Watched it last night and was blown away. I would never have thought a dark Afrikaans musical set in South Africa's apartheid-era army would be one of the highest quality movies I've seen this year... more South African stories must be told at this level of excellence.
Where did you watch it?
Where did you watch it?
I was able to watch this film at a film festival in Germany and I absolutely loved it! The acting, directing, story & camera work was brilliant! Kanarie is in my top 5 of films I've seen this year! Really looking forward to watch it again somewhere!
This movie really showed how excellent South African movies can be made... unfortunately I missed the first couple of minutes of it but I was still able to catch the drift... definitely top tier quality movie 🍿. I have no idea where I'll find it now coz satellite TV only played it once and never again 😔😔😔.
Ein wunderbarer Film!!!!
In the military of those days, all branches used the stars. The Navy to navigate by, the Army to sleep under and the Airforce, to judge their accommodation by.
SOOO GOOOD! Want to watch it again! :)
This is the greatest film I have seen produced locally. Anyone who disagrees probably flys a vierkleur at home and owns all Leon Schusters films on DVD. It was poignant and beautifully acted. The art direction is world class and it has a fantastic soundtrack. Bravo. Proud of you Schalk.
So you never heard of "Tsotsi" or "Noem My Skollie"?
Very good films. But the gangster film genre has been done. This was something different for a change.
Martin why insult everyone who dislikes this movie to me that shows that you believe it's your way or the highway.
Ever heard of Pasolini?
Dit lyk wonderlik! What a brave and touching project. I'm so proud of new Afrikaans filmmakers who are breaking ground and making important films like this.

Wow amazing, this is a south africa and there is not a single black man ! Are we supposed to feel bad for the gays like me treated as normal human being just asked to do their duty as men, or are we supposed to remember that at that time indigenous black people of south africa were barely allowed to exist in their own country as human beings.
As a gay man i find that movie nauseating. The epitome of white privilege and white people's problem (and i am Scandinavian). This movie means that being gay in the military was basically worse than being Black in SA under the apartheid !
Yoh, bruh
This movie was meant to show what this gent was going through being in the military and being gay. 😐It has nothing to do with race..
@@anonymous-vw3vl In the army which supported the apartheid. So basically he put his sexuality about the oppression of an entire group of people in the own homeland !
They should have called the movie, self-indulgence and self-righteousness rather than Kanarie !
@@anonymous-vw3vl Or "Gay Lives matter"
@@kachi2782 Oooohhhh, you gave yourself away there, you fucking little homophobe. And a racist to boot. Or are you one of those little creatures who thinks only whites can be racist?
@@kachi2782
I'm a gay man of Indian origins and your comment makes me sick
The film is set in the military where there were no blacks. It wouldn't work with a non white cast
And how racist of you to point out that there are no blacks when you didn't notice the absence of Indians !
Bleh
