Billy, the Canadian testpilot who did a lot of F-35 development, said on the Figther Pilot Podcast, that they were already working on automatic refueling. They used the code and experiences from the F-35B hover mode, and futher developed it to work behind the tanker. They made it work seanlessly in the sim, but real world testing revealed that the "AI" couldent compensate for turbulence. Maybe it can if it can use turbulance data from the MQ-25? Would require pretty fast data transfer though.
But hey, the farming industry is already doing this on a lower scale. Your grain cart tractor can connect to your combine, and fully automaticly unload the combine on the go. Combine slows down or speed up, tractor follow. Combine turns, tractor follows.

If you control an aerial drone while in the air from another aircraft, can you double the flight hours in your log book? 😉

Lmao, good question. Imma call the FSDO to see in a civil sense. SIC and PIC at the same time.

If operating under FAA regulations I think that would require a waiver. It wouldn't apply to a tanker but if the UAS were a small UAS under part 107 the regulation 107.25 would apply

@@jerseyshoredroneservices225 im more curious about hours logging. At least under the current statutes. And operating a large commercial drone, as SIC.

I don't know if they have a regulation to cover that. I think drones that are too heavy for part 107 Need to be certified under one of the other existing parts. I think that's what companies like Amazon, Zipline, etc. have done with their heavy drones. They get a book full of waivers and exemptions for things that don't apply without a pilot on board.

Isn't part of the reason why there's 17 new SuperHornets on order because of the tanker role eating up airframe hours? Of course F-35C delays aren't helping.
I heard talk of launching tankers with just the center ARS (Aerial Refueling System aka "buddy store") with drogue and hose reel-which also carries 330 gallons(2240 pounds) and and single 480 gallon(3260pounds) EFT under each wing, instead of the usual 4, 480 gallon EFTs and single center 330gallon ARS for 15,300 pounds external or 29,000lbs of total onboard fuel.
Sure that would reduce airframe stresses, but you're still burning a launch/recovery, airframe hours and lose 960 gallons/6528lbs of fuel capacity. F-18 has a 32,000lbs empty weight and a MTOW of 66,000lbs.
I still think it's impressive that the F-35C can carry just over 20,000 pounds of fuel, all internal and also has an empty weight of 32,000lbs-34,500lbs(depending on source) with an MTOW of 70,000lbs.
20,000 pounds of fuel is exactly what the F-14s with combined full internal and 2 external 267 gallon/2,000 pound.tanks could carry along with its 73,400 lbs MTOW and 43,000lb empty weight..
As always the availability of "go-go juice" is a key priority, even moreso with the "pivot to Asia". These uncrewed tanker drones really seem to make sense. Any tanker gas is going to be a major target.
    Thank you Gents!

The test went well, except for the part where the Hornet pilot got asked by the MQ-25 to prove he's not a robot. "How many squares have bicycles ?!"

Isn’t the point of drone tankers to free up pilots for “attack/defense” functions?

OrganicTanking is desperately needed by the CVW. The same could be said for organic ASW.

Interesting. I knew eventually this would get automated. Always enjoyed F-18 drags. Trail the hose…stow the hose. Easy money.

From the E model Apache side let me say flying two aircraft at once is not the best idea. My opinion.

Just a humble opinion but if you rebuilt the A6 as a drone tanker it would be a better choice. Considering it already has done tanker duties with pilots and has some fighter ability for defense. They also were useful in electronic warfare. It seems a major waste of funds to always want a total new airframe design when proven ones are available. Not saying to use the old A6 but build on the existing design, much like the change between the hornet and super hornet. Boeing hasn't deviated in the 700 series much even between groups. It seems every military plane is a custom job start to finish and no two are as close as any 727 to a 747 or 777. I'm not against new ideas so much as wasting so much on something when off the shelf parts and designs can do the same job at a fraction of the price. The commercial lines shows improvement over near a century of slow gradual improvements on existing frames while the military side each decade they want to retire the old and replace with something that cost ten times as much each time.

Who determines weather avoidance on the track?
NASA has already done hands free F-18 probe and drogue refueling.
Lets not forget Yo-Yo tanker ops for TIC/CAS.
