He started the solo between the 2nd and 3rd beat which made it catch you offguard and made you go woah IDK if it was intentional or not but he is a gifted musician
You are right. Jazz music and the blues emphasize the "off" or "up" beat in the music. It is a very unique characteristic that even influenced pop, rock and many other kinds of music. That is what gives it the groove!
Over the years, I've been in the camp for songs like Taking on Water, Wasted Time, The Hurt to somehow make a resurgence onto a studio album - though hopeless this may be. That said, I really think that this could fit on the upcoming Fall 2016 album.
Actually he is going to release an album next year called "Zero" which has a lot of unreleased tracks from his previous albums. Google John Mayer Zero album and you should find it :)
wow, amazing! thanks for posting - i'm locked on to your channel now. Hope his throat op went well the other week and he's able to complete the new album soon. Got to say my guitar playing hit new levels only cos of this one man. JM rules my musical brain.
This is a song by Marvin Gaye if you all were wondering why he hasn't put it on a CD or sold it or anything, but he just redid it. I love this version though as well as the original.
@MagneticandPolar i agree. i think his next album should be like this. he kind of has a justin timberlake singing vibe here but its good. i really like "you already are to me" also. he should put this and that song on there
+Guy Tal He's using an octave-up fuzz pedal. I have the fulltone octafuzz and I'm able to get pretty damn close to this tone. I also have an EHX soul food running at the same time.
+Guy Tal He does use a octafuzz but he also uses a Pete Cornish Pedal called an NG-2. It's a fuzz pedal and its the sound he gets for the song Crossroads on his Battle Studies record. I bet he's using the NG-2 here. Tube screamer thrown in for the solo. Maybe the Marshall blues breaker. He changes it up a lot
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT OFF BEAT ?! Hahahahaha. Mayer had released 4 studio albums by this time. He's gone to berklee, won grammy's and here you come online, some squat who thinks he's an expert and say "off beat" hahahahahahahaha. And by the way it's not off beat :)
Oh man, imagine JM, Pino and Steve Jordan ripping into this as a trio jam live. Soooo good!
They do
One day the Trio will roll again! I will be front row
@@handsolo1546 I’m still holding out hope for that!

id say intentional :) after all, good musicians insist on clapping on 2&4, clapping on 1&3 is “pederstrian”
This song has been on repeat everyday since I found it! I'm speechless!
That solo - Clapton/SRV sweet combination.
that solo at the ending is just amazingly good!!
You are right. Jazz music and the blues emphasize the "off" or "up" beat in the music. It is a very unique characteristic that even influenced pop, rock and many other kinds of music. That is what gives it the groove!
Never heard it put this way, but I agree. Reggae is another genre that fits.
John always has that one song he enjoys covering. Sounds great!
I like the cover he did live with DJ Logic.
i think i just like, idk how to explain the feeling i got when the guitar came in, wow!!! amazing
Mayer has a feel for the blues!
Over the years, I've been in the camp for songs like Taking on Water, Wasted Time, The Hurt to somehow make a resurgence onto a studio album - though hopeless this may be. That said, I really think that this could fit on the upcoming Fall 2016 album.
He'll probably will release it early 2017 instead of Fall 2016... :(
Actually he is going to release an album next year called "Zero" which has a lot of unreleased tracks from his previous albums. Google John Mayer Zero album and you should find it :)

John Mayer + Marvin Gaye , can't get any better than this
@PhernMusic
he didn't get it from a drum machine. he got it from a Billy Martin drum beats CD. you can hear samples of all of his beats on amazon
this has such an awesome vibe. 3:12 - monster lick!
how can i dowload this? this is just FANTASTIC!
@gabrieltsiry probably his pete cornish fuzz. sounds alot like crossroads in that aspect
the drums pop out here, Steve Jordan would go insane here
This guy!!!!
@MagneticandPolar i agree. i think his next album should be like this. he kind of has a justin timberlake singing vibe here but its good. i really like "you already are to me" also. he should put this and that song on there
@BryceShuster it's a drum machine, but he is an amazing drummer
Sounds really good. But I recommend you see this same cover from "The Mayfield Four" Myles Kennedy´s voice is just amazing on that one.
@25Ragz Chill out bro, sick version as in good.. Wow
Awesome! loved it!
Nailed It Dude ! haha

Check: 2:26
I love this muuuuuuuusic! (L)
MUCH RESPECT TO MARVIN GAYE!!!!
Marvin Gaye! It's a good direction for John. Actually, anything he does is perfection. I LOVE JOHN MAYER.
Totally different feel at 1.25x speed! A little quick but good groove
To all the guitar players out there, do you know what pedal is John using to achieve this guitar tone?
+Guy Tal He's using an octave-up fuzz pedal. I have the fulltone octafuzz and I'm able to get pretty damn close to this tone. I also have an EHX soul food running at the same time.
+Guy Tal he's probably using the octavia, i've seen it on some pictures of his pedalboard :D
+Tristen Caleb Also don't forget a strat with big dippers and a two rock. MAJOR piece of his tone.
I use an Octafuzz by Fulltone in my John Mayer tribute band and that works pretty good.
Do you know where i can get this on mp3?
Just google ‘yt to mp3 converter’
this song makes the fucked up day at work easier
@jross286
What's that other song you mentioned? "You already are to me"? Where can I hear it?
@julienarrijs he said he used a drum machine haha
Only thing I'll add is did he do this bc it's a great tune or bc it'd get him "A Pass?"
damn that's a low keyboard bass xD When it strikes it's like a million octaves down xD
yeah! like free fallin' for example
Fuckin wild home production!
And by the way it's not off beat :)
ca c'est du bon rythm ce mec et un dieu...
This is just incredible. Better than the original because of the guitar
