Karl was World Party. He played all the instruments on this album. He played guitar, bass, drums, synths, mixed and produced the album and this song. He only had a few guest appearances from members of the Waterboys to play sax.

Karl, I grew up on the Beatles, Dylan, Jimi and I know you did, and you took your influences and crafted them into your own beautiful art of music. Intelligent, perceptive and true all qualities I deeply resonate with. RIP my brother, my muse at times and a soundtrack I loved listening to whenever travelling.

    Rest in peace, Karl.
Karl Wallinger, surely one of Britain’s greatest musicians and songwriters, certainly up there with the best, but criminally underrated. Okay, that’s not everyone’s fault. Just five albums in 35 years (and of course, several stunning B-sides) hard to keep your name going, but he certainly could write a tune. I mean, number one with "She’s the One". Still, nobody seems to realise it was written by him. It would’ve been nice of Robbie to have mentioned him at the BRITs when he won best song.
Back in the 90s, me and my girl Jane saw World Party play live on several occasions. They were “our band” and our favourite song together was Love Street from the Goodbye Jumbo masterpiece.
That’s one of many moments since we spoke about when I first met Karl in February 2021. He was on holiday in Suffolk. I was doing a bit of work at a holiday village there and I looked up, and there was Karl with his family. His wife, Suzie and children, Louis and Nancy. I’d only just seen World Party a few months before at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. It was certainly one of the best gigs I had seen him play. When Karl and the kids were out playing golf, Suzie and I chatted about Karl’s work and the Shepherd’s Bush concert and many other things. She also told me that Carl had recorded his version of the complete White album, using exactly the same microphones as the Beatles did. It was funny when Karl found out I was a World Party fan he said we should have you taken out and stuffed! Later that weekend on that very same holiday Karl famously suffered a massive brain aneurysm. I only found out several weeks later.
We know that he disappeared, into more even obscurity, and spent a few years recovering. Still making music, but none of us were able to listen to it. Fast forward a few years to 2012, and on November 2, my friend Nick and I walked round the back of the Royal Albert Hall, where World Party were playing their reunion spectacle in front of the packed house and cameras. Who is the first person we bumped into smoking a quick fag by the back door? Yes, it was Mr. Wallinger. We had a good chat with him. He offered me a fag. I presume he was trying to calm his nerves before going on stage to such a large audience. Then bizarrely, the comedian and talk-show host Clive Anderson turned up, and we were all standing around having a chat. Wished him luck and said our goodbyes.
The last time I saw Karl perform was in Cambridge at the Junction, I think it was the following year. Possibly April 2013. His son Louis was selling merchandise. Another stellar performance by his dad and the rest of the band, of course. And that was it. And I fell back alone.
What a beautiful soul. Taken away from us too soon, but when you’ve written a great song, it’s been written forever, it cannot be unwritten. Just like a film star, you are now immortal. You’ve left your legacy imprinted and recorded.
Thoughts go out to his friends and family. You’ll be greatly missed. You are a legend.
    Stephen Dawson

    • @stefanconradsson
      @stefanconradsson 10 місяців тому

Thanks man, this is beautifully written. Never got to see him play live, but I lived through some rough times about 20 years ago, and those five World Party albums kept me sane. I sort of understood that this was a gentle soul by listening to his music. I heard about the aneurysm in 2001, yet I always harboured a hope that he would one day, once again, tap into that creative wellspring that was so strong and overflowing.
During the lockdowns, I revisited all those albums again in pure desperation. Losing Karl Wallinger hurts, but I guess I'll do what I always do during hard times; take a deep dive into those five albums and swim there for a while.
Take care Stephen, and thanks for sharing!
      Cheers 🍺

I was working as a burned out disc jockey in the mid-late 80's out in Melbourne (Australia) when one night the request line got busy. The one song the kids wanted to hear was the latest Countdown (pop show in Australia) video hit titled ''Ship Of Fools'' by a band called World Party. Understanding the usual taste of Countdown kids and the band's name sounding rather festive (''everybody have a world party tonight, everybody Wang Chung tonight!''), I took the chance and played what was to be one of my favourite 80's songs by what would become one of my favourite artists.
The previous year the same bunch of kids had asked me to play a song called ''The Whole Of The Moon'' by a band called Waterboys. That song is now one of my all-time favourites.
    Those kids had good judgement.

Hi Cynthia and Chris. Dave from London. So sorry about Karl, but I agree this is a terrific song from World Party - like others, I'd also recommend Put The Message In The Box. BTW, the pianist in the video is Guy Chambers, I believe, who was one of the UK's most successful and prolific songwriters in the 90s and beyond, working most famously with Robbie Williams (and also recommending Karl's song She's The One to Robbie, who had a number one hit with it). My favourite Guy Chambers song is Out of The Blue by Aussie singer/actor Delta Goodrem.

Glad you liked it. This was the first song I ever heard from World Party but I suspect that is true for most people. They hit it big time in 1993 with the album 'Bang!' which has theutterly lovely 'Is It Like Today?' - well worth a listen. But the most well known song is 'She's The One' as covered by Robbie Willams - caused a bit of a rumpus between them as Robbie sometimes claimed to have written it, and Karl was ill at the time - didn't go down well, he may have used strong language.

The “Goodbye Jumbo” album from 1990 is generally considered the best of the five he released as “World Party”, but they are all very, very good. I personally hold the 1993 album “BANG!” as his best, but that's because it played a role during a critical time of my life. It was a lifesaver.
All the albums are filled with unique catchy pop euphoria, stunning choruses and beautiful arrangements. It is a mystery that only four of his songs were hits on the charts, as all albums are overflowing with gorgeous melodies. Karl Wallinger and his World Party band were big during the decade of the nineties but are sadly forgotten today.
Thanks for paying respects to the unique pop genius Karl Wallinger.

In 1985, Countdown played the video for ''The Whole Of The Moon'' by The Waterboys and the Countdown kids pushed it into the Australian Top 20.
Australia was the only place that took notice of ''The Whole Of The Moon'' in 1985. Trust me on this one. Having some friends in the UK, I can confirm they barely knew the song prior to 1988 or 89.
Edit: _The song reached # 26 in the UK upon initial release in 1985, so obviously I was giving my country a little too much credit. My bad._
Same thing happened for World Party's ''Ship Of Fools''. It got played on Countdown and the kids did what they had been doing for a decade at to that point. They begged stations to play it, and the song got to # 4 on the Australian charts.
I honestly thought the entire world knew this song. I was waiting for you guys to show signs of recognition, but no.... Strange!
Other bummer British songs of the 80's I would include with this one are Fine Young Cannibals 'Blue', and The Stranglers 'Always The Sun'.
One song I would love to request is Black ''Wonderful Life''. I used to cry when listening to that song. I love me some sad songs.

I was aware of The Whole Of The Moon in 1985, but I don't think it was a UK hit until 1991.
Black is a great choice for C&C to look into: not just Wonderful Life, but Sweetest Smile, Paradise and many other songs.

@@jonathancole833 I'm sure it was known to many British people before 1991, but I think it was known by more Aussies in 1985 by virtue of its chart success over here.
A little strange that ''Whole Of The Moon'' should only begin charting in the UK in 1991.

@@jonathancole833 It made the top 30 here in the UK first time round, but really big in 91.
As for Black, top choice. I always loved the melodrama of "Your a big Girl Now" and the Duet with Sam Brown (Fly up to the moon) is a good-un as well.

@VanessaSun-ls2kr A couple of late night bars in Liverpool used to play " Moon" on the stroke of midnight and people would go crazy this would be 1986-87 and in 1986 the Waterboys supported both U2 and Simple Minds on huge stadium/ arena tours of Britain and Ireland so the song was very well known in the UK at this time.

"Ship of Fools" reached #27 in America, #5 on the Mainstream Rock Chart, so it was somewhat popular here. I only remember one other song, "Way Down Now." When that came out, they played both of those songs on Saturday Night Live, even though "Ship of Fools" was 3 or 4 years old at that point. I remember being impressed with that performance.

'Is It Like Today' is also _my_ suggestion! I loved that song right away when I first heard it around '94, and went and bought the 'Bang!' album it's from soon after - and then felt rather disappointed by most of its other songs being in quite a different, more 'clubby' style.
World Party's drummer also was in Robbie Williams' band 🙂
