Sonic CD, And S3&K are the best in my Opinion. (I originally got the 2 games together , so i refer to them as *Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles* )
Its a shame that Sega didn’t actually finish the full game, like it was supposed to be, rather than splitting it into 2 parts.

8-bit Sonic 2 (Game Gear/Master System) is NOT a port. There is a separate Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic and Tails/Sonic Chaos, and Sonic and Tails 2/Sonic Triple Trouble sequence for the 8-bit platforms.

I actually loved the special stages, but that's only because I was playing on the Sega Forever mobile port.

27:40 In LEGO Dimensions the name used for this robot is “Robo Sonic.” I literally never hear anyone call it that, it’s the closet to canon I think we’ve gotten and both Mecha Sonic and Silver Sonic are names used for other robots in the series.

Interesting! I heard the LEGO Dimensions game was actually a really good sonic collab project! Robo Sonic seems like a good title, its so odd how the name goes back in forth with nothing officially labeled especially since its Sonic 2..one of the most iconic games in the franchise! Thanks for watching, hope you liked the video!

@@Eldarin Yeah Robo Sonic has such a weird history. From my understanding the official name was actually Mecha Sonic before 3&K. But then 3&K happened and the name was taken. The comics used the name Silver Sonic (which is what most people say) to help differentiate the two but in one of the Gear Gear games there's a robot people also call Silver Sonic which might also not have a canon name, might be wrong about that. But I think Silver Sonic fits that robot Sonic Better.

Sonic 2, the game to introduce my favorite character to the series, and one of my favorites in general, Miles "Tails" Prower! However he's been treated extremely poorly in recent years... Its been 15 years, Sega, FIFTEEN YEARS! Make him (and the others characters!) playable again in the next mainline title! If Boom despite all its problems can make Amy, Knux and Miles playable in 3D again, then there's no excuse for their absence in the next mainline 3D title.
With you talking about the Special Stages, it was just last year I finally managed to beat them myself thanks to the Christian Whitehead android versions with its save files. Even when playing it in the Mega Drive in 1992, to the Saturn with Sonic Jam, and Gamecube Mega Collection, I could never do it XD Though with you saying about Tails trailing behind, I don't really get mad at the fox cub, usually telling him to watch out, should he hit a bomb, and as just as I say that I usually hit one myself which has me half laugh and shake my head as I think to myself. "It seems we're just as good at this as each other, Tails."
Also for you calling Skychase and Wing Fortress lullabies, after listening through to the original demos from Masato Nakamura, the Death Egg stage music sounds like twisted creepy lullaby I could imagine Eggman singing. I suppose not unlike the anime movie when Sarah imagines her future with Eggman, where she's lumbered with a bunch of Eggman tots and is pregnant with another one on the way. All while Eggman sings "Rock-a-by robot, on the egg-top...
    " *shudders*
With the with music as well, though you never did play the Whitehead versions, for Hidden Palace it uses the 2 Player music from Mystic Cave which I feel is pretty subpar when compared to what the actual music was supposed to be, as I do feel its one of my favorite songs from the game, along with Aquatic Ruin's theme and I would usually stick on in the options sound test. And also said about the options menu, the music there is also pretty great with it a shorten looping version of the ending song, Sweet Sweet Sweet.
BTW if you've not listened to them yet, be sure to check out the original Nakamura demos from Sonic 1 and 2 as they are on youtube and they are quite interesting to hear, even if Sonic 2's music is a little slower than what its meant to be. But that ofcourse be fixed by meddling with the playback speed on youtube.

Nice review! Personally, I think Sonic 2 is the second best of the 4 Classic games, second of course to 3&K. It really nails what made Sonic 1’s best levels (Green Hill) so much fun, while adding in a new flair for wild speed. It’s got its issues, but it’s a lot of fun all the way through.
Wing Fortress is a pretty fun Zone, in my opinion. The music sounds weird, I agree, but that’s actually what I like about it - it’s such a weird shift in tone that it really threw me off on my first playthrough and made me feel a little bit afraid, which I think really works for it. Also, while the song doesn’t really fit “Sonic storms Eggman’s ship”, it does fit “Eggman’s ship”, if you know what I mean. It’s got this sort of militaristic, royal sound to it, like a marching band, but it also has these dark undertones that really sell Eggman’s sinister plan. It’s also quite difficult, which fits for the last major Zone in the game. By the way, did you know you can damage boost through some propellers at the beginning of the stage to skip nearly all of it? You can use Super Sonic too, but chances are you’ll be plummeting to your death because a quite precise platforming challenge is right after, haha. I totally agree with your stance on Sky Chase though, it’s a real slog after your first playthrough. Cool setpiece, just isn’t very fun.
Alright, it’s time for the Special Stages. I’ve heard people say that Sonic 2’s Special Stages are awful a whole lot, and to an extent, I agree. They’re definitely frustrating, and a bit too reliant on memorization to complete. However, I think people often forget to look at the bigger picture in the experience as a whole here. You gotta remember, Super Sonic is a reward for determined players who have mastered and likely beaten the game. In other games, this would be a post-game reward, unlocked maybe for just beating the game, or getting 100% completion. But, in Sonic 2, you weren’t able to save, so that wasn’t an option. Instead, they made the Special Stages focus on memorization, which means you’ll probably have played a whole lot of the game, or even beaten it, by the time you finally unlock your prize. This is how it was for me, it took me a few more runs after beating the game to retrieve all 7 Emeralds and become Super Sonic. It really makes Super Sonic feel earned, and I appreciate that. If getting Emeralds was too easy, it’s possible you could just get them before reaching the latter half of the game and never get to play it the way it was intended. I also think it and the final boss play a large part into Sonic 2’s aspects of mastery and replayability. I’m a firm believer in the fact that playing Sonic 1 or 2 without save states isn’t really getting the right experience. Without the Game Overs you’re sure to get on the final boss, you won’t be playing through these levels over and over, learning new routes, getting quicker and better at the game. It’s a really awesome feeling to become a master at Sonic 2, and those choke points where you’re sure to die a lot like the final boss, while frustrating, contribute a lot to that overall experience, in my opinion (though, I think S3&K's way of handling replayability with multiple playable characters and whatnot was the best way to do it, instead of frustratingly difficult boss fights and cheap deaths). The Special Stages do this by giving you a reason to keep playing, and to finally get Super Sonic, which you’ll then be able to combine with your knowledge of the stages to just blaze through the rest of the game. It’s a total power trip and I love it, but it wouldn’t work if it trivialized a game you hadn’t already learned to beat without invincibility and crazy speed, y’know what I mean? Also, one more thing regarding the Special Stages, I thought having Tails along was pretty fun. I enjoyed having to think ahead about Tails’ delay, like a bonus challenge of sorts, and if you’re able to keep him alive throughout the whole stage you can reap some serious rewards. It’s fun!
Overall, I’d say Sonic 2 is an upgrade in basically every way from Sonic 1. No more boring slow platforming, and tons of upgrades to presentation, speed, physics, story, everything that made Sonic interesting in the first place. This is a little random, but I looooove how Sonic looks in this game. They only made a couple changes, but I think they make a huge difference. Specifically, his shade of blue is much more vibrant and in my opinion looks leagues better than 1 or CD ever did. Also, Super Sonic just looks incredible. Of course, his general design is just awesome, and his flying animation is super cool. What I think really sells it though, is the little touches, like how he does that cool crouch like he’s about to take off at the speed of sound (which he is, since pressing down means you're probably about to spindash, it works so well I love it aaaaaaaa) or how instead of pushing against blocks and walls with both hands like a scrub, he pushes against it with his shoulder. My personal favourite is that instead of flailing his arms like an idiot when he’s about to fall off his ledge, he just straight up crosses his arms and stands there, it’s so badass, I love it.
Alright, that’s all I have to say. Nice review! I’m excited to see more!

    There might be misspellings:
I’m playing the IOS version and got all the Chaos Emeralds in both saves so far one with Sonic & Tails then Sonic solo.
In the no save I beaten the Death Egg Robot which took 6 minutes (my heart was beating btw and also I just beaten it like 10 minutes ago or less idk I’ll check the time I took a picture which will tell me when I took it).
Robo Sonic was pretty easy but sometimes I messed up which resulted in me being dead.
The Special-Stages are unfair but I gotten them all first in Emerald Hill Zone from Act 1 to Act2 and with the help of the restart button I was able to get all the emeralds.
I actually died after running out of time and I thought I lost the 4 collected Chaos Emeralds but actually when fighting EggHead I tapped the jump button twice becoming Super Sonic which shocked me and I was so glad that I still got all the Chaos Emeralds still.
How I gotten them was just looking up a playthrough of the IOS Special-Stages which made it easier for me I know Ima cheater but ehh I’m not gonna suffer.
Super Sonic is annoying not the theme but I keep tapping the jump button twice and it’s annoying cause when having Tails and trying to get to higher placed with him carrying Sonic I keep going Super and what’s worse there’s no button for me to go back to base no check point for me to back to base which means I have to either die or let all the rings be drained and I could die if I get hit by an enemy or crushing block.
After playing Sonic Mania Plus for far to long on my Nentendo Switch wow the physics feel worser imo cause the rool feels like I have less control the mid air movement also which I hate it’s also a problem in Sonic 1 IOS version (which I beaten all saves with Sonic solo, Sonic & Tails my prefer way of playing, Tails solo & Knuckles with all of them having 6 Chaos Emeralds).
In Wing Fortress there’s the plat-forms you need to be careful and time your jumps and landing but when playing in no save mode I transformed into Super Sonic and I was able to skip sections on top of the ship thanks to the higher jump which is awsome and also I have Debug Mode too but didn’t use it so I’m more confident on beating the game 4 times.
Metropolis is easy sometimes I die, get annoyed by the bolt platform.
That’s what I have to say so far.

I’m actually surprised with how much I agree with your opinion. I agreed with everything, except for your love of Oil Ocean. I just don’t like it, and whenever I play, I get hit by Seahorses and other things very unfair to actually react to. Also, you never seemed to have problem with the hitboxes of many enemies. This was something I had problems with. Many times I just felt like the enemies just weren’t fair, like Metropolis Zone enemies, and The Death Egg’s ‘claws.’ However, with Robo/Mecha Sonic, I think his hitbox is way too lenient and allow you to hit him at points when you shouldn’t, making him incredibly easy. I also think you let Metropolis off without enough scolding, but that’s just my anger speaking. Everything else you said though I complete agree with. Special stages horrendous, Aquatic Ruin being awesome, yada yada yada... I guess I also like Sonic 2 more than 1, but that’s not really to Sonic 2’s credit, more of the fact I just like Sonic 1 less.
Also, another nitpick about Sonic Knowledge. This could be considered debatable, but Tails’ debut was from Sonic 2 (8-bit version) that was released earlier. Granted, he wasn’t exactly playable, and it’s essentially a port, but I still stick by my point that it’s a different enough game to be considered different installment than a port.

    • @Eldarin
      @Eldarin  3 роки тому +1

Hey there! Thanks for watching and yeah I totally feel you on the hitboxes, normally that kinda stuff doesn't bother me but I could totally understand how that would be frustrating. The seahorses didn't bother me but what did was the starfish in Metropolis zone personally. I do think there is some things to like about Metropolis but its not a zone I ever have an itch to go play randomly. I really need to try the 8-bit versions out of Sonic 1 and 2 I've been hearing a lot of good things.

Honestly I like wing fortress better than metropolis zone, I’m not saying I like wing fortress, I’m just saying that metropolis zone sucks ass, specifically act 3, acts 1 and 2 were ok but act 3 gave me the most trouble with sonic 2 (besides my first playthrough of chemical plant act 2 but that was less due to me having trouble with the zone itself and more due to me trying to get all the chaos emeralds as soon as possible) but metropolis zone act 3 was the only zone to make me stop playing and take a break (I was playing on the mobile port so I had save files) I’m not sure why act 3 gives me so much trouble specifically, but I know I didn’t have this much trouble with wing fortress, maybe it’s just because wing fortress has more room to move around and having none of the bullsh*t badnik placement that metropolis zone has, as well has having less annoying badnik types overall.

It's pretty rare to see someone rank Sonic 2 below the first game, but I do agree with the assessment. I feel like Sonic 2 had a lot of good ideas and while it did in some ways improve upon the first game (2 act stages, spin dash etc), it failed on execution at some points (mostly with annoying stage gimmicks, and also AI Tails being an absolute pain in the special stages), as well as feeling less polished in my opinion (I've run into so many bugs in this game).

What are you saying. 1 is better than 2. That something that is very painfull to say, So Im not Angry I just dissagre a lot. First of yes Sky chase is boring, but there are more good zones than bad ones. And it a short part of the game, And Wing fortress is not that bad, Honelsty it a fine level. And the death egg yeah i do agree with that one.
But i do Think Sonic 2 improves a lot of Sonic 1 was trying to go for. Not to mention that a lot of the zones in Sonic 1 was not very “Sonic” Marble is kinda fun but it the complete oppisite of Green Hill, Labyrinth zone is bad. But in Sonic 2 most of the levels good or bad feels like A Green Hill. And i dont Think there is one thing that the First game did better, yes even the special stages. Maybe it just me that knows This game Well, but i dont find Them frustrating. Well if you only play as Sonic. And you dont need to play Them. If you dont like a part of the game, just dont play it. And it optinal. And While Sonic 2 does have a bigger focus on speed which makes more easyer to get hit by a lot of Hazards. Sonic games where made to be replayed many times, So that hazards you did not see coming, Well in your fifth time playing the game you know that it there and you Can keep your speed going. And you Can predict some of the placements of these hazards. So if you ask me, Sonic 2 is better Sonic 1. Of Course Im not here changing your opinion Im just a mad Sonic fan who has a problem, and that Sonic himself. But hey that just a comment, a Sonic comment.

Tails especially which was awesome but what sucks he doesn’t have a Super form don’t care if it’s just a glow affect it still sucks but at least I wouldn’t have to deal with going Super when just trying to fly but the problem I had with Sonic applies to Knuckles who’s abilities requires to tap the jump button twice do I need to state the obvious no.
I had an easier time playing as Tails through the better play-through while Knuckles no.
Before I finished the Sonic & Tails and Sonic solo save I played as Tails & Knuckles in Emerald Hill Zone, got all the Chaos Emeralds and beaten Chemical Plant and stayed in Aquatic Ruins Zone.
I played Tails & Knuckles back to back so like I did Aquatic Ruins Zone with Tails then Knuckles and then Hill atop Zone for Knuckles then Tails and so on and so forth.
Metropolis Zone was fine except I died in Act 3 as Super Knuckles when running before getting to the boss as I fell off which was dumb.
Oil Ocean was awful imo the Badniks were annoying because they’re all based on shooting which is stupid and th yellow whatever Badnik it is follows me it’s stupid and as Knuckles I died to the boss many times but didn’t get a game over thankfully as I think I was up to only having 5 or 6 lives left.
Mania Plus both Mania Mode and Encore Mode Oil Ocean Zone is far superior thanks to the Elemental Shields and Mighty I was able to get a better experience.
The Death Egg Zone with Knuckles was a pain except for Tails.
I died as Knuckles against the Death Egg Robot (and a few deaths from Robo Sonic but didn’t count how much as it was pretty easy and only died due to messing up) 67 times and only beat him finally thanks to a UA-camr who gave a guide I believe it was Retro Nova Games I believe (sorry for messing up the name btw) but Yee it was awful I tried but I keep messing up thankfully I manage to beat it and won finally thank god.
After beating the game I went to Mystic Cave Zone with Sonic & Tails and I got to the Hidden Palace Zone which is my favorite zone in the entire game it’s the Star Light Zone of Sonic 2 imo I love the level just from the level design alone it’s expansive, has enough space to move around and imo balance the 3 elements speed, platforming and exploration amazingly I wish this zone was in Sonic Mania Plus.
So I beat all 4 saves so in conclusion I don’t like Sonic 2 that much I only like 1 zones which is Hidden Palace Zone and same with Sonic 1 with Star Light Zone.
That’s kinda sucks imo but I have to be honest here most of the zones I don’t like and Sonic 4 Ep2 has a bit more stages I like but that doesn’t even compare to Mania Plus which all zones I’d gladly play even Mirage Saloon Act 1 Sky Chase act Yee I’m not joking.
Oh Yee speaking of Sky Chase Zone and every other Zone here’s the list.
    Emerald Hill Zone:
The Coconut Badniks were annoying and the spikes I hate a lot but the esthetics are great I like it more then Green Hill Zone and wish some of the esthetic like the rocks in the caves and floors were in Mania Plus Green Hill Zone Act 2.
Boss is meh but I fought Spin-Dash into it from the back would bounce me back after hitting it.
    Chemical Plant Zone:
Not a fan but ehh I like it more wish the sky was black and had stars I didn’t like the orange look up there specially the buildings.
The infamous section was terrible so ehh.
Boss was fine I guess but the plantform why and what’s worse they don’t stop after you defeated the boss so you have to be careful still it can lead to my death which I hate.
    Aquatic Ruin Zone:
Not bad but the Badniks and falling pillars are annoying.
Boss is kind of meh but the buttons were big to were I couldn’t see the arrows hit me.
    Hill Top Zone:
Fine but idk it just meh I hate the Badniks the one that shoots spikes, spikes on the floor, and inside section which isn’t terrible.
No the waiting on the plat form isn’t bad I’m more of a slow player anyways.
Boss is okay kind of reminds me of Marble Zone boss.
    Casino Night Zone:
Better then the other Zones and Spring Yard Zone too just wish I had more room and going into Super Sonic sucks and is annoying.
When fight the boss as Super Knuckles was kind of funny I cling onto the wall we’re Eggman comes and he stays next Knuckles and doesn’t move leading to his defeat.
(I just realized Casino Night Zone happens before Hill Top Zone my bad)
    Mystic Cave Zone:
Annoying spikes, the light blob enemies that reminds me of the once from Stardust Speedway Zone which sucks, crushing grass thing I hate it and the boss is fine.
    Boss I hate.
    Hidden Palace Zone:
Love it I already explained it but the enemies do shoot fire the little TRex Badnik but it isn’t annoying.
There’s only 1 act which can only be access by falling into the infamous pit with spikes in Mystic Cave Zone.
The boss is just about waiting for a big spike to come down and Eggman will stay on top of you and follow you, wait until a bigger spike falls and stand top of it and the bigger spike explodes it shoots water and move when that happens as it’ll his Eggman but make sure Eggman stays on it.
    Oil Ocean Zone:
Already talked about it hate it.
    Metropolis Zone:
Better but the annoying moving drill and Asterons (however you spell their names?).
Boss is fine I guess annoying but fine.
    Sky Chase Zone:
Fine but annoying due to the screen being zoomed in which isn’t the case in Mania Plus I believe so Yee.
    Wing Fortress Zone:
I hate the bottom layer but in a Super form and Tails I can fly high and straight to the boss battle.
Tails against the boss is fine I think I just lost my shield and kept all my rings.
    Death Egg Zone:
Robo Sonic is fine but the Death Egg Robot I hate but manage to find a strategy that takes like 7 minutes all together.
    Knuckles is the worst tho.

Seems like because you love sonic you don’t want to deny flaws with the games specifically saying you think labyrinth is better than wing fortress. Just because you love water levels in sonic does not mean they break the pace of the game sonic is about speed not slow platformering that’s not what SEGA pushed with sonic. Wing fortress keeps the platforming but also still has speed unlike labyrinth.

Sonic 2 isn't the best game like everyone says, but it isn't the worst. It has it's flaws like bad (and sometimes infuriating) level design and a ton of glitches that happen randomly (like in Pokemon Red&Blue), but there are improved things like good music, expanded levels, Spin Dash and a new character - Miles "Tails" Prower. Special Stages (in Sonic 2) are the worst thing in existence and can just go to hell. It's the only Classic Sonic game that I needed savestates to complete 100%. Because of those reasons I rank this game C/S+. If they went with the original concept of time travel or just implemented the unused zones Sonic 2 would be a lot more interesting.
Edit 17/11/2020: Finally completed Sonic 2 without savestates. I obviously played with Knuckles because without this DLC the game is unplayable and got all Emeralds first-try except for the last one (which I got on my second try). Still my opinon doesn't change.

I agree it's not the best in the classics but I still really enjoy it. I also would be really interested to see what would have come if they went with the original time travel mechanic too...also raises the question if CD would have even happened and the impact that would've had on the plot of it.
