Great video, Dave, that brought back a lot of memories when I was a wilderness trip leader in the '70s. The Svea/Sigg set was on all our trips. One thing about the Svea was that it would sometimes lose pressure, especially in wintet conditions. Svea addressed this by coming out with a small removable pump that would attach to the cap. Worked like a charm. I'm happy to say I still have the complete set that continues to work to this day.
Excellent! I classify a sigg tourist as a ‘picnic kit’ which is a moderate to large size kit designed to be an efficient practical cooking tool that is designed to be compact in nature if not lightweight. Good for picnics, base camps, emergency kits, auto/cycle touring or canoe/kayak trips. Basically any application where Russian doll type compactness and practical cooking capability is desirable but ultralight weight is not necessarily required. The idea is that the kit will be conveyed most of the time and be man-transported for short distances.
I have really enjoyed pretty much all that has been posted .... for nothing .... this series shows what a student of the history of how we got here Dave is. I recently reread Kephart and Nessmuk books and most modern UL guys would be amazed at how relevant they are. Plus, it shines out that they actually did this in the stories of refining kit off season when closed in. Dave is in that tradition. Thanks
Dave I am enjoying this series of videos as I was a teenager in the 70's and used a lot of what you are showing in boy scouts and family camping. Thanks keep them coming,
Dave I have the original aluminum set also with 2 aluminum plates that when flipped over they rest right on top below the lid/make shift fry pan and all buckles down tightly..and I don't carry the stove, I use the area to put my dry meals and spices in and just sit the pots right over the fire...its ah awesome awesome old school set, love it for the 2,3 day outings!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Always loved using the Svia. Used them a lot in the early 70s, backpacking the wilderness of Olympic National Park in Washington and the Grand Canyon in Arizona. I still have mine and my father's with the small cup that also fit over the top of the stove.
I scored one of those kits a couple of years ago at a reasonable price but they aren’t getting any cheaper. The wind screen set up also give a very stable base for cooking. Colin Fletcher, great guy. I learned backpacking from his book “The Complete Walker” It has a very good description on how to use the Svea 123.
Thats why i love these videos you Research the entire history of what your talking about or have already experienced it . Unlike alot of youtubers who get a new piece of gear play with it for ten minutes and try to claim they are an expert .
Bushcraft Dan well said. I’ve been to the store in beech grove Indiana and everyone is so nice and knowledgeable. I’m not a fan of the fofo stores. Even REI has too much fluff. I find that mr Canterbury videos are just as much a history lesson as a product review. He reason I just started my channel!!!! One video done so much more to go hahaha
Dave you done again I like these been see them all so far tell the guys and galls I said hi and thanks what you guys are doing teaching those youngins I saw a small clip of jammie working with those youngins! thank s some of this stuff I have used that boy scout ax I have neaver seen before !
Dave, Great review on the stove and cook set. As you have several of the 123 stoves, so do I and in fact I have several of the Optimus stoves that use the same method burning. I enjoy your video’s and have re-watched the “Journal of the Yurt” videos several times. Please do more campfire cooking video’s as well. Your friend Jeffrey
I wish someone would do a copy of these, in Aluminum, Stainless Steel and Titanium. We had one in Aluminum with the burner when I was a child and it got loaned out and never came back, About 20 years back I picked up a Seva 123R for $3.99 at a second hand store, but haven't found a Sigg Tourister set yet.
They are a great stove and cook set. Had mine since the '80's. Only problem is that it is NOT QUIET! Fuel Efficient, no moving parts (no pump, it's self-pressurizing), and nearly indestructible; but it roars like a rocket trying to achieve orbit! A stealth stove, it isn't. A great stove? It is!
I carried a Svea123R back in the 70’s. Boy you were something if you had this stove. Still have it and it still fires up just fine. I’m rebuilding a 123 at the moment too. Great stoves.
I missed the year this tourist set came out, other than it being popular in the '70 … but i can sort of understand why they stopped making them, aluminum camping cook sets are all over the place, be it without the windscreen option inside this one, i got one with 2 pots a lid/pan (and i think it had a kettle inside) that i use for regular camping (screw on stove goes inside with small camping canister of spices) … meaning mainly that some patent likely expired (as well as changes to stoves in general) and knock-offs started showing up pressing any money out of the market to a point where making these wasn't economically viable enough anymore.
I always love when you put out a new video. You were the reason I had enough guts to try to start my own channel. I have made several comments on other people’s videos that anything you buy at the self reliance outfitters is going to be bullet proof. I’ve visited the store twice. Once to buy a mora garberg and second to buy a PKS buffalo skinner, leather sheath, Langley sharpener and the new opined 8 outdoorsmen. Keep up the good work and videos. If you at all could stop by my channel and give me pointers or just let me know your thoughts. I would be so excited and very thankful. I only have one video tho.
Dave, which cup is this? The one I see on your site has handles. I've had my Svea for 40+ years and it still kicks ass even at high, cold temperatures (San Jacinto in 9 foot of snow and all we needed was an Ensolite pad scrap underneath to insulate it so the gas would vaporize). Thanks for this!
Thank you and Great video as always. I am allergic to coconut and I see the LifeStraw uses coconut shells as part of the filtration system. Do you know of any other back up unit that doesn't use coconut in it at all?
I've used aluminum cookware for camping, etc, for over 50 years and have seen no effects from it..Ummm, What were we talking about? LOL, Kidding, It's just a myth.

Dave...i wish you would get back to the basics of survival and bushcraft....please stop becoming the 2019 version of Ron Popiel. We dont need the next pocket fisherman..etc. We get it...you make money on your wares...but every post lately seems to be an infomercial.
I guess I am trying to understand how this video on a 50 year old set of gear is an infomercial? I have almost 1500 videos many of them are on skills, I think education in all its forms are important, if folks are looking to get gear for use in the bush and they do not want to buy something new, this gives them a look at something they may find used-

Love my Svea, bought it in 1980. Backpacked with it for 25 years, still works great.

Casually mentions his equipment building. Now I’m jealous and want an equipment building. Thanks a lot Dave! How about a tour of that building though?
Now i must get myself a Svea just because it fits so nice with my PF cup
Thanks Dave

Thanks for the video buddy
Sir, As always, great video.Thank you for imparting your knowledge.
Just found out that Amazon sells a cheap stainless copy (without the wind shield) of these made by Chinook. Unfortunately the reviews are so so..
Is there a Dave Box that we can subscribe to so we can get all the bad ass stuff you use?
Nice, thanks. What did you make the bail out of? Looks like wire but any details would be appreciated.

Can’t find a channel “retro outdoors”, is there a different name for your friends channel?
Good stuff
I bet someone in Switzerland has a stainless one they would part with. :)
Didn't you do a review on that stove. If you did which one of the woodmans 20th century video is it
Hello from Torrance California
Dave u look so enclosed!!! Lol. Definitely belong in the outdoors. I like ur smaller pathfinder set the best. Other set too big
When are you going to do the review on the Henry single shot
Dave, where do you get those shirts?
Just curious what size cup did u use on the burner
we like that canvas duck bag hanging on your left. what is it ?
Thank you and Great video as always. I am allergic to coconut and I see the LifeStraw uses coconut shells as part of the filtration system. Do you know of any other back up unit that doesn't use coconut in it at all?
ken reynolds that’s interesting! Where and when did u find that out
I don't remember where but it was a cut away advertisement for LifeStraw. In the
Sorry I hit the wrong button but in the Cutaway the coconut shells were at the very bottom.
@@kenreynolds398 I think the *charcoal* used to be coconut shells- never heard of charcoal carrying allergens from what they used to be...
also doesnt the big pot sit on the smaller pot to cook two things at once..
That is super cool
And I am a big fan
Don’t they make one in a brass box too
Is there health issues with using aluminum when heating water / cooking food?
Ralph No. Perfectly safe.
Ralph Stone that is a good question I would like to know a solid answer too
The Alzheimer's myth relating to aluminum cookware and bakeware is just that, myth.
I've used aluminum cookware for camping, etc, for over 50 years and have seen no effects from it..Ummm, What were we talking about? LOL, Kidding, It's just a myth.
What does the stove burn i the way of fuel?
Sorry, my bad, I just found the previous video where you talked about the stove.
Have you ever thought about doing a Netflix series???
Codename Hannibal I know an awesome video production company 😜
