Picked up the 4k Criterion on release day here in the US. The upgrade is so stunning and beautiful! I'm at a loss for words. This might be my second favorite film now, Barry Lyndon still holds the #1 spot. Christmas came early for us cinephiles :)
May I ask if the criterion one is this one? I'm very confused at this moment with this info. I have seen a different image of another edition with the writing "The criterion collection" but it seems to be in Blue-Ray but not 4K. This one's seems to be the limited and better quality one... but I'm not even sure
@lordabbadon2107 both 4k options are of the same quality. Criterion is distributing the US version and Curzon the UK. Some of the bonus content is found on the secondary disc of both versions which is a blu ray disc. I hope that helps!
This movie will always hold a special place for me-it was the first Criterion I ever owned, gifted to me by one of my best friends, and it sparked my interest in criterion for life!
I have just purchased this to add to the Wenders boxset. On top of the picture “adjustments” there are enough extras/booklet to double dip. Excellent review. 😁
Woo hoo a video on Bela Tarr. Just picked up Werchmeister harmonies. Will get Paris Texas from Criterion at the next sale. We are having a French Film Friday Festival over here. Thanks Elliot.
@@ElliotCoen Hey Elliot. My partner loves movies but had a fairly narrow experience. I showed her Le Samurai and Man on a Train she loved them. I then suggested that each Friday we have a French film and I'd try and curate something different each week. Elizabeth (my partner) has loved the experience with her fave being the most recent. We started in September and here are the films in order we watched them. Our favorite is Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Rififi The 400 Blows A Man Escaped Breathless Girl on the Bridge Portrait of a Lady on Fire Wages of Fear Le Doulos Voyage Dans La Lune (1902) Arrivee D'Un Train La Clotat (1895) Out of Season Rules of the Game We have 4 more to watch including Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Playtime, Army of Shadows and Jules et Jim. Then we are going to repeat either a from Japan or the UK.
I just picked up a new bluray release here in Australia from Madman films. It's a beautiful boxset too, but the cover art features Harry Dean Stanton. The bluray is from the new 4k restoration, so I think I'll be quite happy with it
I have this on order and it's due to arrive early next week. I just blind bought Werckmeister Harmonies and The Turin Horse (which was on offer) and really looking forward to gettinng stuck in to them.
I have the Wenders Curzon Boxset which I love, but was aware criticism of Paris Texas disc.So replaced that with the Arthaus/Studio Canal Blu Ray which is excellent.Your review has tempted me to consider purchase, multiple copies of a title not something me or my wallet would normally do.😮
Picked up the DVD 12+ years ago blind at a B&N sale due to the striking cover art on the Criterion edition and then years later I got the Blu-ray and now it’s looking it maybe time to upgrade once again! I just wish I could have caught one of the theatrical screenings of this new restoration 🤦🏻♂️
This is my favorite film of all time! I was thinking of getting the Criterion 4K (I already have their Blu Ray) but I think I’m gonna get this Curzon edition instead.
I have the Curzon Blu-ray, which I thought was from a 4K restoration, is this a new/different restoration ? I mean I have a copy of the 4K on order anyway so I’ll find out in a few days I guess. Edit: night and day difference between the 2022 Blu Ray and the 4K. Not disappointed!
By the 1980's I had grown bored with what Hollywood was releasing and was hungry for something radically different. Luckily there was an art theatre in the Yale, New Haven area that it I didn't know existed until the therapist I was seeing at the time tipped me off. The first film I saw there was Blood Simple. It immediately became my oasis from the Hollywood mediocrity. When I saw Paris, Texas I was absolutely blown away. It was unlike anything I had seen before. There was no great story or any action sequences---the antithesis of the Hollywood "blockbusters" that I came to loathe. This was a quiet little story about a man who is reintroduced to a son he abandoned many years ago. One of the most heartbreaking lines is when he is told that he's been gone for six years. "Is that a long time? " he asks, and his brother answers, "It is for a little boy." Then he sets to reunite his son with his mother who has also disappeared from the boy's life. Harry Dean Stanton is one of the great character actors and unfortunately never got many lead roles (Repo Man leaps to mind) and gives a subtle but brilliant performance. The monologue towards the end of the film with his ex-wife is stunning. He told Wim Wenders that he was unsure about pulling off such a long piece of dialogue, but whatever fears he had never effected his performance. Immediately after watching the film I bought the soundtrack. The Ry Cooder score is absolutely haunting. I still own that vinyl copy. I bought the Criterion Collection release. I don't feel the need to upgrade, which would also require buying a new player.
Great review. Thanks for the early impression. Mine should arrive in a few days. Do you know if it has the Original Audio besides the 5.1 remix as well?
Picture quality destroys the old Criterion release and is a huge improvement on the Curzon blu-ray, but the 5.1 track is a downgrade as it is broken on the Curzon 4k release and is just another presentation of the mono track for some reason. No real 5.1 like on prior releases.
Question: Is it on a 100 gig disc. Which one should I purchase? Criterion or curzon? Personally, I like the look of the curzon. The Criterion is the same as the old blu ray, nothing special.
Elliot they have botched the 5.1 track on this release. This is not the proper 5.1 remix that was on the Criterion blu-ray or previous Curzon blu-ray. Instead the 5.1 is just a mono track in a 5.1 container. Audio wise it is a huge downgrade from previous blu-ray releases. The picture is a huge improvement as the encoding on the prior Curzon blu-ray release was atrocious. But the audio is broken and not the real 5.1 remix track. This is a serious issue.
Comparing the new 4K to the master used for the late 80s through 90s releases shows it to be significantly revisionist in its colour timing. 35mm print screenings only confirm this. Also, perhaps most offensively, they completely changed the font in the main title! This isn't a restoration.
Whilst the ratings logo can be put on the J Card, it's a statutory requirement under the Video Recordings Act. The Americans moan about these ratings- even though the German ones are more severe- but the moans they have are usually because 'their' film hasn't been released in the U.S because it's the only country in the world and they remain mostly insular.
I tried to love it, I really did....no, I just can't (even though I own a unique photobook "Written in the West" which consists of photographs Wenders did while scouting for movie locations)
Loved the soundtrack and the look of the film , but found Harry Dean Stantons character spectacularly unsympathetic so just couldn't engage with the film more broadly. I'm sure he played the character as written so that's no criticism of the performance but its just not a film I could every imagine putting myself thru again.
My main problem with this movie is the title, which is misguiding, misleading even. First time watching it I thought it was going to be a movie about Paris, and then it wasn't and felt cheated. Sure it's about a town in Texas called Paris, but they could have chosen any of a 1000 names of villages available in Texas, so they only chose that to invoke something else. Maybe you think this is petty, but the title of this movie is deliberatly very particular.
Thanks for watching! You can buy this Paris, Texas 4K edition here - amzn.to/4inJ4ji
Thanks so much for this detailed review, Elliot. I'm considering picking up this release over the Criterion
Thanks for watching, DJ! I do want to see how the Criterion compares and if there are any noticeable differences.
Love this film! I’ve heard the Criterion 4k is pretty lackluster so hearing this release is good made my day!

I like to get a bit creative every now and then!
Is the color timing on this identical to the Criterion release?
The 4K discs will look the same. The standard Blu-ray that comes with the Criterion is the earlier HD restoration

Curzon not putting logos on their outside is great, but then they put the text on their spines "the wrong way"...

I feel like they should not have used her on the front cover of the video as it ruins the surprise later in the film.
I've got the criterion 4k of this and no country coming next week both are blind buy's for me
Nothing against this release. But IMO artwork on Criterion is better.
