Jews have lived in China for thousands of years, the original Jewish community has survived the strongest in Kaifeng ,China. Most of the original Jewish community of China lost their identity via assimilation.Recently some Kaifeng Chinese Jews have immigrated to Israel.
I think the King means well but his presentation is full of generalities and stereotypes and common knowledge about both groups. He's making his audience feel good about itself. Lots of facts and figures. But nothing we didn't know before. If he made is audience uncomfortable then maybe we learned something new.

Quite a few Chinese ethnic groups have gotten into this habit of fashioning themselves the Chinese Jews. It is of course a backhanded compliment. The Hakkas like to invoke this story that because they were originally nomads from the north of China, everywhere they went through the centuries as they migrated south, local Chinese ethnic groups would be hesitant to accept them, hence according them the same regard as Jewish people were supposedly regarded in various parts of the west. This, of course, runs the risk of offending some Jewish people with a stereotype whilst being a bit self-indulgent on the part of the Hakkas (or, in this case, the speaker). Whatever the case, live and let live, and yes, there is a lot of similarities between the Jews and the Chinese, in good ways.
I'm Chinese and I don't see any similarity both the jewish and Chinese culture. But we love Jewish people.

I think one of the things that Dr. King misses is that, despite surface similarities, Chinese and Jewish culture differ on one major thing. Jewish culture seems to favor debate and critical thinking, while Chinese culture values consensus and face-saving, allowing disputes to either disappear or be quietly resolved behind the scenes. When it comes to how both cultures master systems of thought, the Chinese approach is to imitate it diligently and eventually make subtle refinements, whereas the Jewish approach seems to be to break it down to its essentials and rebuild it from scratch.
Debate and critical thinking only work within small groups, i.e. within Chinese elites behind closed doors or for small populations like the Jews. A billion people debating each other and free thinking equals paralysis. In terms of systems of thought, I agree. China ought to encourage first principles thinking in selected domains.
I think one thing that was not proper to mention in such an event is the fact that Jews and Chinese both suffered horrible discrimination in western societies.

Of course you could learn to be an individual and organize the world around individuals.... or keep fighting. We evolved within the real world and survived; our nature is fundamental. Learn to think fundamentally. If you want to stop racism never speak of it again and teach everyone to do the same. Its a consciousness thing.

@sheng liu The Chinese in the West don't tend to recommend other Chinese into positions of power. They tend to see it as competition for themselves. So it is difficult to form strong groups of powerful people that would otherwise be able to earn even more and to gain political power. (At the very top political power goes hand in hand with generating even more wealth, where the permission to do something or get around something may be all that is needed.)
Many Jews however can see the bigger picture. There are many in politics and there are private firms where any one not Jewish can not gain any control of that organization.

At 11:49, the percentage of Chinese in Singapore is listed as 54% constituting 90% of the billionaire in Singapore (according to the graph) , but I think about 75% of Singapore's population is ethnic Chinese, not 54% (about 21% percentage point short)

@@MrParlam although I do want to take the credit dor ourselves, I must insist Singapore's success largely owes to Lee Kuang Yew, the formal minister. He was a great leader, he made the Singaporean from different ethnic backgrounds unit, to recognize themselves as Singaporean. Very impressive work.

Not, dr King is right about the number. I'm Indonesian and i know Chinese-Indonesian actually more than 7 million in Indonesia. Many of them are assimilated and sometimes no longer to identified themselves as a Chinese. But despite they don't identified themselves as a Chinese anymore, they are still a Chinese.

The Chinese & Jews are old, proud & great civilizations, Chinese & Jewish have a long friendship since ancient times. respect for family, respect for education, great business people & entrepreneurs & long suffered prejudice & racism.
Absolute propaganda... It started some decades ago to make the jewish culture accepted in China; 30 years ago you never heard of jews in china, but today it is considered "hip" for Chinese to be associated with jews, this is reflected in many aspects of chinese culture, art, food, finances, etc... They are creating the notion that jews and chinese go way way back and that the relationship between them comes from a place of harmony and "supposed" harships, you know, they are pandering to the proud side of Chinese culture. The transfer of technology to China comes from Israel, the financial support of the Chinese economy comes from many banks around the world. China did not do this on their own, they were primed for it, but defenetly chosen to be the next empire... The US has served its purpose, that is why we are being used now only as an attack dog. You find it hard to believe, that's ok, it will become more obvious as time passes.

Was there any real economic reason for the US to prohibit chinese entry in the 1800's such as a labour surplus , further import would have only caused USA wages to fall further , it need not have been racial , since there was already a lot of african and hispanic migrants , not to mention those from Europe , I come from South Africa ,to where lots of cantonese speakers migrated for the gold boom , early 1900's but later many left , then in the 1960's many came from Hong Kong , and Taiwan, , but in the 1990's many left for UK, USA, or China, and to day the chinese are from Beijing engaged in selling imported goods . Pretty much. There's plenty of parallels between the two. Shanghai is the biggest city in China, bigger than even Beijing. Paris... Thinks the whole country revolves around them. Shanghainese tend to look down on the rest of the country as country bumpkins, including Beijingers, due to being the biggest city in China. Paris.... Is the biggest city in France and it's the capital and if people only know one city in France, it tends to be Paris, so pretty much triple bragging rights.
Paris is the origin of standard French, so pretty much think their French is superior to the French of all the rest of France. Especially the South of France. Shanghainese... Tend to think that they are above speaking Mandarin and prefer to just speak really fast incomprehensible Shanghainese.
I mean, being the most populous city of the most populous country on earth at the moment does certain things to your worldview. Especially since Shanghai used to host the international centre where 8 different countries had delegations there, post Boxer Revolution, which was meant as a punitive measure, but ironically made that city the most international on earth with people from China, the USA, the UK and their Commonwealth Empire, from the Austria-Hungarian Empire, from Germany, from Japan, from Italy, from two other Continental great powers I've forgotten off the top of my head, kinda lived in proximity to each other, each in their own enclave. I mean, honestly, if there was a time or place to go back to, that's where I would want to go. It'll be awesome. Imagine being a curious Chinese child with enough connections to get free access into each and every enclave: it'll be a goldmine for learning new languages and about the world and the different worldviews. It'll produce natural diplomats. Such a pity the Qing Dynasty regime failed to capitalise on that opportunity to train her own citizens in becoming the most advanced on earth, held back by nationalistic pride. Such a lost golden opportunity!

How to assimilate? You become part of the community. You know, be friendly, kind, trustworthy; the simple stuff. All trees are known by their fruits.... build or grow a reputation that is honorable....you become valuable to the community. You are assimilated.

The Jewish immigrants to the USA during the peak between about 1880 to 1920 were highly represented in starting small businesses in laundries and restaurants and food stalls. It is highly unlikely that Chaplin was Jewish. Although if by some chance his Mother's Mother or Grandmother etc were possibly Jewish then Chaplin would be considered Jewish.

What a Canadian Psychologist Knows about Israel that Israelis Do Not
Jordan Peterson, a Canadian media personality, clinical psychologist, author, and professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, describes himself as a “classic British liberal.” The media often describes him as conservative. Be that as it may, his words to a 3,000 strong audience at the International Convention Center in Jerusalem should not fall on deaf Israeli ears because when he says emphatically, “You have a tremendous moral responsibility,” and “Show the world what the holy city could look like - because we need it,” we should understand that he speaks for billions and the onus really is on us.
A couple of weeks ago, at an event hosted by The Daily Wire in Jerusalem, Peterson said, “Everyone looks here to see how you are doing under this tremendous assault of adversarial criticism - as this little tiny people in the middle of no-man’s land - as a cardinal model of the nation state and the city on the hill. You have a tremendous moral responsibility like you have perhaps had for your entire history for reasons that are very difficult to understand.”
The problem is that what non-Jews feel about Israel and Israelis, we refuse to admit because while they can simply express how they feel, we have to respond to those emotions. It is a heavy burden to be responsible for the world’s problems. It is perfectly understandable that we refuse to admit it and strive to either deny it or assimilate among the nations. But the nations will clearly not allow us to do either.
We have been decrying our fate for centuries; we have written books about it, and we even titled one of them Israel, the Ever-dying People. However, when it comes to doing what we must, to making ourselves “a shining light on a hill,” as Peterson put it, we turn our backs on our mission and blame each other for the hatred turned against us.
The obligation we avoid is our obligation to each other, to unite “as one man with one heart” and become the “cardinal model” that Peterson and the rest of the world want to see. They do not need our high-tech industry or our sophisticated weapons. They need our unique, authentic moral system, the one that was established on the basis of love of others. Only if we establish our society in Israel based on this value, we will win the world’s approval.
The world is aching for it. Some of the people will ask this from us nicely, the way Peterson articulated it. Others will demand it through violence. Either way, we will know no peace or peace of mind until we provide the world the example of unity and solidarity that we must.

Education is important but quality education is better. The author of this video is not an American born Shanghainese. He is an American of Shanghainese descent. He is not chinese because he doesn’t has chinese nationality. If there is a war between China and the USA, he will have to kill Chinese people because he was part of the US Navy. At around 16:00 you discuss "homeland". Jewish People distinctly have a Homeland, that is Aretz Yisroel - The Land of Israel. The current official nation called The State of Israel is the 5th Jewish kingdom in the same land. Also in the recent past there was a saying "lantsman" i.e. land-man that is someone who had been born in and had lived in a European nation before particularly coming to the USA. So 'lantsman' implied you were from the same land when you discover that is so. Just as there are DRASTIC regional differences in China, as you point out your background is Shanghai, Jewish people are 'lantsmen' from one nation or another but ALL have a Homeland which is Israel. The percentage of economies in Southeast Asia that are dominated by Chinese are from 2 provinces in China; Guangdong & Fujian. The Cantonese, Hakka and Teochew came from Guangdong province, whereas the Hokkien came from Fujian province. The Top 3 highest IQ, is usually always Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. Again they are from Guangdong and Fujian province. How can you discredit these 2 provinces and give it all to Ningbo (Zhejiang province) and claim that shanghainese are the Jews of China. There are 3 main groups in Shanghai; Cantonese (Elite and Commerce class), Ningbo/Shaoxing (middle class) and Jiangbei (lower/working class). If you look at Chinese articles you can find this. The famous Shanghai 四大公司 during the 民國 period were all Cantonese.

We are the descendants of Judea tribe and ”Palestine” is a name the Roman colonizers give to our homeland Judea after kicking us out 1900 year's ago to disconnect it from us. This is our one and only ancestral historical land.

Actually, I didn't feel that from him at all. He put a positive connotation on both generalizations (wealth accumulation and stinginess), emphasized the similarities of both cultures, and even recommended that other overseas diasporas emulate the qualities of the cultures he described. (e.g. do not underestimate the value of accumulation of wealth and frugality/stinginess)
Btw, you used the phrase "stinginess", he used the phrase "cheap" and the phrase "frugal". Language is complicated, but in general I think you don't feel comfortable because we associate certain words with positivity or negativity. That association is made on a personal level based on our past experiences of the usage of the word. But in the end it is only a word, if you change your association of the word, then you will feel less uncomfortable.
Something he could have done better is the overall presentation and perhaps choice of language he used. He is a pretty old guy, overall I think it was a passable talk.

There was not any antisemetic implications here at all. Actually, quite the opposite. Also the word "stingy" wasn't used. Both Chinese and Jews are giving people. It is my impression that Roger was referring to frugality which refers to value for money.
The word you're looking for is Orientalism/Orientalised. It's the Othering and subordination of differences. What he's doing is Self-Orientalism, it can be positive or negative, this is the positive Othering of Chinese and Jews.

I dont know what's happening in other countries, but when Dr King says the chinese are being discriminated against in Malaysia, I have to respectfully disagree. Probably Dr King has been coincidently getting views from only a handful of Malaysian chinese having similar perception of being discriminated against. Why not also try to get the views of the indigenous Malays too in your study so that you get to get the historical aspect in the whole scheme of things that make up Malaysia today.
