I was recently told by an Eastern European friend that Gulbis died and was pronounced dead by the ATP after he flatlined.
I later realized he was referring to Gulbis’ career.
To avoid future miscommunication, I taught him to instead say that Gulbis’ career went “into the shitter”. An expression which he now uses with disturbing frequency - often to describe tournament concessions which don’t live up to what he remembered in previous years.

I don't like Munar, but he got royally screwed here. Ok, the second one is very difficult for the umpire to see, but she couldn't even quote the rule properly.
Munar is a real petty asshole. The racket hit was really reaching asking her to call that one out. If he could have returned the shot he would have had a winner but the point was over before the racket brushed the bottom of net maybe.
Yes the umpire should have looked at the big screen and saw it was clearly NOT UP and reversed her call. But he's such a whinner, Jeezus.
Everything should be challengeable. The sport is stupid for limiting what players can challenge. They have visual, audio, hawkeye, and slow-mo replay. Use them. The fossils that are in charge of the rule book can't die off quickly enough

Eventually, he will win or lose the match and the team should make him feel comfortable not just force and stay. See the coach of Medvedev, he sometimes quit the bench for the sake of the result. That is their job. They can as well go have a drink and think how to communicate better next time.

I love the kind of situations like Munar's on this video (it could be any other ATP player, actually):
- Random player commits 37 unforced errors, 7 double-faults and uncountable tactical and strategic errors through the match.
- Same player spends 2 hours and a half complaining about how the single error made by the umpire has cost him the match.
Umpire errors can cost someone a match though, what's your point?
@@vicdu1995 completely agree and it was two big mistakes by the ref. loosing two points when you should normally win them can surely turns you crazy. The ref could just admitted her errors seeing the screen and that could calm the situation but she decided to just call him crazy in some way. Not a good ref at all.
13:27 "Incredible sportsmanship"....it is but only because it's so rare! This should be something ALL players should acknowledge if they know for sure there hasn't been a fault and they've gained an unfair advantage. I'd like to see it more. Much more.

I'm Spanish and I hate Munar's attitude. Even when he is right he uses to cry a lot and have an unsportsmanlike conduct. If we add his wall style of play Jaume is one of the less enjoyables TOP100 players to watch and follow.

@@MrBolaextra Cómo? a pesar de no ser mi estilo de juego favorito, considero muy meritorio y valoro muchísimo a los jugadores que llegan a la élite sin tener armas que les permitan generar winners, teniendo que suplir esa carencia por táctica y fuerza mental. Mi crítica a Jaume es más bien en cuanto a actitud en la pista muchas veces, como ejemplo ahora mismo acaba de reclamar una bola en su partido vs Vavassori que claramente entró. Ojalá siga los pasos de Zapata, que también en pista tenía un fuerte carácter pero parece que va madurando y calmándose en los momentos clave.

Just as Tsitsipas goes up a notch in my book, the last 6 months or so, with his gameplaying antics and his better sportsmanship nowadays, he said this. I wouldn't mind being a top 10 player with the few weapons i have. That's just me.
I feel EXACTLY the same as you. I was warming to him, especially after the encounter he had with Kyrgios in Wimbledon to be honest. The thing that makes his whole 'few tools' comment worse is that he aimed it at one of the nicest players on tour in Rublev. He has apparently apologised to him in private so fairplay to him for that but yeah, it made me side eye him all over again as there was no need for it.

Also, I don't think he's any different from the few tools any other ATP player but Nadal, Djokovic and maybe Alcaraz have. If you value skills, you have to follow the WTA; the ATP is everything about who's faster and who hits harder.
Yeah, people don't change their true character that quickly. Just get a bit better at masking it sometimes. Tsitsipas pulls off some pretty awesome tennis at times and it makes me really want to like him, and then sometimes he will really say something kind but it's just so clear that deep down he's a total a**hole you would hate to cross paths with in any everyday setting.
Lol, better sportsmanship. As if. Twistypast KNEW he had multiple injuries & still played in Turin long enough to keep Hubi from actually being able to compete outright. Alcaraz got injured in 2022 & didn't play in Turin which allowed Fritz to compete, win two RR matches, & reach the SF. Between the elbow injury, the shoulder injury, & the back injury, EZ Pass should not have played Turin. Hubi could've replaced him and actually delivered, but Olive Oil is too rancid & petty for such sportsmanship.

Gulbis has to be one of the most annoying dudes on circuit. Crying all the time.
Much as I've found these videos entertaining the last few years, I'm aware that anger management and self-control is not what it used to be. If memory serves me well, if a top player had smashed their racket with such violence and vigour in the 70s and 80s it would be a significant sign of a particularly fiery character. In recent years I've got used to seeing the temper flare-ups of Djokovic, Ostapenko, Paire and others resulting in them digging their racket into the court with force and breaking it. NOW it looks like everyone's doing it.
Berrettini now?? Shapovalov now? It's becoming just 'one of those things' now.
Whatever happened to 'the Federer effect'? Containing and settling oneself within a match. We all know how Roger began his career with such a bad temper. For the last twenty years though, he gave NOTHING away of any turmoil or anger in his head. It CAN be done. You don't HAVE to smash your racket up.
Course if you're Ernest Gulbis, then it's not even worth discussing. The man's a child.
You must have selective memory, because I have seen Federer break rackets, speak badly to umpires, and be a very sore loser in press conferences. Nadal, on the other hand, has never broken a racket.

He was absolutely frustrated due to several mistakes made by the umpire during his match... but yes, he doesn't keep his temper...
He can’t handle the extreme pressure of big time tennis. It’s no joke.
it’s the pressure of now being “expected” to win more matches than before. similar to when a new WTA player wins a big title or grand slam and then going into a slump right after. when you’re not expected to win anything, you can play freely and enjoy your matches. when you’re expected to win, you feel like you can’t enjoy as much because you are thinking of all the contracts/endorsements that you need to maintain etc.
Yoshi knows he's too short to really be a threat to the top players, so when things go wrong in an important match, he freaks out. Ends up getting eliminated early like he knew he would. The guy has won two 250s in 10 years. He's your standard Asian pusher who takes opponents to three sets only to get gassed before the finish line.

Don’t understand how Aurelie Tourte is umpiring slam finals as she constantly makes huge mistakes. Wu celebrating twice after winning points by cheating is poor sportsmanship too. Munar was hard done by here.
Now they don't have to do almost anything since are line calls are automated. And the few things they have to do, they do it wrong.
I see many people support Wu and ump against Munar. I mean... read the rules of tennis. The first one thanks to the sportsmanship of Djere they replayed. That double bounce was very hard to see, I can understand the call, but it's really frustrating for the players that they lose the point like this. But that MP was absolutely robbed fron Munar. The rule clearly says, that you cannot touch the net woth your body or racquet until the point is finished. And it was NOT, it was before the second bounce on Munar's side
The double bounce was also very clear. It is simple science. As Munar (and Federer in a similar event) explained: ball got spin, which is impossible on a single bounce. Referees should be taught this kind of math so they 're not only dependent on their eyes at the moment of touch but if they're in doubt, simply follow the ball's trajectory.
The worst thing about "drama" in tennis is that 90% of the time players are actually in the right, but they get labeled as bad people just because of the inadequacy of umpires
Around 70% pf them are wrong or at least they manage the situation rather bad

@@mikezittritsch3888 The racket touched the net before the second bounce -- point should've gone to Munar. Point is over when the ball bounces twice and you are not allowed to touch the net (with your body or racket) while the ball is in play.

@@mikezittritsch3888watch the match Rafa vs Nole Roland Garros 2013, 5th set, when Djokovic hits a clear winner which Nadal absolutely couldn’t reach but lost his balance and touched the net, point gone to Nadal without any doubt because this is how the rule works. U can’t touch the net before ball is dead(double bounce).
Stan complaining about a bottle leaking or whatever and having a whole baby about it is prime example of how spoiled and entitled a lot of tennis players are. Which makes sense because when it comes to their team it's all about them and they get used to that kind of treatment, but it's quite distasteful to see.

seeing a lot of people that doesn't play high level tennis in the comments. stan's drink wasn't "just water." it's an electrolyte mix. professional athletes get them from their trainers/physios after getting results from their sweat tests/panels. the physios are able to give them a specific amount of glucose and electrolytes specific to their needs of how much they lose in their sweat. some top players take it a step further in which they have specific drinks at certain junctures of a match. which is why you would see some of them with up to 4-6 bottles of different colored drinks.

I have read through all the comments about the rule that Munar was arguing for on his match point but it is crazy that you can see something like 19:04 and say that Wu deserved to lose that point. The double bounce absolutely, but this? The racket lightly touched the net after leaving his hand well after making a play. If you want to hardline that go ahead but it feels like enforcing a rule like that sucks all the joy out of a really impressive shot. The Djokovic and Nadal situation could have the same said, though I would argue that is still pretty different what actually happened on the play.

The umpire was really bad with the two decisions against Munar, tight calls like the first one, she may give the benefit of doubt to Wu (who should have admitted it was double bounce). Umpires need training on how the ball would spin if it was a second bounce vs first bounce…
The second error was so blatant…it’s a slow court, it’s clear the racket touched the net before second bounce. On top of that she erred and said it touched the net after the first bounce. Both cases we need replays when umpires pretend to be decisive on decisive points 17:46

Stan made this into a way bigger deal than it should have been, in a fair world he would have been made to lick the liquid off the floor for behaving like a brat. Many of these players are delusional
On January 24, Gulbis refused to continue the qualifying match and on the same day won the first round match as a lucky loser, and the second round match on January 26 in this video
