Nice video and presentation. One good way to hide flaw with axial based sensors from paddle based is combined power/time plot and not separated left and right plot. Axial based sensors produce mono torque data requires cadence timing to distinguish left from right that involves post processing. Flaws contributed by cadence timing and algorithm will be lost in combined plot.
I bought the p-505 3 months ago and it stopped communicating to my Garmin. I email the company and they told me I have to ship it back to China ($40) than if they think it needs replacing they will send me one or fix it. Also charging me another $40. So a total of $80 to get a replacement.
Hello Shane. I make a review of this powermeter, but only in Russian, will make it in English soon. It is very important to use thread locker, because the bolts (both on the left crank arm) has a tendency to unscrew. So be careful, the thread locker from factory is very poor
I have these Left arm came lose many times, medium loctite did the trick here. Mine replaced my grx 2x with di2. There was enough adjustment in the fd to make it work perfectly, although I run 50 36 rings. Grx 48 31 can't be mounted
the P325CS, it wont wake and won't charge. Didn't get support from magene so my temper got the best of me and I throw it away. Now my P325 just blinks red when I tried to charge. Both are from aliexpress around early 2021. Now I have the PES505 and I hope it won't have the same fate as the first two.
I've been using it for almost a year but the left crank arm has come loose several times. A greater torque has been applied than indicated in the manual but it continues to happen, be careful that the Magene support is not very good and falls on the seller.
How is axial bearing play taken out - is it some kind of springy washer? Personally I prefer the pinch bolt design as per Shimano and headsets, I had a mountain bike with SRAM with the one magic bolt that both fastens the crank on and takes out play and was not impressed with the design.
Impressive. Very. Looks like a shoe-in option for the farcical Shimano DS powermeter. Can 11spd chainset rings be used with 12sp chains with no issues? Moving to a 12spd gearing and using the rings from the original 11sp chainset seems a cost-effective way to upgrade.
Any long term comments regarding this power meter? I've read concerning reviews about the crank arm falling off while riding, which I can see happening considering this is mounted using a single bolt and no locking plate unlike Shimano's original design.
At the end of your video you were talking about compatibility issues with your new 1x GRX group set. Is the magene power meter compatible with the GRX 2x11 group sets?
I haven't even tried installing this with a GRX group. It's specifically designed as a road crank, so you'd want to check the q-factor and frame clearance before attempting to use this as a GRX crank.
Hmm. That’s seems peculiar. What is the reason that you feel/know it won’t fit the 2x hex drivetrain? I got in touch with the Magene engineers and they ensured me that it would fit my bike. Have one in order now so will try it out once it has arrived and leave another comment here within 2weeks
@@TheLeviatanMan The GRX small chainring bolts on to a different part of the GRX crank as it is smaller than a normal road small ring. The smallest inner ring you could run would be 34t which might be a bit big for a 2x Gravel set up.

Not that it matters much, but one interesting detail is that the specs for the P505 base, have 1.5% accuracy and 200rpm max range, while for the standalone P505's they seem to mention 1% and 240rpm. Is there something different with the accelerometer on the other units ? Or was the accuracy improvement from a firmware upgrade and they just didn't change the marketing material for the P505 base ? (I remember the same 1.5% when the spider only P505s first came up, now they seem to mention 1%). I ordered a full set of these to replace dying ultegra 6800 chainset. It was cheaper to get the full thing, than a spider only + rotor or whatever set.
Warranty of magene is for repairs only. They will not replaced a new one if there is defect. You also need send powermeter to china at your own cost. 50usd-100usd. Im from Philippines they have authorized distributor here. 🤔 They insist to send the powermeter to them. I bought my powermeter in lazada magene LazMall
I can confirm this about the warranty. If something goes wrong you will have to send/ ship the meter back to China. Shane, have you checked the L/R balance output and compared to the others? I'm feeling like mine Magene unit is "more leftsided", as I'm getting results of around L56 R44, and I'm wondering whether that's real or not.
All spider meters can only estimate L/R balance. They won't ever be as accurate as a true dual sided (2x sensors) meter such as crank bases dual or pedals.
All spider power meters, such as this, or the SRM or FSA etc provide the combined output of both sides, therefore, it's a dual power meter. However, because the strain gauges are located in the spider and not the cranks you can't really separate where the power is coming from (left or right) precisely. Does that make sense?
@@cyclecoachcyclecoachcom8071 Spider-based PMs often estimate left and right power by assigning one half of the crank cycle to each leg. It is more accurate than you might think since recent testing has proven that even if you "pull up" with the opposite leg, that leg's contribution to powering the bike during "upstroke is cancelled out by the leg that is pushing down. SRM uses this method of calculation, and is still the gold standard for power meter accuracy.

@@zachs6191 A spider measures both sides as one whole number then the app attempts to split it to give L/R which is not really possible. The known brands all do the same. A left only measures one side and doubles it which leads to inaccuracy and spikes.
Is this crank 100 grams heavier than the Shimano R9200 equivalent? Id also love to know what installing the Magene rings does for the weight and the shifting.
Rotor should make some 24mm spindles and cranks for gravel and MTB with a higher Q factor. Like Vegast/Aldhu modular, so one could stick a P505 on it and there would be no need for a Magene crank.

Is the spider compatible to other cranks? Maybe Rotor Aldhu 24? I just had a snapped crank on my Infocrank powermeter and don't trust some custom cranks anymore. I want to be able to replace a crank, not throwing away the powermeter. Thanks.
I have seen some crank arm tilted or very tiny tiny bit bending issue due to manufacturing on other Magene power meter. I do not know if this issue is fixed?
I just got them and im deciding what chainring I'm going to use for gravel (planing on use 46/32 or 48/32) :D, I have food experience with the p325cs but is more for road (nothing against it)
I appreciate the argument about less (buying) complexity, because you're getting a spider-based PM with the cranks. The downside is that you're locking yourself in with said manufacturer on more components than you would maybe like. If you damage the cranks, does that mean you need to buy the whole lot? Is there an option of buying just the spider? And if yes, what other cranks axles/spindles would this be compatible with, if any?
@@gplama does look remarkably close now that you mention it !! Even to the double spaced notch there. I am waiting on a unit, will check if it fits on the m7100 I have here :)

@gplama i just bought this power meter and put 12 speed 52 36 front rings on in use with 105 di2 front mech. I cant seem to get enough adjustment out of the FD. To get the cage across far enough to clear the chain it ends up rubbing on the back of the crank on the drive side 😢 Any ideas Shane?
So the take away from this comparison is that either premium brands are over charging for budget level accuracy OR budget friendly components are offering premium level accuracy. Anytime you need to zoom into a graph to nitpick accuracy and the price difference is a gulf apart, makes you wonder what are you actually getting for the inflated price regarding the core feature of why we buy power meters. If they both offer readings within 1% of each other, one seems more like daylight robbery.
There's more to it than just the product. Support/warranty/servicing etc play a big part in the pricing. These lesser known (or newer) power meters are now challenging the established players for data/accuracy. It's up to the companies behind them to back them up with a good distribution network, support, etc.
@gplama do you know of any powermeter that comes with a 24mm shimano axle and a length of 160 mm? For time trials, where you often ride wahoo aero pedals and short cranks, that would be very (!) interesting. The first thing that comes to my mind are Rotor Aldhu 24 crank arms; but they are too long.
Hello everyone! Im using a stock cannondale caad8 which comes with FSA cranks (and BB, i assume?). Question is, will this fit in perfectly w/o changing any components? Thanks!
It's a tough one to answer as I haven't dealt with direct customer support for either. I'll have to defer to others who may have had experience with either company in this capacity.

Sounds like a bargain for shipping and labor these days.

Hello Shane. I make a review of this powermeter, but only in Russian, will make it in English soon. It is very important to use thread locker, because the bolts (both on the left crank arm) has a tendency to unscrew. So be careful, the thread locker from factory is very poor
How did you solve the problem finally?
I have these
Left arm came lose many times, medium loctite did the trick here.
Mine replaced my grx 2x with di2. There was enough adjustment in the fd to make it work perfectly, although I run 50 36 rings. Grx 48 31 can't be mounted
seems to be the solution, I just did it too with red Loctite
Hey GP, any experience on the loosening of left crankarm? If so, how did you solve it? Planning to purchase one in the future. Thanks!
Looks very interesting. Can you also use your old shimano cranks on it? Diameter ist the same it also looks rippeled?
Sounds good! But would a 4iiii precision single sided crank based one for 75% of the price be even better?
4iii has issues with the battery caps warping and allowing water in. Hard pass.
I have 2 magene power meters and both stopped charging after 2 years. And there is support that I can go to for help.
What model meter and where did you purchase them?
the P325CS, it wont wake and won't charge. Didn't get support from magene so my temper got the best of me and I throw it away. Now my P325 just blinks red when I tried to charge. Both are from aliexpress around early 2021. Now I have the PES505 and I hope it won't have the same fate as the first two.
I wish there was a way to change the battery if that is the problem.
Regarding GRX power meters, I'm very happy with my Power2Max gravel. I have 2x GRX though. But the spindle is 24 mm so it's a drop in replacement.
Was that using their 'gravel' 24mm spindle?
@@gplamarecording the sales-person from panda-podium this should fit for grx group....
Do you suggest enabling auto-zero (backpedalling)? Ordered one and it’s been great so far.
Entirely up to you.
Impressive. Very. Looks like a shoe-in option for the farcical Shimano DS powermeter. Can 11spd chainset rings be used with 12sp chains with no issues? Moving to a 12spd gearing and using the rings from the original 11sp chainset seems a cost-effective way to upgrade.
Lots of pro teams at TdU this year running 11spd chainsets (9100) with 12spd drivetrains/chains (9200). It'll work, maybe not officially or optimally.

Any long term comments regarding this power meter? I've read concerning reviews about the crank arm falling off while riding, which I can see happening considering this is mounted using a single bolt and no locking plate unlike Shimano's original design.
The one I had didn’t fall off. If the posts online concern you, you’ll either need to try it yourself or go with something else.
Thank you for your response 🙌
It works fine for Grx 1x but won't take the 2x chainrings.
The smallest inner ring you could run would be 34t which might be a bit big for a 2x Gravel set up.

and what is the best way to charge it? plug or portable charger?
Looks like the crank/spider is not replaceable? I just broke my Infocrank powermeter due to a snapped crank arm outside of the warranry. I'm now looking for a spider based PM but with the option to replace spindle and cranks (not sure if ROTOR ALDHU Road 24mm is wide enough for my steel frame)
The link does not seem to work to the Magane website!?!?!
I think the P505 Base now has 1% accuracy after a recent firmware upgrade.
Can you use this with a 1x?
Warranty of magene is for repairs only. They will not replaced a new one if there is defect. You also need send powermeter to china at your own cost. 50usd-100usd. I’m not in a position to review/critique this sorry.
I have put it on two bikes, one a 1x GRX and the other 12 speed Ultegra. Didn't notice much difference with the GRX. On the Ultegra the rings definitively sit about 3mm further outboard so I did have to adjust the front mech out slightly. No issues with clearance, it is on 52 - 36 set up.

I am a little confused. Is this a dual power meter, or only a singe side (right) spider power meter?
All spider power meters, such as this, or the SRM or FSA etc provide the combined output of both sides, therefore, it's a dual power meter. However, because the strain gauges are located in the spider and not the cranks you can't really separate where the power is coming from (left or right) precisely. Does that make sense?
@@cyclecoachcyclecoachcom8071 mostly it does. Probably smoother the pedaling, bigger problem to identify from where (which side) the power comes from.
@@MatoDuris i *guess* they use some sort of algorithm to estimate the left/right balance. I've no idea how accurate that would be.

No issues like this encountered with the PES (or QED) cranksets. I did have a number of concerns with an early model P325 a few years ago.

From memory the P505 was solid. I haven't looped back to it recently with any updates/etc.

@gplama i just bought this power meter and put 12 speed 52 36 front rings on in use with 105 di2 front mech. I cant seem to get enough adjustment out of the FD. To get the cage across far enough to clear the chain it ends up rubbing on the back of the crank on the drive side 😢
Any ideas Shane?
Anyone else feel there power readings on the 505 base bounce around more than other PMs?
I have left sided stages and 4iiii. They just seem smoother.
Seems like magene powermeters have a greater chance of failure and the support is not great.
