Looking back, I’m shocked at how substantive this debate was, something I took for granted at the time. I voted Obama, but In all honesty Romney would have been a great president.

The 2 of them both cared about people, were willing to attack only policy and not each other, both of them respect women, and both of them felt their runs for president were important for the country. However, the differences between Clinton and Trump go too far.

A lot of people criticized Jim for his moderating this debate, but I actually liked that he didnt interrupt or talk much. Yeah Obama and Romney went off on tangents a lot, but we're watching to see them talk, not the moderator.
He was also 78 by this point and unlike our current president he didn't need to read a teleprompter in order to moderate this debate. Unlike a lot of other journalists he actually did care about being objective and didn't just say it. He said he never voted in an election ever.
Right ok Now I remember, Presidential Candidates used to actually make sense. Oooh The good Old Days.

Kudos to Jim Lehrer for not micromanaging this debate and sitting back and letting the two candidates go back and forth without constantly inserting himself into the fray. Debate moderators today could learn from that and also realize that the public doesn't care about the moderator, as debate moderators are irrelevant to our lives. We want to hear what the two candidates have to say. This was the last and probably will be the last debate that was run the way it was supposed to run. Now, the unwritten rule for debate moderators is to run interference for and bail out the Democrat every time they are in trouble.
As a side note, Obama's performance in this debate was so abysmal, that in the next debate (the VP debate), Biden acted like an obnoxious, drunk, heckler every time that Paul Ryan tried to speak. He tried the same with President Trump 8 years later in the first debate and Trump put it right back at him and afterwards Biden was crying like a schoolyard bully that got punched in the mouth. Joe Biden singlehandedly lowered the standards and decorum for debates in that 2012 VP debate that has continued to this day.

To fix the middle class both parties need to change. The GOP needs to move on from Reaganism, and study Eisenhower's platform. The Democrats need to move on from Clintonism, and study FDR'S platform. When they were the gold standard for both parties we had the #1 middle class in the world.

I'm not the only person who came here after the dumpster fire that was the Trump-Biden debate.
I'm not an American but I've followed US politics for years (who hasn't) and this, in hindsight, was so beautiful to watch. At the time I fixated on Romney - whom I believed as simply 'the opponent that shouldn't be president'. Albiet I only 15 and so I cared about B.Obama primarily because he was a Democrat and that he was a ethnic minority president. But looking back, there is a decoram and a friendly disposition that shows the quality of these two candidates.
This was 8 years ago, yet it almost feels as if we've travelled back to an older era. It reignites a nostalgic memory. We are so opposed to our current era of US Politics that we have completely revised our beliefs and perceptions of the past decade of US politics.
Whereas we felt, at the time, that politicians had become the most erratic, corrupt, and partsian than they've ever been in history - in hindsight, it almost seems as if we were completely wrong. That, in fact, politicians were held to an incredibly higher standard. That they were bound to posses a strong moral character - that comprised of their dignity, respect and integrity.
This seems to be so transformative across history - the future of politics have consistently trangressed the lines that were never to be crossed.
And yet, despite this constant devolution of politics, candidates for the presidency have always been held to the highest standard. Their voting record, their past statments, their demeanour - all of these things had to be unequivocally balanced against an incredibly judgmental media and public. There was no 'get-out-of-jail' card that made these issues so unimportant.
The president was the soul of the nation. And transgressions were punished, in some form, by the American people.
Clinton was impeached for an minor scandal - an affair in his office. Nixon resigned at the fear of removal because of a major scandal. LJB respected the role of being the VP that took over after a presidents death and never ran for reelection.
This was the era of US politics before populism had any benefit to US presidential candidates and coild effectively nullify critics and the American public. Instead policy and the candidate who was running - were always the most fundamental issue.
How times have changed.

Back when America had class
This really was the last normal Presidential election year. At least the candidates had respect for each other personally, even if they disagreed politically. The 2016 debates a lot of civility was lost, but last night was truly shameful. The common denominator to this is Trump.
OUR WORLD IS GOING TO HELL.
