    Hey, everyone, and welcome to this new video about Adrian Gecko from Yu-Gi-Oh GX! Thought it'd be a fun change of pace to do a character that I don't really like (though obviously that was intentional, based on how he was written) for one of these. Hope everyone enjoys it!
    This video was originally recorded a few days before Pokémon Scarlet and Violet came out, hence the bit towards the beginning where I mentioned that, so let's just acknowledge that the timing of my posting this is weird (like I acknowledged in the video) and move on, haha.
    Anyway, this is gonna be the only video going up today just so I can make sure I have some more Pokémon Violet episodes ready to go for the days coming ahead. That said, I've already got Episodes 20, 21, and 22 recorded, and I just got done editing 20 this morning, so there's that! Stay tuned tomorrow onward for those to go out, if you're the type who likes my Pokémon shenanigans.
    I hope everyone's having a nice Tuesday so far! Also, DRINK WATER.

    Adrian Gecko is personally one of my favorite characters. I don't like him, but I do feel like he isn't talked about as much as he should in the fandom. I'm not a psychologist, but he shares most of the traits that people would ascribe to Antisocial personality disorder (Sociopathy). You addressed his apology at the end, but that was just the dub throwing him a bone. In the sub, he doesn't even apologize, he just yells Echo. Sociopaths can very much feel bad about something, but not feel guilty, so when he yells Echo to me that just says that Adrian feels bad that he couldn't use Echo's soul to it's maximum to beat Yubel. On a side note, I do love how much Yubel uses Adrian's God Complex to mock him.

    • @SuperNerdDaniel
      @SuperNerdDaniel  Рік тому +22

      I'm almost certainly biased because I really like Yubel, but yeah, Yubel just treating Adrian's god complex like their personal punching bag throughout their entire Duel was so great, haha. And honestly, you might be onto something with that assumption of Adrian being a sociopath.

    Adrian is….a mixed character for me. On one hand, I absolutely despise the fact that he willingly sacrificed Echo, who, for all intents and purposes, is the only person who gave a damn about him, yet I still think that it’s poetic irony that despite Echo helping Adrian obtain Exodia’s power, it was the darkness in Echo’s heart that allowed Yubel to destroy Adrian. But that doesn’t change the fact that Adrian’s arc as a villain was kinda…dull for me. We get the literal protagonist of the show doing a heel turn, then we get some brat who feels like he’s entitled to power? I guess something had to give in Season 3.

    Adrian is definitely an interesting sidevillain. At the start of the third season, it was hard to understand what his goals and motivations are. But honestly at the start before dual Academy went to the other world. He was somewhat decent, It because yes he was willing to use Jaden, his friends and the other students, he was going to stop Viper making him more like an anti-hero. It was after Yubel looked into his heart and saw his dark and selfish desires and offered him a way to achieve it that Adrian began to show more of his dark side where he was willing to sacrifice anyone and everyone to achieve it. If there's one thing I truly find disappointing about Adrian is that All he wanted was power love and recognition, which is something he already possessed but couldn't see it. He had plenty of money and power, he was recognized as the top student in east academy and could have went on to be one of the strongest dulist in his generation. Lastly I generally think that despite what he thought his adoptive parents did love him and it was obvious that his brother admired him so it wasn't just Echo that loved him. But for how smart he was he couldn't see that and treaded it all away for a power that when you really think about it wasn't worth the sacrifice.

    I cannot tell you what a masterpiece of a video this is. I’ll be honest I very strongly dislike season 3 of Yugioh gx. However after watching this video I completely see Adrian Gecko for the psychopath/narcissist he truly is. The very fact that he is willing to sacrifice Echo without any hesitation whatsoever truly shows how he’s irredeemable. The last bit of the video where Yubel used Echo’s darkness against Adrian, was such a satisfying ending to his character. Echo despite what Adrian may tell himself set up her love interest to fail. I agree 100% that just because Adrian said sorry at the end doesn’t excuse his actions, the damage was already done. How ironic that Adrian risked nothing for everything only to end up risking everything for nothing. He only felt he should get what he deserved and that’s exactly what he got! What an unparalleled masterpiece this video is. Please do another character analysis as this one was a 1000000 out of 10. Well Done!!!! 😇😇😇😇😇

      Gecko has "The Spare" syndrome. If he becomes narcissistic...well they took it off the original Narcissus and Echo mythological story....just that "him looking in his own reflection" is not a mere overt looking into some water. Then toss in some Richard III "throne preservation" incentive...and that's Gecko. But he started off as "self-sacrificing nice guy".

Then again, given that Adrian's arc was completed by being trounced by Yubel, I'm not sure where they could've slotted in a loss to Jaden before that -- 1. Because he still needed to look like a threat so the Yubel Duel was compelling, and 2. By the time Jaden would have an actual REASON to Duel Adrian, they were already all in the other dimension(s) where losing a Duel would kill you, so I think to a certain degree, they kinda wrote themselves into a corner where a Jaden/Adrian Duel just wasn't gonna be possible, at least not without fudging a lot of things.

  • @lpfan4491
    @lpfan4491 Рік тому +14

    Tbh, I still can't really hate him too much in the end, at least in the dub where he's less written to be a random sh*thead doing stuff(For example, I vividly remember the detail of him considering to kill his brother was cut. May just be the german dub tho). For all I know, unless I missed or forgot something, it was Echo who came up with the "destined to be king of the world at any cost"-thing and he picked it up at some point as something actually legit. He at least seems to look very truthful in his "excuse" of making a better world when he talks about it, when he has nothing left to gain from wearing a mask...despite talking to himself about how claiming Exodia is the one time he is going to be purely selfish before he does it.
    This goes into the territory of the old meme of "almost every character in GX badly needed therapy of some kind", because he seems to just have a warped outlook on the world. He can't do what he considers to be wrong, even if he wants to, he always falls back into being "rightous". In theory, basically a situration of being "too pure for this world". But in reality, his values of what is "right" are just fundamentally off the mark, to where his error needs to be spelled out to him after the fact for him to realize it is something to regret.
    This is not a defence of the character or his actions in the style of "dude did nothing wrong"(Because he did, obviously), but I feel as though that would be what is meant with him not having let any darkness in. He's not actively malicious in his actions and doesn't directly backstab anyone besides Yubel. But he lacks the comprehension to realize that he's very much a villain in this because his moral standing is defined by what his actions are, not what his actions were trying to accomplish or what he didn't do.(Actually, how the heck is this even handled in the japanese series where he's definitly a lot more rough? Do they just pull the no dankness-thing out of their hat?)

    • @SuperNerdDaniel
      @SuperNerdDaniel  Рік тому +6

      Yeah, no, that's how I kinda figured the logic was with the whole "no darkness in his heart" thing -- like, the way he goes about trying to achieve his goals is unquestionably dubious at best and outright scummy at worst, but he truly believes, to some degree, that his having absolute power would be better for the world that he'd rule over, where he really could create a world devoid of pain and suffering and darkness (though I would imagine that'd be through quelling any potential conflict or resistance to his will with Exodia's power).
      Honestly, it's probably right along with what you'd said, in that his moral compass was so out of whack that he just lacks the ability to comprehend why his actions SHOULD be regrettable, especially given the end result he strived for. Adrian was so sure he was in the right to do this and so deserving of this power that his heart was, indeed, not corrupted by any kind of darkness -- like I said in the video, he's just a NATURAL scumbag, haha.
      Also, as for the Echo thing, the way I'd always kind of interpreted things was, yeah, Echo may very well have encouraged Adrian to pursue his own desires and indulge in what he wanted/believed he deserved, but maybe some part of Echo didn't really realize just what actually achieving that would actually cost either of them. And even when she realized that it would cost her very life with the Exodia thing, she was still so loyal to Adrian, and was so strung along by Adrian appealing to that devotion and love she had for him, that she was still willing to pay that price for him -- though I imagine the regret began to set in when she realized it was going to be a slow, agonizing process to feed Exodia her Duel Energy, and seeing just how completely careless and cold Adrian was being about the whole thing, hence why there was plenty of Echo darkness in Adrian's Deck for Yubel to feed on later.

    The way Adrian treats people (especially Echo) as tools in order to further his goal of being someone that rules over others isn’t new, but Adrian’s utter lack of understanding why his actions are actively harmful just angered me. He’s intelligent enough to see the flaw in his thinking, but his God complex and extreme narcissism prevented him from seeing the truth. He said that he wanted to be a king to help others, but it’s a lie; he wants power solely to have people worship the ground he walks on. I was glad when he lost the duel to Yubel. 23:38 I don't know if you mean in the dub, because in the sub (in the 2 subs I found) Yubel states that Echo was angry because Yubel was trying to kill the man she loves, so even in the end she was only caring about him

    • @SuperNerdDaniel
      @SuperNerdDaniel  9 місяців тому +3

      Admittedly, this line of thought is a bit of extrapolation on my part, because, like you said, the overt statement about it in the subs and the dub was that Echo's darkness stemmed from Yubel threatening to stop Adrian short of realizing his ambition to become the king of the alternate dimension.
      Of course, that's not just for the literal stated reason that Echo loved him and wanted to see him succeed, but also there's the underlying thought that, if Adrian failed, then all of Echo's agony, and Adrian's callousness towards her while she suffered and writhed in pain right in front of him, would've all been for nothing.
      And I'd like to think that Echo would've never flat-out admitted to being resentful towards Adrian for how he treated her towards the end -- even when her spirit(?) appears to Aster towards the end of the Aster/Adrian Duel and tells Aster that she just wanted to prove that she'd do anything for him and that this was "all for the best", it always seemed to me like she was trying real hard to convince herself that this would all be worth it in the end, and that her own suffering ultimately didn't matter as long as Adrian could become king.
      So, really, in regards to Echo's darkness that Yubel feeds on, it's a combination of those things -- the overt stated reason that Yubel was threatening to end Adrian's dream (and therefore Echo's), and me reading into the subtext that Adrian's failure would've made his selfishness, and Echo's unimaginable pain and suffering, completely meaningless.

    Personally...and please don't hate me for this, I feel that Adrian's moves justified things. I'm sure that had Adrian actually defeated Jessie-Yubel (who likely would've pulled shennanigans to keep her host somehow because antag), Adrian would've used the power of Exodia to somehow resurrect Echo. He's a tragic dude sure, but he's nowhere near as bad as say the Orichalcos and what it does to people, or Gozaburo Kaiba for what he did to all the Kaiba boys. Maybe I'm just a sucker for romance stuff. Great video Daniel!

    My favorite part in the sub was yubel who in their twisted/warped semblance of love dissected & mocked amon down to the trash he was. Yubel even straight up made it a point he is a shallow narcissistic king who yes overly relies on exodia but sacrificed all including the ONLY PERSON being echo that truly loved him & will rule over nothing. I do love rewatching this duel along w/ yubel & jadens in GX bc they’re my favorites. Also fun fact amon immediately after killing echo told jaden to go die in the sub. Atleast w/ the sub as my preference yubel has two speaking voices. I will admit the first time it was kinda unsettling to see but it’s a cool touch nonetheless.

    Came to this video after seeing your Golden Nova cameo. And I gotta say thank goodness someone sees Adrian for the annoying, condescending scumbag that he is. Don’t get me wrong, he’s well written (a shitty character fails to elicit emotion (like Hassleberry) but a good one can make you despise them). But I seem to mainly see people discuss Adrian talking about how cool and smart he was but I could only ever see his actions as short sighted and cruel. Heck, if he got everything he ever wanted and somehow won, what then? He’d be stuck ruling over an empty world. Good job, it’s certainly devoid of pain and suffering since Jaden already murdered everyone. Good video, would tear Adrian a new one/10

    And i did not like Shepard’s decision to bring viper to push jaden to his limits.
    Anyway back to him, Adrian felt bland because he just wanted ultimate power. And yeah, i know he wanted to make a work free of suffering but it was still kind of bland to me.

    A small mistake. Echo spirit wasn't filled with anger due to what Adrian did to her. She was upset at Yubel for trying to stop Adrian's dream. You can see through Adrian's last Echo never stopped loving him. Her spirit supported him until the very end

    • @SuperNerdDaniel
      @SuperNerdDaniel  Місяць тому

      @@AlexBlack-ct3nz Eh, I've always kind of interpreted it as a mix of both -- I definitely should've mentioned that because that's what Yubel outright says before the final blow was struck, and of course I don't believe Echo ever stopped loving Adrian, in spite of everything. But you can love someone and still be angry at them for hurting you or using you, and that's always the feeling that I got watching that play out. Of course she wanted to still help Adrian succeed, even during the Yubel Duel, and I think she pushed a lot of that resentment down because, as with when she was still among the living, she put Adrian's dreams first. But Yubel seeing the darkness in people's hearts meant that it couldn't stay buried forever.

      @SuperNerdDaniel Your interpretation is valid. I liked your video, btw. Adrian, as a character, has always been underrated, in my opinion. I really enjoyed him in the show. I understand why you hate him. He is not a good person and definitely deserves what happened to him. One thing I always found interesting was how Yubel couldn't find any darkness in his heart. The way I see it is like this. Adrian was so disconnected from reality, and observed with this dream that in his mind, all things he did were "for the greatest good" It wasn't until the very end of his life reality finally hit him hard. Right when it was way way too late for any apologies. Echo's mistake was falling for the wrong guy. Adrian's was loving his ambition more than his only true friend.

    Something too that I now remembered that also lead to my dislike of Adrian, was his use of Exodia.
    for most, especially Yugi, Exodia represented a Miracle as well as how the bonds of individuals can come together to perform said miracles.
    but after Yugi lost Exodia, every subsequent time we've seen Exodia was from The Rare Hunter, Gozaburo (Exodia Necross), and now Adrian all of whom used Exodia as a means to further their power, Adrian being the worst and in a weird way it's kind of reflective of the real world where Exodia decks are seen with disgust. Sympathetic villains are cool and all, and maybe a little more relatable and realistic, but there are some truly heartless people in this world, and it's so satisfying to see them get what they deserve in the end (or when they come out on top and it's supposed to say something about the decline of society when someone like that can win). And you have to wonder, and I think about this all the time when the people behind big companies destroy the environment for profit: Was it really greed motivating Adrian to do what he did? Man, this video really hits the nail when it comes to why so many people hated that bland piece of nothing bread. I think even Cobra was a better villian. Yeah, at the start he begings like a cartoon villian, but during his duel with Judai we see so much more. A soldier that must have experienced hell during war, finding a new reason to live by saving an abandoned baby, and watching him grow as his son. Yes, his actions were evil, being willing to kill innocent students, but can at least understand part of it because he was a father that wanted his son, the only thing giving him a desire to keep on living, back. And what makes it even moree emotional, is the reaction that we see after he gets shocked by Yubel. With a happy smile on his face, and tears on his eyes, he walks towards what he thinks is his son, joyous thinking that he finally would be reunited with him again, just to walk off a cliff and die. Cobra at least loved his son, and would do everything he could for him, even if it meant killing innocent people. Amon was willing to do the same thing, only because of that greed that killed the person that loved him the most, and ultimately himself.
    Fuck Amon, what a piece of dogshit character.

    And that is why he is such a good character. He is written to be this vile, greedy sociopathic person with just the shread of seeing how he got there to make you understand him, but still despise him.
    Amon Garam was written to be despised, and they succeeded. Its a testament to how well written he is.
    Plus, I admittedly like his Exodia deck. It actually used strategy and not "Imma draw" and had backup plans. It was unique to see. And his Duel with Yubel on a blind first watch was an intense nail biter because it was honestly anyone's game. And Villian VS Villain are just always amazing.

      Oh yeah, just because I hate him doesn't mean I don't get that hating him was the intended result, haha. I think a big part of it for me is that I've always had a very sore spot for people who use and twist others' love for their own gain, so that's part of why I get so heated about him.
      That said, I also really love the final Yubel/Adrian Duel that I talked about in this video -- personal feelings about Adrian aside, he had really clever strategies and he had backup plans for his backup plans. Like, just the fact that he had that whole Fog King/Royal Sword/Fog Castle set up as a THIRD alternative win-con (behind the vanilla Exodia strat and the Exodius The Ultimate Forbidden Lord strat), all of which had the failsafe of letting him go right back to the original Exodia strat if/when it failed? Honestly genius.

      Echo wasn't evil -- she had some darkness in her heart which Yubel used to their own advantage, yes, but the presence of impurity/flaws doesn't make someone inherently evil, because otherwise, anyone who's ever had an impure thought on any level is probably evil, by that logic.
      And besides, Adrian's still ultimately the person responsible for his own demise, because Echo's essence wouldn't have fused itself with his Deck (and therefore been susceptible to Yubel compelling her to attack) if she'd still been alive, and that would be the case had Adrian not made the conscious choice to use her, take advantage of her love for him, and get her killed just so he could have Exodia. Yeah, Yubel compelling Echo's essence to attack and activate Yubel's effect was, technically, what caused Adrian's defeat in that Duel, but the events leading UP to that moment and the circumstances surrounding it were still very much Adrian's own fault.

    Not every person in fiction deserves one.
    I mean Kagemaru got redemption (Kind of and was lame back in season 1, but he also showed up at last second so whatever) Dio I mean Sartorious was possed by the Light of destruction...ok fair.
    Jaden by the supreme King
    Yubel....in all honestly Yubel didn't deserve any kind of redemption or pity or help, but she was so Galaxy brain ahead of everyone and not even Jaden with the supreme king powers and part of Jesses's deck could beat her, he didn't came close to beaten her so in the end he ended fusing with her and that way Yubel was kept in Check but notice how she wasn't redeemed, she still a bit hostile or rather she is harsh against Jaden after it but also does trust his judgement and skills and that's good enough, althought Jaden friends not having any kind of reaction to that information was pretty lame.
    But Adrian? never liked him or cared for him until he "killed" Aster and sacrifice his only friend like you said, it was so good to see Yubel FOR ONCE trash someone that really deserve it.
    Cobra....he was trash but at least I felt bad for him and what Yubel did to him was just hash bloody cold, no chill whatsover but now he is with his son...probably....maybe.....eh....not really? Wow, that's sad. A father that all he wanted was to get his precious boy back but went to far and couldn't tell anymore when to stop or what was right or wrong.
    I am liking all these GX videos, heck I have come to rewarch Gx for the past 3 years in a row, why do I like this anime so much? He is not only selfish I would describe with the next words
    1) Childish: His need for power started because his jealousy for his little brother
    2) Traitor : Not only he betrayed Jaden and Yubel but Echo too

    Adrian should’ve won against yubel when he dueled her, if he attacked hamon instead of uria, he would’ve stopped yubel from summoning chaos phantasm armatyle and beaten her

      @SuperNerdDaniel  Рік тому +1

      Not really? I mean, I guess they have *some* minor similarities, in that they were both rich guys who used some kind of alternative Exodia strategy against a protagonist, but not much beyond that. Like, Gozaburo Kaiba was a prick, but he was basically just a one-dimensional power-hungry evil businessman dickhead for its own sake. Adrian, while still selfish and an incredible asshole (and this is in no way to try and justify his behavior/actions), you could at least say was driven by trauma, abandonment, and neglect.
      I mean, if you see more similarities between the two characters than I do, by all means, please elaborate! But I honestly don't see a lot aside from the couple of things I mentioned before, haha.

    Ehhhhh on the Yubel part
    It wasnt a "For some reason" type of deal, the sub and dub states why Yubel became that way
    Yubel was protective over Jaden to the point where if someone made him sad they would make them..."go to sleep" (Make them comatose) to the point where Jaden couldnt have friends, and due to that, he had asked Kaiba Corp if alongside the Neo-Spacian Cards he made and the Destiny HERO cards Endo (Aster) father made, if Kaiba would make an exception and make it where Yubel can be coated by the same energies, and whereas the Neo-Spacians and Neos became good because of the good part of the Cosmos soaking in, Yubel got snatched up by the Light of Destruction, screaming in Jadens dreams to help them to the point where his parents intentionally sealed away his memories to hide their screams, all the pain Yubel had to endure came back to them as a way to justify that Jaden loved them, that Love is Pain, and to show Jaden their ultimate love for him, they would use Super Polymerization to fuse the 12 Dimensions together and destroy everything by summoning Super Fusion God, and make Jaden feel the ultimate pain, before Jaden actually stopped it by activating a Trap Card beforehand that gave him the ability to choose the targets for Super Poly, instead fusing Yubel with Neos (His Spirit) in turn fusing Jaden with Yubel so they can be together forever

    • @SuperNerdDaniel
      @SuperNerdDaniel  Рік тому +2

      I know it wasn't just "for some reason", I just didn't want to focus on Yubel's dynamic with Jaden too closely for this because the video was about Adrian (not to mention that Adrian hardly seemed to even CARE about why Yubel was so obsessed with Jaden until he asked about it during their second Duel, and even then it wasn't even that important to him except to try and make sense of the machinations of this monster he was facing, so really, if anything, the "for some reason" was kind of meant to be taken from Adrian's perspective).

    We still don't know about what exactly happened to him after season 3. And probably never will be

    • @SuperNerdDaniel
      @SuperNerdDaniel  Рік тому +2

      Yeah, it's so weird that he (and Echo, for that matter) never came back, even just to be written off properly. All the other Season 3 transfers were written off or used in some way in Season 4, even if, like with Jim Cook, it was just long enough for us to know that he got shipped back to his own Academy. I don't even remember anyone so much as MENTIONING Adrian throughout Season 4, either.
