichere Nachteile als unangenehmen Geruch und ein bisschen Ölverbrauch? Glaube ich habe dieses Problem aber bin noch am überlegen ob ich mir das echt antun will

Is there a need to disconnect the battery for this and the valve cover replacement? I always used to on my E46 but the whole battery sensor thing has me worried on the E87.
Can be done without disconnecting the battery (simply disconnecting is no problem with IBS though )
Bei mir sind heute morgen Die ABS und DIe beiden DSC leuchen angegengen füre 300m...glaub es wird zeit die gleich mal zu wechseln :D
Das ist allerdings eher ein Hinweis auf eine schwächelnde Batterie als auf eine undichte Vakuumpumpe. :)

The kit 11668626471 comes with both the o-ring for the pump itself and the o-ring between pump and cylinder head? Also would you mind providing a little more detail on the position of the pump around 0:56 in the video...what do we have to be careful of here to avoid valve cover removal
Hello, exactly, the kit contains both o-rings. The pump is turned by the camshaft, so if the connector part of the pump turns (it will likely happen), you have three options:
1, Remove the valve cover so that you can check how the pump connector needs to be rotated to fit
2, Try out different connector rotations until it fits
3, User Christoph Peters suggested a good method in the comments: Turn the crankshaft using an SW-22 until the pump fits.
@@AcureusCom Thank you!! I have a leak at the back of the engine that seems to be the vacuum pump, but was planning to do the valve cover gasket at the same time because of the pump refitting issues. With this information I will first repair the pump and see if it cures my leak. Engine has 54,000 km (but is 11 years old) so I think the seals may be failing with age rather than distance.

Die angegeben Teilenummer ist für den Innenraumfilter! Die richtige wäre: 11668626471. Ich würde zu einer Dichtung aus Viton (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viton) raten, die hält länger als die originale. Gibts zum Beispiel hier:

Bei den Händlern bei denen ich nachgeschaut habe (zB Leebmann24) ist das Dichtungskit auch nach wie vor original erhältlich.
Eine Frage -war bei Dir der Anschluss auch locker? Bei mir dreht sich der ganze Anschluss rundum somit ist die Schelle nicht zu befestigen?
Seitliches Spiel wäre schlecht. Die Luftdichtigkeit ist wichtig. Dass sich die Pumpe im Schlauch drehen lässt, ist nicht ungewöhnlich. Wenn das völlig ohne Kraft geht, dann ist allerdings fraglich, ob der Schlauch noch luftdicht hält.

Nein, nicht nötig. Die Pumpe ist relativ weit oben am Motor; wenn das Auto nicht unmittelbar davor bewegt wurde hält sich die Ölmenge in Grenzen.
wollte mich die woche mal dransetzen. irgendeinen tipp, dass sich die nase nicht verdreht bzw. kann bringt es was, wenn ich das irgendwie markiere? sollte sie nicht mehr passen, funktioniert es, wenn ich den steg um 180° drehe und sie dann irgendwann einrastet oder verstellt sich da irgendwas a la "steuerzeiten" ?
Da verstellt sich nichts; du kannst auch langsam an der Kurbelwelle drehen (im Uhrzeigersinn am Schwingungsdämpfer), bis es einrastet.

Hab eine BMW e91 320i touring Bj. 2006.
Ölfiltergehäuse Dichtungen alle erneut Orginal BMW mit neue Schrauben aber die drei Schrauben die am Motorblock befestigt wird weiß nicht mit wie viel Nm Drehmoment Ziehung es kommt immer wieder Öl raus .

Yes, they are minimally bigger.
@@AcureusCom yes it's true however the pump side brand from Elring to match OEM part number was too big to fit. Went to BMW dealer and had to buy their kit which fitted perfect. Job done and valve cover replaced with no leaks after a few km test drive. Thanks for your tutorials!! Couldn't have done it with out them.

I need to now what you mean with Tighening torques. Pass 1 and 2?
First, you tighten all the screws with 5Nm, so that the sealing is secured and sits correctly. Then you tighten all screws with 8 Nm to finish it :)

Nein. Beim N46 ist die Ursache für Ölrauch fast immer Ventilschaftdichtung.

I'm sorry if I'm repeating what some one has already said but in another lang... This repair will not stop oil from entering the pump as the guy only replaced the external seals and did not replace the seal on the shaft of the pump which is where the oil gets sucked from motor to inside the pump.
The oil has to "enter the pump" for it to work correctly. I am replacing the seal for the engine pump connection at about 2:20 .

Ich hab die Pumpe heute neu abgedichtet. Dabei habe ich festgestellt, dass bereits der neue Dichtungssatz verbaut war.
Leider habe ich immer noch die Symptome. Also Geruch von Öl wenn man an der Ampel steht.
Hast du eine Idee was es sein könnte.

David Raudonat Ja, ist normal, dass in der Pumpe Öl ist. Nächster Kandidat wäre Ventildeckeldichtung; ist da alles dicht im Bereich vom Krümmer?
AcureTech erst mal Danke für die schnelle Antwort! Ja, die hab ich erst kürzlich gemacht. Die ist dicht. Was noch undicht ist, ist die Dichtung am Ölfiltergehäuse. Könnte das daher kommen?
Kommt darauf an, "wie" das Öl riecht. Wenn das Öl verbrannt riecht, muss es auf ein sehr heißes Teil tropfen, in dem Fall ist Ölfiltergehäuse unwahrscheinlich. Fühlte sich die Rückseite des Motors trotz korrekt gedichteter Pumpe ölig an? Wenn ja, ist möglicherweise die Pumpe verzogen.

Ich war einfach zu ungeduldig. Bin heute eine längere Strecke gefahren und siehe da. Der Geruch ist weg. Da war vermutlich noch Öl von defekt bzw ein und Ausbau.

Hallo, habe die Vakuumpumpe (bmw e90 320i n46)bei der Werkstatt meines Vertrauens machen lassen samt der Ventildeckeldichtung, aber muss feststellen das er hinten wieder sift Bereich Pumpe werde das natürlich reklamieren, Hast du eine Idee wie so zustande kommen könnte?

Möglicherweise ist der Deckel verzogen.
@@AcureusCom hm scheisse hoffe echt das sie nur die falschen Dichtungen also wieder glatte verwendet haben bzw falschluft zieht er nicht? Was bei einer Verformung ja nicht untypisch wäre oder.
Bzw es mucht beim bremsen ja davor auch

Hey, bei mir ist die Vakuumpumpe ebenfalls undicht, allerdings gibt sie auch ab und zu nach längeren Fahrten ein klopfendes Geräusch von sich, 1 zu 1 wie in diesem Video hier : ua-cam.com/video/OwPlORt5RC8/v-deo.html . Meinst du, dass neue Dichtungen ausreichen, oder ist das schon ein Zeichen dafür, dass die Vakuumpumpe an sich neu muss? Hab mal den Unterdruckschlauch am Bremskraftverstärker abgezogen, da war jedenfalls kein Öl dran, also ölt sie nicht nach innen.
Hi, in der Vakuumpumpe muss Öl sein, ansonsten wird sie nicht geschmiert und geht kaputt. Wenn die Vakuumpumpe klopft ist sie höchstwahrscheinlich hinüber und muss getauscht werden. :/
Danke für die Antwort :) Hatte mich glaub ich etwas unklar ausgedrückt, dass in der Vakuumpumpe Öl sein muss war mir schon klar, ich hatte nur auch schon von Fällen gehört, wo die Vakuumpumpe so undicht war, dass Öl durch den Unterdruckschlauch zum Bremskraftverstärker gelangt, das ist jedenfalls bei mir noch nicht der Fall.
Werde das mal weiter im Auge behalten und schauen ob ich es erstmal mit den Dichtungen versuche oder lieber direkt ne neue Pumpe kaufe.
hello, i bought orginal OEM:11668626471 set , and to day i remove the vacuum , the new gasket is a little thinner than the old gasket..and i used another universal gasket (I did not use the original seal) şimdi daha fazla vakum sızıntısı var ... is 11668626471 , I wonder if the new seal is different from the old ? or did I get the wrong seal set ? my car is n42b20 engine ...if you can help me , i remove vacuum again , and i will use the OEM:11668626471.. If the seals were of different size, you likely got the wrong seal kit, which causes the increased leak. I would use the original ones.
Passiert was wenn undicht ist? Ich kann mit diese Geruch Leben! Die Werkstätte verlangen mindestens 500€!
Das ist schon etwas übertrieben im Preis. Bei einer geringen Undichtigkeit ist das nicht weiter ein Problem. Bei einer großen Undichtigkeit könnte die Pumpe Probleme bekommen, Unterdruck aufzubauen. In dem Fall könnte der Bremskraftverstärker weniger stark unterstützen.
