I would argue that though damon is a big part of gorillaz, he's not integral at all times
Anthony, have you checked Classroom yet? Ms. Gonzalez posted a new assignment for Tuesday, she wants us to translate the USSR Anthem to spanish. Do you have a group yet? We can do it together if you want.
Overall I feel like if Song Machine were an album, this would be one of the more deep cuts off it. Still a great track, not feeling it as much as the other three, but definitely enjoyed it.
I’m loving all of these new songs. While The Now Now and Humanz were some of my favorite releases of their respective year, but this album could be one of my albums of the decade.
“Fela Kuti, who Tony had been known to work with”. A bit more than that - he’s was Fela’s other half, his music (and Afrobeat entirely) would have been nothing without Tony. He put the ‘beat’ in Afrobeat. But if an understatement there
the tracks so far have been progressively getting better, and not just that but every track sounds better the more you listen to it! I've been addicted to Song Machine so far, and atm this is my most favorite, fantastic drumming and Skepta's rapping compliments the beat so sooooo well.
I’m going to be honest, with the latest Gorillaz songs, it has become more apparent to me that the best way I can describe Damon’s work is that the first time you hear it, it may sound dissonant or odd or just flat out bad, but the more you look at it, the more you think “damn, this man is a genius.” It’s definitely true that most of the songs that are an instant vibe the moment the synth kicks in or they lay down an amazing hook, those songs typically become the most well-known and best received tracks of his albums. But the more I scour into his work, the more I can appreciate his methods and how well and uniquely he works with others
The drumming is pretty catchy and impressive since Tony Allen was 80 or was close to 80 years old when he played them. I haven't heard much of Tony's work before this one (outside of his work from one of Damon's side projects, The Good The Bad and The Queen) but there's some very interesting stuff here. I can't wait to hear what else Tony has done in the past.
I like to think of this Song Machine as an album slowly being fed to us. In that respect, I'd argue against the Humanz criticism. The majority of these tracks do have Damon in them prominently. This has the potential to be more like Plastic Beach, which had some songs where Damon was absent too. White Flag, Sweepstakes, Cloud of Unknowing. However, I do also accept that depending on how these tracks pan out, this may not age well. And at the end of the day, I never listened to Humanz all the way through, so it never left a bad taste in my mouth. Great vid Anthony, love you. :)
I hasn't heard of Tony Allen behore I saw news of his death, but I really appreciate all that he represented and what he did with his career and his platform. May his memory and talent live on.
Can you review Skepta’s album ignorance is bliss and insomnia - I’m from the uk and love these two albums, just really want to hear what you have to say about both. You gave skepta quite a bit of props so I’m curious
I’m imagining (since this isn’t episode 4) that this is either a bonus track, as some people said, or like an interlude between episodes. Personally I really like the idea that this is a short track that works as a segue between tracks
Re structure : plausibly this wasn't entirely finished and hadn't had the final arrangement and video etc. but they released early because of Tony Allen's death.
Nothing is confirmed but I have a feeling this song isn’t “finished”. They released it due to the unfortunate passing of Tony Allen and I think that’s why there’s a lack of 2D and it’s heavily focused on the “simplistic” vocals of Skepta. It feels like there’s more of a focus on the drums then on the vocals. The artwork related to this song is of the Gorillaz band members remembering Tony and there’s not an “official” vibe to it. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a finished re-release and a video later on. Either way the drumming was beautiful on this song. RIP Tony Allen
I highly doubt they intended to add 2Ds vocals. There are dozens of Gorillaz songs where 2D doesn't appear once plus Damon is the front man so they would've recorded his vocals before the feature's voices.
Samantha Chrisman I agree with you. I mainly wanted to introduce an alternative idea explaining the lack of 2D. With the very sudden passing of Tony Allen and the seemingly random release, I think there is still a chance that this isn’t the final version and that this was released as a way to respect him. I also feel like this song doesn’t fit with the rest of the songs that have been released on this album. They’ve all had 2D either on lead vocals or in the chorus. Having him be absent entirely doesn’t really feel like it fits with the rest of the songs.
