Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy (1966 - 1999) was a model, publicist for Calvin Klein and the wife of the American prince, John F. Kennedy Jr., the son of John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Onassis.
Caroline and her husband died in a plane crash on July 16, 1999.
It was a small private plane, the pilot of which was her husband, John John, the son of President Kennedy.
Bessette-Kennedy's older sister, Lauren, was in the plane with them and also died.
Carolyn and John were married in 1996. They had no children.
Caroline's wedding dress is considered an example of the highest style and today too.

Nowadays people talk more than ever about sustainable fashion, but back in the day Carolyn was already practicing the preach, even if perhaps not out of environmental consciousness. A natural (or close enough) sense of proportion and style, learning on the go as she mingled with the best in the fashion industry, an interest in a wide range of arts and what was in at the moment, a relentless work ethic (she worked her way through college, always having a part-time job) and yet an overall natural, unfaked nonchalance about it all secured her, perhaps without even consciously wishing to, a timeless aura. She is said to not have had many clothes, but the ones she wore were simple in design, exquisitely tailored and within a narrow range of colours. And from this self-imposed fashionable austerity, grown over time in parallel with her relationship to Jr., she emerged. The behind-the-scenes struggles were not known, her funny character was mostly revealed to her closest acquaintances, only sometimes to be squeezed out of chance in paps’ photos, and the public went on dreaming about her and her mysteriousness - this being the image of a woman she was not 100%.
From everything I read or watched about her (and her husband), I get the feeling their marriage was kind of a mirage (or at least to her, she seemed to have entered it more along the lines of 'see how it goes' & 'hope for the best' while he was the smitten one, especially when she didn't say 'Yes' from the get-go), yet both tried to make some sort of stable base out of it, one they never really knew the taste of, while growing up, but in bits. And for some reason this worked up to a point; I’ll take a wild guess here and say each of them became annoyed with the other’s inability to give the support one expected to be given. In MBTI terminology, I believe John-John was an ESFP and Carolyn an ISTP, and this isn’t a great combo (in Human Design I daresay he was a Generator and she a Projector). I know, any relationship can work as long as there’s communication, willingness and commitment, but even this hits a glass ceiling when the results simply don’t justify the effort put into it. Perhaps his throwing in social engagements in no time or promising to show up, thus making her cancel her own plans, and then not showing up was a problem, as it was staying up late at the gym while she waited at home; perhaps her heart was still partly elsewhere (the Bergin love story), as someone in the earlier comments said, as well as the constant paps hounding even when picking up their dog's poop. Also, she was not working anymore at a job that seemed a natural fit for her personality and interests, and the public scrutiny that took her by storm was just such a huge thing (compared to the one-on-one or smaller group thing she was used to and was said to excel in at her work). It is believed she said to a friend that certain public attention is expected and that’s okay, but NOT what it turned out to be. Then the fretting about to have or not to have children (he knew he wanted them, she was unsure once again - whether because she was really not that into him beyond the point of liking him or she really doubted that having a child in a fishbowl, where she already lived, was a smart thing to do), plus the usual bumps and detours when a spouse or the other feels unloved, unsupported or unseen At the Right Time. Plus the drugs they were both said to have taken in the company of their respective friends - probably to avoid the pain both felt.
Jackie O. may have been right when she made Jr. promise her he will not to try his hand at flying. It was said he was a good pilot, albeit a novice, yet not trained enough to fly by instruments only. Add a brand new plane he has never flown solo before, the impatience of arriving too late at the destination, an ADD diagnosis (people, too, said he was an easily distracted kind of person), and the bad weather that not even a seasoned pilot could handle too well, plus anything else that may have happened in the cockpit (arguments etc.) we will never know of. Three people died and this could have been prevented if unnecessary haste had been taken out of the context.
Jackie may have been right about the idea of a magazine venture, too. From what I’ve read, JFK Jr. enjoyed more the interviews’ side of the business where it was said he was quite good and the publicity thing he did to promote 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦. But aside that, it was said he felt quite miserable about the unpleasant insides that running a publication, and especially one of such high aspirations, invariably implies, and the magazine itself was said to not have garnered the respect of the journalists’ community as a serious publication. He didn't have any training in journalism whatsoever. Yet, people in the industry now recognize that although largely unsuccessful at the time, the merging of politics and entertainment had been a brilliant idea, even ahead of its time, and the effort to make more people become interested in politics through these means (and also the effort to not give up even when he already lost 10 millions because of it) was laudable in itself. Unfortunately, the perseverance to continue may have been the kind where one realizes they lost too much to give it up just like that and unconsciously set themselves up for the deepest pit of them all. Knowing when to quit requires flair, I guess, just as it does for knowing when to push forward. Maybe Jackie’s advice, to know the basics before diving in at such stakes, was not bad. Or who knows, perhaps he would have turned things around and done something even better out of it; he was about to meet in the following weeks prior to his death with some people in the industry who agreed to find a solution with him.
His mother may have been wrong, though, about the acting part. I think he went to Law because that was insidiously presenting itself to him from everyone around. Trying to be you in a world that doesn’t care about the individual but about its own expectations of how only certain things look best on you while unfolding must have taken its toll in the end. The proof is that he practiced for only a few months, despite being passionate about acting, which may have actually been his true, missed calling.
Whenever I see photos of them and consider what I read and watched, I see two kids not taking themselves very seriously while having fun while trying to support each other the best they know. The fact that their story continues to be famous is because it gives people that sugar rush of dreaminess that enveloped it from its very beginning. They look timeless together because their story is one of archetypes - a prince and a princess, albeit each an untypical one, at the dawn of a new century, of a brave new world -, and stands for something many find alluring - rise and unexpected fall on a public background of glamour, style and privilege.

Either Jr. had ADD or he had Dyslexia. SOMEthing was a problem for him. Jackie ran around from school to school behind him ~ talking to the school staff about Jr.'s lack of achievement. Carolyn could have been a model, but I'm afraid she never got used to living in his fishbowl of media coverage, poor thing. I seriously wonder if their marriage would have made it. I saw pictures of them fighting in a public park. Two spoiled kids, both screaming for the attention each craved.

I always could tell that she had her eyes done, upper blepharoplasty, and possibly a tip of the nose refinement. To me, the eyes changed tremendously, and gave her a very sophisticated, distinctive look. And definitely she lost a lot of weight making her very sleek and modelesque. One of the most beautiful women, I’ve been obsessed with her since the 90s. Didn’t realize she had a serious coke addiction, very sad.

I notice the thinner she became, the blonde increased in her hair & her eyebrows also became thinner & lighter in color. What is that about? She was a natural Beauty to begin with, but I guess some women can't see or appreciate who they are naturally. So sad both she & JFK, Jr gone too soon
Somewhere someone made the decision to make her thinner, paler, MORE of everything and less of her naturally beautiful full hair and eyebrows. Her hair became flat and brittle. Her eyebrows were plucked almost to non existence. Her face looked thinned in a unhealthy way. She wore no eyeliner or mascara making her eyes look pale and watery. She simply became someone else. If he fell in love with her wonderfully healthy look why did she transform into that pale shadow of herself? She went beyond wasp.
Carolyn made the decision to alter her looks. This is multi-faceted. Some of it likely stemmed from plain old insecurity. John's previous girlfriend Darryl Hannah was tall, thin, and bleached blonde. Carolyn was not immune to feelings of inadequacy or insecurity. Additionally, the styles changed considerably from the early 90s to the late. Earlier 90s was supermodel curves, bigger brows, bigger hair. As the 90s progressed the waif look was in, with straighter, often sleek hair, thin brows. Carolyn was accordingly never huge on eye makeup... when you see pics of her with it on, they are modeling pics, someone else did her makeup in those cases. She supposedly preferred concealer and lipstick primarily. I do see she wore mascara for events, and that is all she needed. Her eyes were plenty striking enough on their own. She has been said to have told a girlfriend that boys often noticed if you made up your eyes, but they were rarely aware of artfully applied concealer. I love both of her looks, John fell in love with darker-haired, curvier Carolyn. But like many women I suspect she forgot about this and was striving, to a degree, to be what she *thought* he wanted.

A truly lovely vid, complementing music, and much appreciated without commentary was the definite way to go. Commentary by anyone would be useless unless they had met Carolyn, as otherwise it's just opinions of others "perception" of her with mistruths, disinfo, the unkind way the media had manipulated ppls perception of Carolyn or just speculation of what happened, or could've been etc. Unless it's directly from someone with first knowledge and intimately related friends or family. But it's wonderful to see these pics of Carolyn as she changed and blossomed into the woman she wanted to be. From a naturally gorgeous girl from Connecticut, into the timeless, modern chic New Yorker. Carolyn always looked destined for an amazingly fantastic life and even if, tragically, she only lived with her true love, none other than Prince of Camelot John, for an initially tenderly harsh at times.. of 5 years and precious 3 of marriage..they truly were fated for a marriage made in Heavenly peace...together.

It's sad. She looked like she was very stressed out in the last few years of her life. I think she just didn't feel the same way about him that he felt about her. It's clear from the way he is beaming in every single picture with her that he truly loved and adored her. But I think she found his extended family overbearing and off-putting and she was sick of the media and public's crazed fascination with John Jr., which she found herself sucked into. There were also all the horrible things being said about her just because she was a woman with some self-esteem and confidence, and she dared be her own person. But all the crap really wore her down and she looked very tired in the end.

She was a drug addict. The stress of being a Kennedy certainly did not help the situation. She was a very demanding and tempermental creature which is probably a result of the addiction. They appeared picture perfect, but their marriage was on the rocks.

Growing up, i had a friend whose parents relocated their family from Denmark to Texas ...
They were the coolest kindest most fasionable beauitiful down to earth family i have ever met.
They moved here a 5 member family and had 4 more daughters (2 sets of twins). Point is, every single family member was Gorgeous. The girls especially.. even their mother could have graced the cover of a magazine.
Blonde beautiful eyes white porcelain skin that actually turns brown and not red ...ever ... blue eyes and bodies that any fashion designer would die for to be able to dress ....

He had heaps of experience to fly solo, and at night as well. He had done his instrument training, and double the amount of instructor training flights than is even required. He had made that same flight to Hyannis multiple times at night. Where it got different was having to drop Lauren (?) off at Martha’s Vinyard on the way. He put one wrong number in the radio signal for Martha’s vinyard as he was not as familiar with that aerodrome and that was the beginning of a sequence of events that caused the crash.
His ankle/ foot /boot had absolutely nothing to do with anything.

Certainly not his mother's "only wish" that he not fly. Mother's wish to protect us from all harm. Men, particularly, sometimes engage in risky sports, but we also admire their bravery and prowess. We love them & don't wish to box them in.
Most of my family are flyers.(I was too afraid due to a horrific crash & really no interest.) We know profound loss from this "sport." My dad felt, based on publicly available FAA information, that John was skilled enough but that night was 1) in pain with his ankle injury & 2) simply tired. A very bad combination. Many pilots undertake such flights with far greater handicaps. There wasn't anything really daunting about the flight.
The accumulation of flight hours /experience makes for a good flyer, & John was a new pilot. The media has made much of his inexperience as "the cause."
The FAA is profoundly strict as to who may fly, how & when. He met FAA criteria to safely undertake this particular flight with his level of skill & experience. Sometimes awful things happen. I know the agony of a flight over water, at night, with 4 family members on board, going down. Many years later we still cannot stop thinking, "Dear God. What really was going on in the cabin???" 2 of the 4 aboard were licensed, experienced pilots. Like John's flight, we will never know.
My dad & brother told me that John's crash was likely over so quickly that nobody probably endured terror or even physical pain. That is just their opinion, but I trust it. Sure do miss them being with us - JFK, Jr., his beautiful wife and sister-in-law. ❤️
Sadly, he was a terrible pilot with an excellent plane, who had no business in the skies! His wife was over 2 hours getting to the airport (that says a lot about respect) and he ignored PIREPS and NOTAMS that told him NOT to fly into bad weather. He was NOT instrument rated and had no business flying in bad weather! It was fatal, as expected. Someone at the airport even told him not to go, but people like that are used to doing exactly as they please!
NTSB investigative reports proved there was nothing wrong with the aircraft, but the pilot lost his situational awareness in the bad visibility and crashed due to spatial disorientation.

I must be the only person that didn’t think she was beautiful looking. I think she had great legs. But I always thought she had the strangest face! that very long thin nose with a bump in the middle of it, hollow cheeks, thin pale eyebrows and pale eyes, long pointy chin, and I always thought she looked a bit like an albino with a weird face… I never thought she was a classic beauty but she worked on her looks a lot to make the most of them. And clearly John thought she was beautiful as do most people. Just never understood it, but then I don’t think Jennifer Anniston is beautiful and everyone thinks she is, and I think Angelina Jolie is a classic beauty and stunning and so many people disagree. I think JFK jr was definitely AMAZING looking, so I always thought they looked like a very mismatched pair. Oh Please ,Carolyn Bessette was not that in love with John Kennedy junior , if at all , she liked him well enough but that was all . She was still holding a candle for her first love . Cant remember his name , but that was the reason the marriage had its struggles , it had nothing to do with the media attention she was getting after her marriage to John . In addition to that , I cant for the life of me see what he saw in her in the first place . She is less than average looking especially at the time john married her . She didn't want children (John did) because I suspect she felt the marriage wasn't going to last , her mind and heart were elsewhere . . It is well known she was a difficult person and a moody one . They were in fact complete opposites . John was very much in love with , He was faithful , loyal , a one woman man and totally committed to her . He deserved so much better than this woman . He made some bad decisions and they plunged into the ocean, killing all three of them. JFK Jr. was a dumb inexperienced pilot, who made some bad decision which cost him his life and those aboard.
