I knew a guy who was incredibly good at football. He was abnormally strong for his size, incredibly talented, hard working and understood the game better than anyone else. He was one of the best his academy age group (of a championship team), and he still didn't make it- got kicked out at about 16- didn't get a professional contract. He was also a national tennis player as well- so he was abnormally suited to playing at a high level in sport. I've played football all my life and never seen a player around my age as good as him- and that includes a lot of good players. But he didn't make it probably because he simply lacked intelligence and subtlety I think- a seemingly minor flaw that meant he could never take his technique and playstyle and tactics to the next level- despite loads of coaching from exz professional coaches. He still plays at a good level now- he's in the first team at 18 for the semi-proffesional team sudbury. But the point is, the players that you see at that level only make it because they have an all-round ability that is void of any flaws - because they have worked and hoped tirelessly to *overcome* these flaws in their game. To go out of their comfort zone, sacrificing themselves, to make themselves a more rounded and effective player, time and time again.

It's weird seeing fat sports men retire men. I work in a industrial setting. The older men will always out work the younger generation because they have the endurance and the wisdom to void mistakes. Some even have the formula for success in any situation. So why shouldn't we let players play into the age they nolonger want to if they are in good health .
