Zio Pier Such a dope fuse...Mr. Pastorious was absolutely brilliant...and Mrs. Joni Mitchell? Well, it goes without saying that she is an amazing storyteller/songwriter!! 7 thumbs up for your pairing sir!
Heard this on NPR a few days ago. Kept waking up in the morning with it in my head. I finally found it, and now I'm forever screwed. Thanks, Esperanza.
Love this stuff...kind of progressive, expressive, impressionistic, in the fine tradition of Joni Mitchell, Joan Armatrading and Cassandra Wilson...but with just a little more edge...nice!
I invited a friend and by song 2 she turned around and said "I don't get it, it's not my style"! and ran away never to be seen again. Thank God, cause I was then able to just enjoy without her vibe and Esperanza took me places I've never been before in my 50 + year musical life. She is friggin brilliant! I loved it and the album. BTW the girl doesn't communicate with me anymore. I think I'm on a different level and she's 30 years younger than me. : )
Pete, age is not the point. That girl just has no the sensibility to feel the song. For example: I am 21 y o. And my neighbor son, who is 8 years old loves Esperanza(my influence haha). You will find someone who has the soul and your tune ! Kisses!
Even though they're structured like pop songs, they're spiky and different. D+Evolution is hard to get into, it took me several plays on random shuffle to get. I now think it's the best record in years and the band is one of the top power trios OF ALL TIME.
Esperanza is an island in the middle of a big ocean. In parallel, she show us, the way of the future of new music. Big passion in this voice and great band.
Oh. My. WHOAAA!! There is nothing to not LOVE in this performance (full circle beyond beautiful)!!! Thank you, Chrissie Loftus for turning me on to this funky awesomeness!!!
Andrei Cherascu. I agree with you. I declare myself a true fan an admirer of her work. What people may consider weird I consider another extension of her talent. Lets enjoy!!
Ooh Chile, I hear many inusruments and tempos all at once, and in their own timing. The lick of each instrument could be its own song. I Love the lyrics. This is a masterpiece. New age Groovy
+Cam L. is it really? Its rather hard to categorised it, there's hardly any improv here I love her previous work she is great but this over-intellectualized I would get just one big headache after 2hour concert.
+texbls You shouldn't think of it as a headache ;) Just be like: "Wow! That was weird... wait.. they're still perfectly perfect... wait.. WOWWHATWASTHAT??... shit... ooooh there again.." And stay with a stupid curious smile all along x)
+texbls I don't find it over-intellectualized. I find this this song particularly mainly very soulful. But this song is pretty different and so it took me a couple of listens to start feeling it.
Esperanza is a real artist! She's tracing her path. Just that. Original and unexpected, and after a few hearings a real delight... awkard harmonies and melodies, but a real soul. Beautiful arrangements with the two back vocals, and a jazz guitarist. A kind of Kate Bush meeting Wayne Shorter.
+Kandelise Kandle. Some songs on her new LP do remind me of Kate Bush as well as the obvious mid 70's Joni M. influences plus 70's King Crimson, Funkadelic, Hendrix et al.
+MisterTMH I have been storing up all the artists people say this reminds them of/the influences etc. Here we go: Kate Bush(The funk, right?) Joni, Radiohead, Prince, Funkadelic, King Crimson, Steely Dan, Hendrix, Wayne Shorter.... there MUST be some more to add..... I must have missed someone out, yes? Little Mix, maybe? Anybody else?
Kate Bush is not Funk , she is Progressive rock or art rock. I can also hear a bit of Jaco Patorius era Weather Report in the new Esperanza LP. But mainly It is Joni M. circa '74/'75 backed by King Crimson circa '74/'75.
+MisterTMH Kate Bush, not Funk? You don't say! I met Kate briefly once and I wonder what she would say her music was? Whatever, thanks for adding to the list; Jaco Pastorius. Any more, someone?
@PCgameplaz - It's talent, dedication to the art of music, and whole heap of heart and soul -- Esperanza and Emily, both. What have you to offer aside from negative comments?!
@PCgameplaz I hope one day you can figure out why your own opinion isn't good enough for you, so you no longer feel the need to project it onto others. Music is subjective. I hope you enjoy your taste but leave the rest for the rest of us
they say music is currently dumbing down, according to the math, when the sum of our music history is analyzed by supercomputers, its so refreshingto see folks rebel
Beauty - undefined and with a substance so magical and beyond words, Intelligence - in the purest form of mind to see the things I this world and in this life for what they areWisdom - Amongst the highest and purest of Transcendence, Like Streaming Lush Waters In an arid hot desert, So scarce and so sacred in these Days.=Poetry In My Heart and My Soul
wow wait what the is that girl esperanza? I liked ms Spalding since 07 just happen to fall of my radar and I run into this video the girl is deff cute btw
JESUS IS LORD. Philippians 2:9-11. Not just an idea. If you are in "rebellion" TO GOD THE FATHER WHO SENT HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON TO SAVE Us from Our sins WHEN HE DIED ON THE CROSS FOR Us? Then the question is, Are you betraying JESUS BY CONTINUING to follow the devil and your own wicked mindset, OR ARE You FOLLOWING THE KING OF KINGS AND THE LORD OF LORDS? Genesis 1:27.
I hear this more as pseudo intellectual. It's tight, but so what? Playing atonally is easy. Add some rhythmic variations and rehearse them. And you get this. Writing a memorable melody, that's something else.
Bruno dos Reis I have several available at CD baby and Amazon. If you're interested, I also have over 300 UA-cam Videos which has a broad variety of styles from jazz to pop to classical, and lots of covers of classic rock tunes. Or maybe you were just trying to be facetious -- that ES has a record deal and I don't therefore she's better and/or my opinion has no validity. But you'd have to be pretty ignorant if that was your point and I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. There are many people far more talented than me and ES who don't have record deals.
+Nelson Montana If this is your idea of "playing atonally" you have no idea what you are talking about. Who are you to call this "pseudo intellectual" when you can't even differentiate between heavily tonal music and atonal music? Just because you don't like or understand a certain kind of music doesn't mean you have to belittle it.
+Nelson Montana I will also say that I agree with you about one thing. Yes, this track doesn't have the most memorable hook or melodic figure to latch onto. It doesn't really need that though. There a several other songs from this set that are extremely memorable and very melodic. Not every single song needs to have a standout melody. Sometimes it's ok to experiment and jam. Thats how artists keep themselves from repeating the same dull formula and go on to create more interesting music.
+Nelson Montana Man all music is completely random unless you make sense of it. Either way, how is it relevant to the music when you're listening to it how it was made? You may not, but I really feel this song emotionally, and this is one of the most memorable memories I've ever heard. It's been running in my head since I heard it.
too dark for me, I love the brighter side of esperanza like radio society. You crossed over , they finally got you , what's next... very disappointed. you showing symphony for judus.
what kind of foolishness? I swear esperanza is the last person you should be concerned about "crossing over". This album is real and organic in every sense. It seems you need to do a little more digging.
She's overqualified to be a genius...
Harvard agreed and hired her as Professor of Music.
This is the most accurate comment I've ever read on this app.
I'm in awe! This song gives my eargasms. Everything about this song is perfect. Thank you for making beautiful, thought provoking music.
everything is just perfect. i'm addicted to this. composition, arrangements, vocals, vibe.. everything.
Just like Joni and Jaco in a single person??!!
Zio Pier Such a dope fuse...Mr. Pastorious was absolutely brilliant...and Mrs. Joni Mitchell? Well, it goes without saying that she is an amazing storyteller/songwriter!! 7 thumbs up for your pairing sir!
Spot on.
+ Kate Bush - that's 3 in 1 XD
This is awesome. Seriously awesome. Excellent music. Of course you'll never hear it on the radio.
Heard this on NPR a few days ago. Kept waking up in the morning with it in my head. I finally found it, and now I'm forever screwed. Thanks, Esperanza.
"♫ Forgive this innocent wrecking ball (man made) ♪♩"
ZOMG this song and everything on D+Evolution kills. Album of the year, power trio of the decade.
I feel like I've been searching for this sound my entire life
Damn this sistahs deep and talented, AND FINE AS HELL! DAAAMN
+Jey GQ Yeah ! That Niggah can play man !
She's been waiting her whole life just for you....
Like a daughter of Jony Mitchell and Robert Fripp! I love it!
Love this stuff...kind of progressive, expressive, impressionistic, in the fine tradition of Joni Mitchell, Joan Armatrading and Cassandra Wilson...but with just a little more edge...nice!
See..this right here is why she's one of my "girl crushes" - highly skilled on every level and freaking gorgeous! Go Espe!
thank you for the gift of this song
I invited a friend and by song 2 she turned around and said "I don't get it, it's not my style"! and ran away never to be seen again. +Peter Ferguson Exactly.
Pete, age is not the point. That girl just has no the sensibility to feel the song. For example: I am 21 y o. And my neighbor son, who is 8 years old loves Esperanza(my influence haha). You will find someone who has the soul and your tune ! Kisses!
she is probably enjoying her Justin Bieber collection
Even though they're structured like pop songs, they're spiky and different. D+Evolution is hard to get into, it took me several plays on random shuffle to get. I now think it's the best record in years and the band is one of the top power trios OF ALL TIME.
What a great story!! And so we are with you enjoying this magical trip courtesy of Ms. Esperanza!
Loveeee this album!! Instant classic!!
awesome! nice to hear something so orignial
Yesterday I was in her concert in Berlin and it was excellent. Welcome to the world Emily, you are amazing!
Wondrous. Quite a lot of mid seventies Joni Mitchell in there. Sophisticated as hell, and such a relaxed performance...
Esperanza is an island in the middle of a big ocean. In parallel, she show us, the way of the future of new music. Big passion in this voice and great band.
Heading up to Santa Rosa, CA to see her tonight. Looking forward to it.
Coming from her Exposure live album creation after it has ended to listen to one of her most amazing performances.
Oh. My. WHOAAA!! There is nothing to not LOVE in this performance (full circle beyond beautiful)!!! Thank you, Chrissie Loftus for turning me on to this funky awesomeness!!!
This new direction fro the divine Ms. Spalding is simply the best stuff I have heard in years. Possibly decades. And who is the guitar player?
+Fatgeologist Took me a while, but finally found him: Matthew Stevens.
Thanks for that.
It's just a matter of taste. I've been a fan from the start and love her weirdo artist work.
Andrei Cherascu. I agree with you. I declare myself a true fan an admirer of her work. What people may consider weird I consider another extension of her talent. Lets enjoy!!
Long live weirdo artists. Need more of 'em.
Flying in the sky with this music so fantastic!!!
Yesterday alive in Antwerp, Belgium. Esperanza, you give me hope ! One love !
Beautiful and powerful
Can't wait for my copy of the album to arrive.
That.....was.............flawless....🙌🏽
"diggin' up holy scriptures to shame her while she drowns" ... epic line!
PURE TALENT.
I'm so obsessed with this song😭😭
Ooh Chile, I hear many inusruments and tempos all at once, and in their own timing. The lick of each instrument could be its own song. I Love the lyrics. This is a masterpiece. New age Groovy
I'm too stupid for this music.
+texbls It's jazz man.
+Cam L. is it really? Its rather hard to categorised it, there's hardly any improv here I love her previous work she is great but this over-intellectualized I would get just one big headache after 2hour concert.
texbls Improvisation is not the only characteristic of jazz.
+texbls You shouldn't think of it as a headache ;)

+texbls I don't find it over-intellectualized. I find this this song particularly mainly very soulful. But this song is pretty different and so it took me a couple of listens to start feeling it.
Simply astounding.
Still my favorite version of this track.
+Fora de Cena' Yeah, right'. Kate Bush? Please!. Think Joni.
+Kandelise Kandle. Some songs on her new LP do remind me of Kate Bush as well as the obvious mid 70's Joni M. influences plus 70's King Crimson, Funkadelic, Hendrix et al.

We need more musicians like this.
😭😭incredible💖
She is my hero, I was wondering what Esp was doing ....man lovin this, hands down this force continues to evolve!!!!!!!
Rare seeing a 5-string fretless bass? And sounding that good?
what a congenious guitarplayer!
In the midst of such fascinating personal development and experimentation - not many people can pull it off like she can. Esperanza is the shit!
as she goes old she becomes more and more interesting... good stuff to come from her for the years to come, keep an eye out!
Men, Africa beats in our hearts and souls but all of us are deaf to it. At least most of us...
She's perfection
Singing and playing a fretless bass at the same time is just 👌👌👌👌👌👌
...and she did an amazing job in both...
Wow !
CHILLS!!!
beautiful!
Estou louco para ir a um show da Ms Spalding!
I hope you`ll visit Kazakstan! Looking forward to meet you!
Have watched this like 20 times and just now discovered Justin Tyson on drums 😅
wow, killer skills..
Now, this one I agree is very much Joni-like :-)
Man i love this girl damn she can play
hermoso !
is that a 10-yr backup singer?
Haha! Her name is Emily Elbert! She's awesome too, check her channel :)
I think she's 25 in this video, but at first I also thought she was 10.

The guitar is a tad loud but beautiful chords in what is a beautiful song which can't be easy to play on bass and sing. I love Esperanza!
epic Emily! !!
fireee
they say music is currently dumbing down, according to the math, when the sum of our music history is analyzed by supercomputers, its so refreshingto see folks rebel
She punches me right in the feels like no one else. A million miles ahead of any female artist that I can appreciate.

goddess
Who is the female backing vocalist, she is really sweet
+Jana Blabla
Emily Elbert
For any fellow guitarists trying to learn the chords to this song, I feel your pain.
Mathew Stevens has a ridiculous sense of timing.
This song rocks my socks man!! xD
Who the fuck is this guitar player holy shit
No kidding. He's playing 3 levels beyond everyone else.
Yeah, he's awesome. Looking forward to hearing some of his own stuff.
Right when he started coming in with that chord my soul left my body
I'm currently reading Oyasumi Punpun, and it seems to me as if this song was made for the manga

Force of human nature!
can somebody explain what she's talking about in this song?
Who is the guitar player?!
+guitardt yeahh!!! ive been wondering the same thing.. im suspecting that its Mathew Stevens... i may be wrong though...
+Ngare Mukiria That who I thought it was. He has that unmistakable sound from the Christian Scott days.
It's 100% matt Stevens
+guitardt it is definitely Matt Stevens. On backing vocals, trombone and keys is Corey King, his bandmate from ERIMAJ.
joni mitchell in black with the bass guitar ?
+Damien The only other singer to cross these boundaries was Joni Mitchell. Go Emily- Jazz-Pop-Other-world sounds
!
I don't like when she talks deep about random philosophical stuff but if that is what it takes for her to get in the groove and sing then no problem.
wow wait what the is that girl esperanza? I liked ms Spalding since 07 just happen to fall of my radar and I run into this video the girl is deff cute btw
baddass.
Got damn! Reese Witherspoon got soul, too!
When I play this record, it rattles the china in the cabinet on the other end of the house - lol
From the divine and organic Spirit creating a musical sermon! Check out my book Dear Joseph by T.S.Eure
Not sure if I want to sing like her
Or make out with her
this is like a bill bruford record but weirder
at 5:07 she gets out of tune - and I love her for this....!

Esparanza is the shit. Don’t explain your art tho at the beginning. I’d they don’t get it, fuck’em.
Mmmfff....

Definitively pretentious ! She knows music and she really want that you know it.
So many influences mixed here, she is a real wannabe...at least she is on the pitch on this one
