  • An ancient Scottish song about the destruction of a village during clan warfare.
Whenever we sing this song - really sing it - we find the weather changes.
It is a dark tale of fear and destruction, revenge and loss, all wrapped up in a false jacket of positive action.
    The crows are crawing.
Filmed by Alaric King and Dan Fryer, March 2013.

I've been watching this vid solidly for the last 24 hours. It is proof,if proof were needed, that Ed & Will are the finest traditional 2-part singers in Britain today. There are not words enough to do justice to the quality of their singing. I must also congratulate Alaric & Dan for their brilliant recording of this performance.

@@WillWalking There are two answers the Milltown of Auchindoun is still there several houses and a converted mill, it's located on the Huntly to Dufftown road and is very accessible .It sits at the bottom of of a hill but at the top of this hill you can see the castle to the south. The second is the castle itself which sits off the Rhynie to Dufftown road and its this that the song refers to most likely as it was the scene of much infighting between the Gordons and the Forbses and of course Willie MacKintosh. The castle sits on a iron age , Pictish, fort rampart and presently a farm and a house are nearby although there would presumably have been houses in the past to service what was a strategic castle overlooking and guarding at least two hill passes for the Gordon's. I was up there recently and have photos.

The more I watch this, the more I appreciate it. The texture of your voices is so complementary - like, yet unlike. But it's also how you lean on and support each other's performance. The effortless way you escalate the song together and just how in tune you are. Musically, of course (not that it even matters that much!). But much more than that. It's the pauses between the voice that show the connection almost more than anything else. I hope you're still singing together.

First time I have heard this sung by male vocalists! I can appreciate the quality that is brought to this song, by the male voices. This is quite a beautiful and unique version. I love the versions that are done by female vocalists, also. The contrast between the two, is beautiful to hear.

A breathtaking performance. Just one wee criticism. The words are "You've burnt your crop and tint your wings." this refers to the crows bring their throats and scorching their wings. Head is pronounced with a long E.

    • @WillWalking

Thanks! Our pronunication struggled with the fact that we're Kentish, about as far from Scotland as possicle in these Isles. And we were never entirely sure if we should be copying thw dialect, or re-presenting the songs within our own dialect tradition. The same with songs that had archaic terms, often we'd shift them into something people could understandm because that was the point, to communicate the story.
The lyric we used 'tint your wine' we were taught (third-hand) from a Scottish traveller singer, for whom the meaning was apparently that all Auchidoun's wine or whisky in barrel was now spoiled, as significant a loss to the community as the burned crops. A knockout, killer blow. It makes a bit more sense to me than some crows burning their wings, crows are no fools!
But also, there are surely as many valid variations as there are singers. It's a living tradition!
Thanks for your suggestions and kind words. It's a fierce old song to sing, and I haven't sung it with Ed in an age. When we were walking together, this song always seemed to change the weather!
      All the best!

Will, thanks for getting back to me. We’d like to use the full song and clippets of you both singing if that’s ok. Seen lots of other versions of the song but none to match this one. It would be mostly used for our intro. If you want to have a look at our work to get the jist of what we do, you can just type in Scottish Ghost Adventures to see our UA-cam channel or you could alternatively visit our website at www.scottishghostadventures.com Thanks again and great work!!
