- In 1993, the Phillips Collection created an educational program based on the Great Migration series of painting by artist Jacob Lawrence. The program, funded in part by the Humanities Council of Washington, DC, produced a documentary film featuring interviews with Lawrence, and a unique analysis of his striking visual representation of history.
Whenever I see a Jacob Lawrence posting, I want to add something to his legacy. When I was an art student at the University of Washington in the Seventies, I had a cranky art teacher who insisted that he knew what was art and what was not. I was convinced. While discussing this with the Dean of the Art School, a man stuck his head through the door and said, "I'll take him on", meaning he agreed to tutor me one-on-one for that quarter. Mr. Lawrence was the most generous, encouraging, inspiring professor of my entire college experience. He was a great artist AND a great teacher.
So much beautiful history that was not in our history books or any books in my school. Thank you for sharing Mr. Jacobs story and art.
Absolutely Brilliant and Amazing! I really wish I learned this as a young kid.
So glad that even now, 21 years later, we are able to be given insight into his motivations and style thanks to this recorded interview.
Adding Mr Jacob Lawrence, eminent thinking artist, to my list of influential intellects
Thank You for uploading this. This is a beautiful illustration of our history during that period.
This is absolutely wonderful! Thank you for sharing this important part of history.
I learned about Lawrence through my humanities class because it played a part in the Harlem Renaissance. So amazing to see how he was able to make a stamp in history through is thought provoking art pieces.
We are studying Jacob Lawrence in my Visual Arts class, and he is a very good artist.
Thanks for this.
