Because Sri Lanka is collectively and strategically the most important country for India, the distance between Sri Lanka and India is 53 kilometers. While the distance of India's own island group Andaman and Nicobar is 1914 km. This means that Sri Lanka is much closer to India than Andaman and Nicobar. Still Sri Lanka is not a part of India. The reason for this is believed by many that at the time of India's independence in 1947, Sri Lanka was not allowed to join India.
