We use rods, but we also fish like this all the time here in Puerto Rico. Your hands get used to it and you learn how to use them like using drag on a spinning reel. It's a great sensation to fight a big fish with your hands like that. I caught a 90lb Cubera Snapper by hand line in the late 90's.
